Guy Ritchie, who has recently found commercial success with his Sherlock Holmes films, is now being asked by Warner Bros. to kick off a King Arthur universe of films that includes not one, not two, not three, not FIVE, not six..wait. Yeah. Six installments.

Do we need six King Arthur films? No. But do we WANT six King Arthur installments? Also no. But it would appear we’re getting them, and while Ritchie hasn’t been formally announced as the director of six films (the studio has to draw the line somewhere), it’s thought that the series is his to lose.

So now The Avengers has some competition! From the Spider-Man universe, Batman vs. Superman BS, and the Fantastic Four. And King Arthur. And probably Ant-Man or something as well.

Exciting times for people who hate original films.

Having sufficiently mined the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to re-assert cultural relevance, Guy Ritchie is apparently lunging forward a few decades from that era to that of the construction of the Empire State Building with Empire Rises. Ritchie is on board to produce, and possibly direct, Thomas Kelly’s novel about politicians, the IRA, and probably sympathetic steel beams and Native Americans with awesome senses of balance.

One can only assume, in this age of CGI, that the building won’t be reconstructed either at full-scale or as a miniature but will probably be depicted using motion capture, with Andy Serkis wearing a skyscraper-shaped framework of ping pong balls and green spandex. Unfortunately, Serkis will probably still miss out on an Academy Award nomination, not because the Academy refuses to recognize motion capture work as “acting,” but rather because everyone agreed that Daniel Day-Lewis‘ depiction of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater was far more convincing and earnest.

Hot potato! Tom Cruise is the latest A-lister to circle the long in the works adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Based on the 1960′s spy action series, U.N.C.L.E. follows American agent Napoleon Solo and Soviet agent Illya Kuryakin during the Cold War. Many feel that this casting will not take given the history of this project. Then again, Tom Cruise loves playing a spy. He’s got like nine spy movies under his belt at this point.

Previously, Steven Soderbergh was attached to direct but when he couldn’t get George Clooney to sign on, the project went into a tailspin. The studio considered Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, Joel Kinnaman, Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender but those castings did not come to fruition. Guy Ritchie is currently in the director’s chair but hasn’t had much luck casting this sumbitch either after offers to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were turned down. If Cruise decides to pass, Ritchie will also walk. Why they don’t just offer it to Liam Neeson, I do not know. He’ll star in anything.

Not to tell studios how to do their job or anything, but I think they’d have a lot more luck finding their lead if the character wasn’t named Napoleon Solo. Sounds porny. (THR)

I miss the old Guy Ritchie. The one that made our noses bleed with double-crossing ensemble films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and RocknRolla. The end of RocknRolla promised us a sequel, but it looks like we’l be waiting a minute as he burns though Treasure Island and probably the odd Sherlock Holmes sequel in the interim.

Warner Bros. likes the magic he spun with the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle series, so now they’ve signed him up to do more of the same (presumably) with Robert Louis Stevenson’s tropical saga. Maybe after that he’ll get back to those uniquely told caper films?

Eh. Not so fast.

His name has also been bandied about in conjunction with a Cannonball Run remake, which sounds slightly better than Treasure Island, but still not as good as anything he did before that, not counting Swept Away, which shouldn’t be counted towards anything.

Now that Steven Soderbergh has soderberghed his way out of directing Warner BrosMan from U.N.C.L.E. adaptation, it is free to court other suitors. Though it’s not always healthy to bounce from relationship to relationship (ask Thor 2), Warner’s Man from U.N.C.L.E. is now getting involved with director Guy Ritchie and Sherlock Holmes producer Lionel Wigram. And you know what? They’re really cute together.

It’s just talks right now, but I could see them totally going steady. It’s really just a matter if Ritchie and Wigram are willing to up route their lives and move to the 1960′s for the adaptation. (THR)

The first trailer for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is up, and I really don’t think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had this many karate chops in mind when he was developing the character.

Like the original entry, this installment appears to be an action film that just happens to have some famous literary characters in it. Like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but much less awful. However, it’s not all cookie-cutter, as it appears the role of “Rachel McAdams” will be played by her understudy, Noomi Rapace, who is on loan from the David Fincher collection.

Once you get past the explosions, the cross-dressing, and Watson’s visible contempt for his employer…there really isn’t a whole lot left. So I hope you like explosions and smug RDJ!

Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming sequel to Sherlock Holmes, subtitled A Game of Shadows is coming out in December of this year. And in order to promote this event, Warner Bros. has released a couple of posters, each featuring a close-up of one of the two main characters, which you can see below. One features Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock himself, and the other has Jude Law as his dependable sidekick Watson. Jared Harris as archvillain Moriarty and Noomi Rapace as “Slim” can also be seen in the background.

These posters are pretty cool, if conventional. And, surprise, they’re very reminiscent of the posters for the first Sherlock Holmes movie. As Sherlock once said to Watson: “My dear Watson, if it isn’t broken, then why endeavor upon fixing it?” (Yahoo!)

UPDATE: Warner Bros. has told The Playlist that Guy Ritchie is not directing the 300 sequel, Xerxes. Neither is Zack Snyder, as he’s too busy figuring out Superman. James Franco has also not thrown his hat in the ring yet, but I expect it won’t be long.

This is madness. This is Warner Bros.

After director Zack Snyder‘s run of box office disappointments about owls – the funny to say Owls of Ga’Hoole and Watchmen, which featured that crazy/awkward Owlship sex scene - it seems like Warner Bros. may not be so keen on Mr. Snyder. There are rumors that his Superman: Man Of Steel script has major third act problems and recent test audiences feel like they got sucker punched after watching Sucker Punch. Mr. Snyder must be suffering from a major hoot-ache right now. (I was going for an owl/”headache” joke, not an owl/”footache” joke, but only time will tell how that pun gets interpreted.)

A sign that things have gone south between the WB and Snyder? They’ve offered director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) the sequel to Snyder’s box office smash 300. Called Xerxes, all we know for now is that it’s called Xerxes and will likely center around that Prussian king… y’know, What’s-his-name… Baldy McChainface. The real insult is that the story for the sequel – also based on a Frank Miller graphic novel – was developed for the screen by Snyder, with intentions to direct it himself.

Ho boy. Looks like Warner execs just kicked Snyder into the pit on this one. (Vulture)

Today they’ve released the official title: Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows. I don’t believe they added a frightened stoner and Great Dane to the story, either.

How do we feel about this title? Did you need a colon added to pique your interest, or are you even less intrigued now? I do wonder about this game involving shadows though. What are the rules? How many players are allowed? And most importantly, can alcohol be integrated into it? (/Film)

Keeping in the spirit of remaking everything just because, there’s a rumor going around that Guy Ritchie is eager to remake Cannonball Run. I take this news with enough salt to deice Sundance.

If this story is to be believed (don’t believe it), Ritchie wants George Clooney to play the role Burt Reynolds played in the original films. I’d be interested to see Ritchie’s take on the concept of an illegal cross-country race (always felt the original needed more bloodshed), but I really can’t believe this is true. First off, Ritchie is busy with Sherlock Holmes 2, Clooney has a thousand projects in the works, and Larry the Cable Guy would have to dig way too deep to pull off Captain Chaos.

So mark me down as the skeptic. We have a better chance at getting an apology from Kurt Sutter than we do at ever seeing Ritchie remake Cannonball Run. (Badass Digest)

Sherlock Holmes 2 is the sequel to Ritchie’s 2009 adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary classic, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law as his right hand man Watson. The first film was fun enough, and boasted some nice set pieces and some of the trademark directorial flair we’ve come to expect from Guy Ritchie.
