Claire Coffee is a modern-day witch on NBC’s”Grimm.” Modern, of course, means she’s also an attorney/strong, independent woman. She just happens to be able to morph her face into a hideous mask of terror and use magic. Coffee previously appeared on TNT‘s “Franklin and Bash,” also in an attorney role.

Fall TV Tips: Fairy Tale Dramas

We’ve covered guys sitcoms and girls sitcoms, now let’s take a glance at something different. And for TV, this is something quite different. The TV powers must be looking to cash in on the recent wave of fairy tale-related material in production for the big screen, because they have scheduled two such shows to air this fall.

Both shows mix fairy tale shenanigans into a contemporary setting and the result is a world in which every nerd wants to live.

WATCH IT:

Once Upon a Time (ABC), Premieres Sunday, 10/23 at 8 pm (ET)

This show gets the nod for a few reasons. 1) The preview is better 2) Ginnifer Goodwin is in it and we’ve seen her naked on Big Love 3) Jennifer Morrison is the lead and is kinda’ hot; 4) Some of the writers from Lost are behind the show.

The story is about a woman who comes to the small town of Storybrooke and soon finds out that fairy tales and all their magic are actually happening for real and she has a connection to all of it. Seems a little dorky, but the preview promises enough geek thrills — like a horse drawn carriage racing through a creepy forrest — to beg for a watch or two. And who knows, it might shape up to be a guilty pleasure you can record and watch when your girlfriend is at work. Don’t laugh, I’ve done that sort of thing more than once.

SKIP IT:

Grimm (NBC), Premieres Friday, 10/21 at 9 pm (ET)

Grimm debuts two days before Once Upon a Time, but it’s a Friday show and you all know what I think about Friday primetime shows (hint: they suck). The preview is dark and ominous but lacks name actors like its competitor — I forgot to mention that the uber-cool Robert Carlyle is also in Once Upon a Time — and also has a weaker premise. Yes. A weaker fairy tale premise than the other show about fairy tales.

This one’s about a detective that begins to have visions and discovers that he’s one of the last Grimms of the famou Grimm family. All the visions turn out to be true, like the man that morphs into a wolf and goes after the female jogger in the woods that happens to be wearing a red jacket with a hood. Subtle stuff like that. This show will probably do okay with the Buffy crowd because they share the same executive producers and have a similar feel. But I say if you only have time for one fairy tale show this year, this shouldn’t be the one to make time for. Trust me. I’m a friend.

You’ve got to hand it to NBC. In the face of overwhelming adversity and ubiquitous ridicule, they keep plugging along. Picking up new shows, renewing and cancelling old ones…it’s almost as if they don’t realize the hardships they’re facing on a day-to-day basis. Up above you’ll see a clip from “Up All Night,” starring Will Arnett and Christina Applegate, with more clips from more new shows down below, including “Whitney,” starring comedian Whitney Cummings, “Free Agents,” starring Hank Azaria, “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” starring Laura Prepon on a Chelsea Handler-like character (!), and more. Won’t you watch them? If not for me, then for NBC. Then, after that, you’ve got your dramas.

Now that you’ve gotten comedy, the lowest form of entertainment, out of the way – it’s time for the dramas. Below we have clips for shows like “Prime Suspect,” “The Playboy Club,” the Inception-inspired “Awake,” and more.

There you have it! If you start them now, you might be able to finish before Monday morning.

Yesterday, NBC picked up a bunch of girlie shows for girlie girls. Today it’s all about odd dramas, or “oddmas” as I call them. I’m sure that term’s gonna catch on.

“The Playboy Club” will put on rabbit ears and pretend-flirt with you. Chad Hodge’s series stars Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard, and will explore the sexy world of 1960s Playboy bunnies. Va-va-voom or va-va-blatant”Mad Men“-rip-off? We’ll soon find out.

Is the Big Bag Wolf bad enough to mess with the police? “Grimm” is a cop drama that takes place in a world where fairy tale characters are real. This sounds an awful lot like the graphic novel series Fables, so if you like that premise, definitely read Fables, so you can complain about how much better Fables is.

Finally, I’ve been lying awake at night for years wondering when somebody would make a police procedural with a “Sliders” twist. Now it’s happening and I can finally sleep. “Awake” stars Jason Isaacs as a detective who has an accident, causing his life to split into two realities: one where his wife dies and his son lives, and the other where his wife lives but his son dies. He should just hop to the universe where the sky rains donuts. “Awake” is showrunner Wonder Woman” series was not picked up. David E. Kelley‘s invisible jet has been shot down. Hopefully, this will leave Adrianne Palicki free to wear sexier, less-outrage provoking outfits in the future. (EW)

NBC Combines Hackneyed Fairy Tales and Hackneyed Cop Shows

Finally, a TV show about police officers. NBC, you never stop pushing the envelope. Except this time, they did a little. While there’s nothing progressive, or even interesting, about cop shows, NBC did manage to pick up an inspired show in”Grimm,” a pilot in which the cops interact with characters inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Because most childless adults have blurred the distinction between the Brothers Grimm, Aesop, and Mother Goose, here’s an inexhaustive rundown of who these cops could be dealing with if and when this show gets picked up.

Sleeping Beauty
Hansel and Gretel
Cinderella
Little Red Riding Hood
Snow White
Rapunzel
And about 200 more

The team behind the development show is a mixed bag, with Sean Hayes from “Will & Grace” executive producing a script from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” vets David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf.

Will this concept hold up? It sounds promising, but will require a deft hand as having cops step into trite children’s tales week after week doesn’t sound like appointment television. However, the premise opens itself up to celeb cameos left and right. Michael Cera would make a great Hansel, but I would respectfully request that the producers kill him off by the end of the episode. (Deadline)
