‘Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Is Getting A Sequel

It got $200 million world wide, which really doesn’t sound like that much, but studio execs at Paramount, never ones to take “really doesn’t sound like that much” for an answer, have greenlit a sequel to 2012′s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. It may or may not be a sound business decision, but it clearly was not a decision based on the artistic merits of the film, which was met with apathy and scorn by audiences and critics.

It’s not easy to think that Jeremy Renner or Gemma Arterton will be returning, unless they’re paid a metric ton of money, which the film probably can’t afford to pay them, so expect a low budget and no names, a la all 700 of the Resident Evil sequels.

In more interesting news, Hansel and Gretel director Tommy Wirkola is off shooting a sequel to Dead Snow in Norway.

There. That’s better.

The hottest film of March 2012, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, finally has a trailer. But don’t hold it against it.

The tongue-in-cheek fairy-tale action film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, has been pushed back to come on the heels of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’s flop at the box office (even though it’s awesome), which I can’t imagine will help this film’s chances. Then again, it has Jeremy Renner in it playing with Van Helsing’s guns, Gemma Arterton in a leather catsuit, and witches getting their heads chopped off. If you expect more than that from a film, brother, this is where we part ways.

Someone snuck some Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters pics on set in Germany. And if you like steam punk, a) You’ll love these outfits and b) What the hell’s wrong with you? Stop liking steampunk!

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Atherton are rocking some leather witch-huntin’ garb all right, looking almost like they wandered off the set of a Matrix sequel for a smok break.

Gemma Atherton looks hotly approachable while the ghost of Rutherford B. Hayes haunts her right shoulder.

Mr. Renner sees your clandestine attempt to photograph him and does NOT find it amusing.

Peter Stormare Inevitably Cast In ‘Hansel & Gretel’

It was only a matter of time before Peter Stormare‘s agent got the call. The instantly recognizable character actor has proven himself in comedies like The Big Lebowski and the Frogger episode of “Seinfeld,” while also turning up in gritty fairy tale updates like Th Brothers Grimm.

In Tommy Wirkola‘s Hansel & Gretel, Stormare will play Berringer, a crooked town sheriff. Which means he’ll likely end up being double-crossed by the witches. It always goes that way for those guys.

All in all, the cast is rounding out nicely. The only X factor here is Jeremy Renner‘s comedic chops. The only comedy on his resume in National Lampoon’s Senior Trip and the fact that you’re saying to yourself, “There was a National Lampoon’s Senior Trip,” speaks to the yuckfest that film turned out to be. Famke Janssen Joins The Witch Hunt

We haven’t seen too much her since she let her daughter chase U2 around Europe and subsequently get sold into sex-slavery in Taken, but that is about to change. Famke Janssen has joined the cast of Tommy Wirkola‘s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters as the leader of the witches.

The film follows Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner as adult-versions of Hansel and Gretel. With their gingerbread house nightmare behind them, they’ve now dedicated their lives to the hunting down and destruction of witches.

This casting works for me. I could watch Famke all day long. And I still would be if that judge hadn’t stepped in with his stupid robe and gavel and blah, blah, court-ordered something or other. (Playlist)

Gemma Arterton Has Taste For Witch Blood

Brunette British bombshell Gemma Arterton is locked and loaded to play Gretel in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. She’ll be tag-teaming with Jeremy Renner, who’s already on board to play her brother. The dark action movie picks up with the fairy tale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters.

Arterton beat out Diane Kruger, Eva Green, and Noomi Rapace, who were all gunning for the role. Shooting will ideally begin March 7 in Berlin, if Renner can manage the schedule. He’s much in demand now after convincingly disarming IEDs in The Hurt Locker and dropping his R’s in The Town. Next up are The Avengers and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, then he’ll avoid stepping into ovens with Arterton. (THR)

Jeremy Renner recently spoke to Norwegian site Dagsavisen in loud, deliberate speech patterns to explain that he might work for breadcrumbs in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. He also stated that original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace, may play his sister and fellow witch hunter for director Tommy Wirkola and producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

There’s no official press release yet, so don’t consider this a lock. It’s about time Renner returned to comedy. He showed such promise in National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. (Twitch)
