In tackling the third* and final issue of what it REALLY means to be a teenager, Glee will stage a shooting in the halls of its weird, weird school. If this angers you for no particular reason, you are not alone.

It will be interesting to see how they tie this tragedy into an a capella rendering of “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry, but if anyone can do it deftly, it’s the master of subtlety, Ryan Murphy.

Just kidding. I’m guessing even Ryan Murphy doesn’t watch Glee anymore. In any event. Tomorrow night, if you’re feeling particularly mad at yourself, make yourself an individual serving of microwave popcorn, force your cat upon your lap, and watch this bullshit.

Glee, Thursdays at 9 on FOX.

Granted, Glee is one of the more annoying shows on television, but that doesn’t mean we can’t show some appreciation for Dianna Agron. The 25-year-old actress has been on the show since day one, and makes the whole production slightly more bearable for any non musical fans who happen to tune in by accident. Agron also appeared in sci-fi flick I Am Number Four last year.

Tonight, NBC airs a holiday themed episode of Community that also acts as a Glee parody. So what? Sounds about par for the course, right? WRONG! What’s different about tonight’s episode is the fact that it’s the last installment before the show goes on hiatus! No, it hasn’t been officially canceled, and the network could bring it back later this season, but we here at Screen Junkies like to prepare for the worst. That’s why we’ve stocked an entire bunker full of canned foods and K-Y Jelly. It’s also why we’re preparing ourselves for the fact that Community may not be coming back.

With that in mind, we decided to pay tribute to one of our favorite characters, Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi), the only way we know how: by hastily compiling a gallery of animated Gifs. Enjoy.

So apparently Glee is paying tribute to Michael Jackson. We couldn’t be more excited. You see, we’re big fans of Glee around these parts. We just can’t get enough of that feel-good musical dramedy with all the highs and lows of real life encapsulated into a single hour.

Is the snark being laid on heavy enough here, or are we leaving room for ambiguity? Please let us know so we can get it right next time. Anyway, Glee is doing a tribute to late pop singer and noted child enthusiast Michael Jackson. Here’s our own list of people we hope get the Glee tribute treatment soon.

Slayer

Slayer pretty much invented music, so we’re a little confused about why Glee has’t paid tribute to the masters of thrash yet. We’re thinking they should do an extra-special, two-hour episode of Glee where the gang sings the entirety of Seasons in the Abyss and South Of Heaven. Maybe they can mix it up and throw in some At The Gates and Cannibal Corpse tunes while they’re at it? We’re just making a suggestion here. We’re not married to the idea.

NWA

NWA were, along with Slayer, the driving force behind the invention of modern music. Those of you not old enough to remember won’t recall the days when every song in existence was recorded by Pat Boone fronting the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. NWA changed all that. Fronted by a dwarf from Compton, NWA featured Ice Cube back when he was into jheri curls, the LA Raiders and saying “f*ck the police.” You younger readers now know Ice Cube as the conductor at Shining Time Station and the star of a host of Disney movies. We think the Glee gang can do a great version of “I Ain’t The One” and “She Swallowed It.”

After its October 5th premiere, the macabre American Horror Story has put up some decent numbers, tracking to be FX‘s highest-rated first season in history, so it should come as no surprise that the network picked it up for a second season yesterday. The pickup is for the cable-standard 13 episodes, and while it’s not known when the series will begin its sophomore effort, the smart money would be next fall. Say, around Halloweenish?

For those not hip to the show, Horror Story follows the Harmon family as they move from Boston to LA, dealing with their marital problems, all the while having to negotiate their new house, which, of course, is haunted. It stars Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Frances Conroy, and Jessica Lange.

Ever since the show’s teaser campaign, the project has served as a sort of mystery to be solved, which evidently hasn’t scared away casual viewers who stumbled upon the show looking for sexy vampires or dudes killing zombies.

Why Did The Emmys Snub ‘Community’? Ask ‘Modern Family’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/why-did-the-emmys-snub-community-ask-modern-family/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/why-did-the-emmys-snub-community-ask-modern-family/#comments Thu, 14 Jul 2011 20:40:30 +0000 Jame Gumb http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=220301 With Modern Family getting so much love, there was no room for one of the best shows on television.

The post Why Did The Emmys Snub ‘Community’? Ask ‘Modern Family’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
To paraphrase Doug Benson, every year I watch the Emmy nominations, and every year I’m outraged that an old gay man’s opinion doesn’t match my own. This year was no exception. And while many deserving shows were snubbed, the complete absence of Community was by far the most insulting omission.

So, what is to blame for Community’s complete lack of nominations? In my opinion, it’s a bizarre fixation with the show Modern Family on the part of the nominators.

To be fair, given the nature of the Emmys, there will always be shows that are left out. After all, there are only so many spots to fill. If every deserving program was nominated, the nominations themselves would be meaningless. Take the Oscars. Being nominated for Best Picture used to mean something. But for the past few years, the Academy expanded the nominations to include 10 films, and the entire process become a joke, the punch line being that at least half of the nominees have absolutely no shot at winning. But with the Emmys, the old cliché stands, and it is still an honor to be nominated. That’s what makes Community’s absence so glaring.

How does such an innovative, ground breaking show get snubbed on so many different levels? More importantly, how is it that not one member of its talented ensemble cast received a nomination in the supporting actor category? Well, of the 12 available supporting actor nominations (six male, and six female), two went to cast members of Glee, and six went to the cast of Modern Family. When two-thirds of the available nominations are monopolized by two shows, with half going to one show in particular, there’s a problem. Throw in a few ridiculous pity nominations for Jon Cryer (he had to deal with Charlie Sheen) and Betty White (ha, the old lady made a sex joke), and you’re left with only two available spots for all the other shows on television, both of which can only be given to women. Given these circumstances, it’s easy to see how Community was left out.

Modern Family isn’t a bad show. In fact, it’s a great show, and it has a very strong cast. But the idea that almost every adult member of that cast should be up for an Emmy is ludicrous. Yes, it’s hard to pick and choose, but that’s the whole point of an award show. Does Sofia Vergara’s exaggerated broken-English really warrant a nomination over the performances of Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, and Yvette Nicole Brown? Does Eric Stonestreet’s over-the-top portrayal of a gay character really deserve a spot over Donald Glover and Danny Pudi, both of whom play hilarious characters that manage to defy traditional stereotypes? More importantly, do the people who nominate these shows actually watch anything other than Modern Family and Glee?

Of course, Community was overlooked in other categories as well. If ever there was a need for a laugh track, it was when Big Bang Theory was announced as a nominee for best comedy. And to be fair, there were some pleasant surprises. Louie C.K. is up for best actor. That in itself is a joke, but it’s nice to see such a talented guy getting the acknowledgment he deserves, even if it is in the wrong category. It was also nice to see that Martha Plimpton from Raising Hope and Amy Poehler from Parks & Recreation both ended up with noms, as did Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones. But with one of the best shows in recent memory sitting on the sidelines, even these deserving nominations rang hallow.

Again, I’m not bashing Modern Family or its cast, and I’m not even saying that Community is a better show (I happen to think it is, but we’re talking about nominations, so the point it irrelevant). Wha I am saying is that allowing one show to dominate the nomination process is a sure fire way to alienate a lot of talented, deserving artists. It’s also a surefire way to make the Emmys seem even more out of touch and irrelevant than they are.

Unsurprisingly, HBO has decided that Comic-Con is a pretty good forum to talk up its shows about knights and vampires, making the”True Blood” and “Game of Thrones” panels appointment television for thousands of the attendees. Also unsurprisingly, Fox has decided that Comic-Con was an appropriate venue for almost ALL of its scripted shows. “Bob’s Burgers” is going to find an audience or die trying.

Both networks were courteous enough to issue press releases containing the schedules and the info. I know two PR departments that are getting muffin baskets this Christmas…

Because it features more nudity and violence, we’ll start with HBO:

That’s it. That’s the news. If you’re a fan of the TV show Glee,” but you weren’t able to get tickets to any of the live shows, Glee Live! In Concert! will probably be on your radar when it comes out for a two-week limited engagement on August 12. If you’re like me and you’ve never even seen the show, maybe you want to just play video games out in the lobby of the theater. I’ll meet you there – I have lots of quarters.

Here’s “Glee“-creator Ryan Murphy on the announcment:

“This tour was all about going out and performing for our amazing fans who have supported our show from the beginning, but due to the limited time we had to travel during our hiatus, there were only so many cities we could get to before we had to resume work on the television series. We knew that not every fan who wanted to attend a concert would get that opportunity. Now, thanks to our friends at Twentieth Century Fox Film, we’ll be able to bring the concert experience to movie theaters across the country in full three dimensional glory. We promise every passionate ‘Gleek’ a cinematic experience that will have them singing and dancing in the aisles.”

Oh, and it’s going to be in 3D too, because why wouldn’t it be? Enjoy your “Glee” concert movie, America. You’ve earned it.

Someone made a joke on Twitter that many people are taking offense to. Everybody look surprised. I seriously hope a series of alarms go off at Twitter HQ when that happens.

Novelist Brett Easton Ellis, the satirical author behind American Psycho, wrote the following eyebrow-raising nugget into the Twittersphere:

“I like the idea of ‘Glee‘ but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I’ve stepped into a puddle of HIV?”

That’s some in-ter-es-ting word choice for a show that has an inordinate amount of gay characters. It’d be like calling “Seinfeld” a “puddle of Holocaust.” I assume Ellis will either apologize, or”Glee” creator Ryan Murphy will furiously respond and generate more Tweet drama. On a related note, I miss the days before Twitter when celebrities used to fight each other in person at the “Source Awards.” If nobody comes out of this with a black eye or chipped tooth, I’ll be so angry… I’ll have to sing about it? I’ve never seen an episode of Glee.” Don’t get me wrong. I’ve got nothing against it, other than the fact that even though I absolutely hate musicals and pop music, I’m constantly being told to “give it a chance.” But that’s hardly the show’s fault, so when it comes to “Glee,” I’m content to live and let live. Or so I thought.

While I can’t pretend to know much about the show I am more familiar with its creator, Ryan Murphy. He was also the creator of the plastic surgery drama, “Nip/Tuck,” and the director of Eat Pray Love, a film that, Allah willing, I will never have to sit through. But that’s not why I know him. I know Ryan Murphy because he’s been the star of two very public hissy fits.

One incident involved Slash, the former Guns N’ Roses guitarist. After Slash turned down “Glee’s” request to use some of the band’s music, Murphy equate the rocker to a washed-up has been, and called his intelligence into question. Granted, Slash went on record stating his dislike for “Glee,” saying the show was “worse than Grease and Grease is bad enough,” before adding, “Actually, I look at Grease now and think ‘between High School Musical and “Glee,” Grease was a brilliant work of art.” Given the circumstances, it’s easy to see why Murphy replied in a less than tactful manner.

But the second incident, involving the band Kings of Leon, was much more confusing. After the band refused to allow their song “Use Somebody” to appear on “Glee,” Murphy went on a tirade against the group in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“F— you, Kings of Leon. They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument.”

The self-importance is staggering. First of all, why the hell would a seven-year old be listening to Kings of Leon or watching “Glee?” Second, why is it the band’s job to inspire children to join a glee club or pick up an instrument? Third, why is “Glee” the only way to go about inspiring children toward music appreciation? And last but not least, who gives a shit if children appreciate music? Maybe I’m missing “the big picture,” but I couldn’t give a rats ass if some seven-year-old picks up an instrument or joins a glee club. I’d rather a show inspire them to get a god damn job and stay the hell off my lawn.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who had a real problem with Murphy’s pompous remarks (although I’m probably the least important). Today, Foo Fighters front man David Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins both criticized Murphy, with Hawkins going as far as to call him a “fucking jerk.” Grohl went on to say:

“It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do f—ing ‘Glee.’ And then the guy who created ‘Glee’ is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his f—ing show. … F— that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do ‘Glee.’ … I watched 10 minutes. It’s not my thing.”

So now I find myself rooting for a band I haven’t listened to in ten years as they crusade against a television show I’ve never even seen. And judging from the comment section on articles covering Grohl’s remarks, I’m far from alone. Why? Maybe the show is too over exposed. Maybe it’s because of the show’s overzealous fan base. Maybe it’s because of Murphy’s pompous attitude. Or maybe, deep down, a lot of people can’t stand teenagers and, or musicals. But whatever the reason, the “Glee” backlash has begun, and I’m happy about it.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has re-teamed with Brad Falchuk for a new FX pilot, “American Horror Show.” While this marks the second time the team is working with the network (“Nip/Tuck” being the first), this time around, they are being very tight-lipped about the subject matter. In fact, FX has refused to even release info on the show’s plot. As such, they have left us no choice but to come up with our own predictions about the show’s content. Here are nine possible plotlines.

 • A sexy look at the hard-partying life and times of H.P. Lovecraft.
 • A family of East Coast serial killers adapts to life in Midwest suburbia.
 • True-life tales from the guy who gets paid to drain Rosie O’Donnell’s many abscesses.
 • Two plastic surgeons lose their licenses and end up teaching music at a loca high school.
 • Rocky Horror Picture Show fans must come to terms with the fact that the film they love just isn’t that good.

Just like in any relationship, FX is crawling back to Ryan Murphy now that he’s with a better looking (higher profile) significant other (network). That metaphor makes significantly less sense than the announcement that Ryan Murphy and his “Nip/Tuck” co-EP Brad Falchuk have sold a pilot to FX. It all seems pretty standard, except that there’s no actual information about the pilot, titled “American Horror Story.” What’s it about? Singing plastic surgeon ghosts? We don’t know. Who’s starring in it? Singing kids in ghost wheelchairs? No idea! We know it’s a pilot, that it’ll be shooting in April, 20th Century Fox TV is producing, and that Murphy, Falchuk and Dante Di Loreto are executive producing. We also know that FX’s President and GM, John Landgraf, is really excited about it, although why wouldn’t he be? Murphy is a cash cow, and has found a way to both develop a new cable property and still have time to run his incredibly successful network show,”Glee,” at the same time. There is only one explanation for his unfaltering productivity: the man is a kitch robot, and if he becomes sentient, we are all doomed. (Deadline)

What does it take to send “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy into an expletive laced tirade? Deny him the right to turn a song of yours into a “number” on his hit show, that’s what. Apparently Murphy requested to use a Kings Of Leon song for his show last August, and the band turned it down. Well, KoL, I hope you were prepared for the WRATH OF MURPHY! Here’s the response he fired back at the band of good ol’ boys turned quasi-hipster in The Hollywood Reporter:

“Fuck you, Kings of Leon. They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

DAAAAAAMN! That’s one angry showrunner/musical theater buff! However, this feud appears to be pretty one sided, as Caleb Followill, the band’s singer, issued this non-combative non-response:

“This whole Glee thing is a shock to us. It’s gotten out of hand. At the time of the request, we hadn’t even seen the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting [“Use Somebody”]. This was never meant as a slap in the face to Glee or to music education or to fans of the show. We’re not sure where the anger is coming from.”

AW YEAH! Take that, Murphy! You wanted a fight, you got… Total and complete rock star apathy! How does it taste? Neutral? I bet. Here’s a tip: if you want a fight, don’t go after multi-multi platinum rock stars who’s entire “thing” is appearing like they don’t care about anything. I bet Marilyn Manson would engage you in a Twitter war or something, but Kings Of Leon? Those guys practically wrote the book on 21st century apathy. Good luck with your massively successful show, though. I’m sure Maroon Five won’t say no to having their songs Glee-ified. They basically are already. All you have to do is add choreography. Justin Beiber’s star is rising and there’s nothing that can be done to stop it. But, at least, it can be stalled.

Rumors were circulating that Glee‘ was planning a Justin Bieber-themed episode along the same lines as their Madonna and Britney Spears tributes. Thankfully, showrunner Ryan Murphy has shot holes in that claim.

“Those [tributes] are reserved for artists with big catalogs,” Murphy explains. “Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point.”

And I then added, “Have you seen that kid try to act? F*ck that sh*t.”

You can plan on avoiding that episode and plot point on February 15th. (Entertainment Weekly)

By definition, a “cult classic” is a film that has acquired a highly devoted but specific group of fans. This is certainly true of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which has maintained a devoted following for more than 35 years.

And if there’s one thing devoted fans of a cult film do not appreciate, it’s when you go and screw around with their beloved film. But I guess Glee” creator Ryan Murphy didn’t get the memo, since he recently met with Fox 2000 to discuss a Rocky Horror remake.

Other than the fact that Murphy brings a slew of “Glee” fans to the table, I don’t see the upside. Mainstream audiences can care less about a remake, while Rocky Horror fans will feel alienated. Then again, I could be wrong. After all, it worked for The Wicker Man. (Deadline via Latino Review)

Britney Spears is going to appear on "Glee", according to the show's creator Ryan Murphy. Instead of having a drunken Spears ram her car into the glee club's bus or attempt to buy drugs off of one of the students, the show decided to take the high road by having most of Britney's scenes take place in a dream sequence. After being put under in the dentist's chair, some of the characters from the show will "hallucinate about being like the singer."
