Every year, George R.R. Martin takes a break from not writing his A Song of Ice and Fire books to pen an episode of the TV adaptation, Game of Thrones. Maybe you’ve heard of it? And every season, you can bet that the episode Martin writes is a big one, with implications running through the rest of the series.

NOT THIS SEASON. Martin, who has been dealing with increasing criticism that he really needs to write these books before he dies, has opted out of writing an episode. Instead, he will focus on finishing The Winds of Winter, which is the next installment in the Song of Ice and Fire anthology.

For those unfamiliar, HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s books, but the show seems to be adapting the books faster than Martin can make them. So, barring some glut of production from Martin, we will be forced to wait for him to write the books before more TV can be made. It’s crazy!

Waiting for a book for a TELEVISION SHOW? Everything is all crazy!

Keep writing, George. Faster.

If you are amongst the many who are concerned that 65-year-old George R. R. Martin will die before completing his A Song of Ice and Fire saga, the Game of Thrones author would like to respond. A Swiss newspaper asked him how he felt about those who doubt he’ll survive his magnum opus and Martin responded, “I find that question pretty offensive,” he said. “So f**k you to those people,” before throwing up a middle finger.

I’d expect something a bit more eloquent from the guy who writes Tyrion but it’s simple and to the point. I like it.

He also went on to talk about the fans who get upset when they see him participating in activities like football games, conventions, and press rounds as these keep him away from his writing. Martin noted that he knows his process and he only writes at home when he knows he has a good amount of time reserved to get lost in his work. He doesn’t write in hotel rooms or on planes or trains. That’s why I think Martin should consider living on a houseboat. He’d be able to travel from place to place and his output wouldn’t be effected. Plus, he’s already got the appropriate hat. My feeling is that Game of Thrones should not be allowed to take breaks between seasons. It’s a show that we all want so badly that it should just be on all year-round because any hiatus is too painful. While he doesn’t completely agree with my extreme plan, George R. R. Martin knows where I’m coming from.

Martin took another writing break to sit down with the NY Times and discuss the phenomenon born from beneath his sea captain hat. He also spoke about how a larger episode order would improve the HBO series. “With 13 episodes, we could include smaller scenes that we had to cut, scenes that make the story deeper and richer.” Hopefully those scenes wouldn’t be two people walking around Belfast. We have plenty of those scenes already.

George R.R. Martin, in addition to writing some books that people seem to be pretty fond of, also, really, really likes animals. Which may be a surprise to Game of Thrones fans, who have seen what happens to horses, horse hearts, goats, and rabbits in the hands of clueless squires.

Nonetheless, Martin is active with Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico, a rescue shelter for wolves. He’s currently soliciting donations in Kickstarter-fashion right here. And while for $7,500, you can get one of Martin’s hats (gross), the money shot is the $20,000 tier. For that scratch, George R.R. Martin will write you into one of his next installments of A Song of Ice and Fire, then kill you off in grisly fashion.

Pretty cool. And you get to save wolves. Check it out.

There’s only one thing that can fix “The Mountain and The Viper” and that’s more Ser Pounce and Hans Zimmer music. As they did with the disappointing series finale of How I Met Your Mother, the Internet has also fixed this past week’s episode of Game of Thrones.

Phew! Much better ending. I knew they were just having a goof with us when they aired the horrifying, depressing version. The good guys win!!

With the HBO Game of Thrones series closing in on their source material, is there a chance we’ll see the remainder of the novels wrapped up on the big screen? Author George R. R. Martin says there are ongoing discussions about this.

Martin, who seemingly doesn’t feel the pressure to just finish the damn books already, told The Hollywood Reporter, “It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

No, George. We don’t know because somebody hasn’t written that part yet. I admit seeing Game of Thrones on the big screen with the budget it deserves would be awesome but it’s also unfair to me. Back when I got hooked on this show, nobody explained that there could be a chance I’d have to eventually leave my house in order to enjoy it. That’s dirty pool, HBO and not what I pay you for.

The long-held fear of Game Of Thrones fans has been that author George R. R. Martin will either die before finishing the planned seven book series or the HBO series will catch up to the books before the final novels are finished. Now HBO is having those fears too.

During this week’s TCA panel, show executives Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo addressed the issue of Georgie Need Writey. “Our line to George was ‘keep writing,’” says Plepler.

For now we can count on HBO to continue splitting the books across multiple seasons but if the pace doesn’t pick up this is what we can look forward to seeing in future episodes.

In news that will make casual fans’s nose begin to bleed, Game of Thrones creator, in an effort to create the most intricate the world in the history of man-made art, has hinted that he’ll be creating a prequel series, using a handful of novelas that he’s written, then adding “nine or ten more” (you know, no big deal) to create a backstory for all the characters that we are really invested enough in without further backstory.

While this sounds like a big burden, it might be the best possible use of the author’s time since signing a new development deal with HBO. Since he’s admitted he’s about 3,000 or so pages away (for reals) from completing A Song of Fire and Ice, any project that he’s got a head start on is probably ideal, rather than one that he’s starting from scratch.

Maybe he’ll harken all the way back to the time that Eddard Stark had a head.

Sure, it’s not a new video, but unless you invested the full hour, it’s probably new to you.

The big takeaway from GRRM:

The post Get To Know The 153 New Cast Members Of ‘Game of Thrones’ Season Two appeared first on Screen Junkies.

It’s less than a week before HBO finally rewards us with a second season of Game of Thrones. Unless, of course, it’s HBO’s idea of a funny joke to reveal the premiere was just an April Fool’s Joke, in which case I’ll have their heads on a pike. I hit my limit with the joke The Sopranos finale.

Game of Thrones first season was controversial for it’s liberal use of nudity. While some found it crass, it did help to make boring expository scenes totally enthralling. Like SUPER enthralling. Another criticism of the show has been that there are far too many characters, and following all of their plotlines gets difficult. To those with that complaint, sorry. The cast of Game of Thrones is about to grow from a large amount of people to every single actor in England. But it shouldn’t be that confusing once you get pulled into the story. To help those who need a handy point of reference while watching, we’ve decided to break down all of the new faces we’ll be seeing this April.

Stephen Dillane – Stannis Baratheon

Stephen Dillane of John Adams and King Arthur fame joins the series as Stannis Baratheon, the rightful heir to the throne. He knows that he is next in line and wants what is his. He even goes so far as to align himself with a supernatural priestess who uses a mysterious power to help him.

Liam Cunningham – Davos Seaworth

It wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without creepy quirks for the characters. Liam Cunningham plays one such character. Davos Seaworth (aka The Onion Knight) earned his knighthood by smuggling food to Stannis Baratheon during a siege. Not only did Stannis thank him with knighthood, but he also punished him by cutting the fingers off his left hand. Agreeing with his king’s decree, Davos happily wears his finger bones on a necklace. Let’s hope he takes it off during sex.

Oliver Ford Davies – Maester Cressen

Maester Cressen plays an elderly adviser to Stannis who finds himself in opposition of Lady Melisandre. The two repeatedly struggle against one another for the King’s trust, but there can only be one winner. I hear Wal-Mart’s hiring though, gramps.

Carice van Houten – Lady Melisandre

The Queen B causing everybody stress, Lady Melisandre is the priestess who backs Stannis 100%. It’s one thing to wear a campaign button or change out your Facebook avatar, but to actually start spell-casting to kill his rivals is a bit above and beyond. I guess it’s good to be passionate about something, though.

Gwendolyn Christie – Brienne of Tarth

Not only does Season Two of Game of Thrones feature a witch, but it also has a lady knight! Brienne of Tarth joins Lord Renly’s guard while secretly harboring an attraction to him. The awkward and ugly Brienne is sarcastically referred to as Brienne the Beauty. Series writer George R. R. Martin has assured fans that Gwendolyn is plenty ugly enough for the role when not wearing makeup. Wow. Even for a fantasy writer, not smooth.

Gemma Whelan – Yara Greyjoy

The stand up comic has had roles in The Wolfman and Gulliver’s Travels. But don’t hold that against her. **rimshot**

Whelan will play the long-lost sister of Robb Stark’s best friend/emissary. In the book, she’s known as Asha Greyjoy but will be referred to as “Yara” in the television series. Probably because it sounds like a name that’s easier for a pirate to pronounce. She is a badass warrior that commands a fleet of ships after all.

Patrick Melahide – Balon Greyjoy

Theon’s pops is Lord of the Iron Islands where Theon hails from. He’s sent to bridge the gap between the two families, but seeing as Theon was essentially kidnapped by the Starks, his dad is all like, “Oh, HELL NO!”

Karl Davies – Alton Lannister

This seems to be the only character created specifically for the show. Though it is assumed that he is based on Cleos Frey from the books. One thing is for certain: either way, he is a Lannister. Which means you’d better keep him away from Cersei. She probably wants to put her cougar paws all over him.

Tom Wlaschiha – Jaqen H’ghar

To say anything about Jaqen H’ghar may reveal far too much about the second season for anyone hoping to be in the dark. But rest assured, the German actor is certain to make an impression this season.

Nonso Anozie – Xaro Xhoan Daxos

You may have seen him in this past summer’s Conan the Barbarian or various British series. You’ll now have a chance to Nonso Anozie play the merchant Xaro Shoan Daxos. Though kind of a shady and slippery dude, he offers help to Daenerys as she needs it.

Natalie Dormer – Margaery Tyrell

When Renly proclaims himself as king, he needs to take a queen. Cue The Tudors and Captain America hottie Natalie Dormer to play Margaery Tyrell. It is arranged marriage obviously as Renly is far too busy gettin’ busy with Margaery’s brother Loras, “The Knight of Flowers.” I can’t decide if that’s just plain wrong or the plot of a future Jennifer Aniston movie.

Just know that we appreciate you Margaery.

After more than a week of voting, we have a winner in our Game of Thrones Best of Westeros Tournament. And while nine-out-of-ten times I’ll root for the underdog, I can’t say I’m displeased to see this number one seed make it to the Iron Throne.

Tyrion Lannister has proven unstoppable all week long. While other favorites were knocked off along the way, The Imp continued on like hoard of White Walkers, besting Jon Snow in the final. The only real chance to take him down fell to Arya Stark in the semi-finals, but even the beloved tomboy could not overcome Tyrion’s sarcastic charm. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: people love whore-mongering dwarfs.

We’re down to the final four, and surprisingly, there’s only one #1 seed left in tournament‘ class=’linkify’ target=’_blank’>the tournament. Unfortunately for the competition, it’s the odds-on favorite, Tyrion Lannister (1).

Arya Stark (2) pulled off on upset against her dear old dad, but now she’s facing off against The Imp. As charming as this character is, I don’t think she has what it takes to defeat the whore-mongering half-man, but only time will tell. Jon Snow (3) and Syrio Forel (3) also advanced, and will go head to head, but whoever wins this battle is a major underdog going into the final. The last match-up might not be until Monday, but I have a feeling the tournament will be decided today.

Let the voting begin.

Day four of the “Best of Westeros” Game of Thrones Tournament is here, and were down to the elite eight. For the most part, there haven’t been a lot of surprises with the exceptions of Sandor Clegane (6) and Petyr Baelish (4).

I suppose Baelish, a four seed, isn’t that surprising. I didn’t expect him to knock of King Robert (1), but I shouldn’t have underestimated a man who owns whore houses. Sandor Clegane, on the other hand, is a bit of a shocker. When the six seed won against Joffrey, it made sense, since Joffrey is arguably the biggest asshole in the Seven Kingdoms. However, I didn’t expect him to knock off Jamie Lanister (2) so easily. I figured his hideously deformed face would be a turn off to voters, yet here we are.

But I’m guessing Sandor’s Cinderella story will end today, as he goes head-to-head with fan favorite Tyrion Lannister (1). Elsewhere, Ned Stark must face his tomboy daughter Arya (2), Baelish (4) and Syrio (4) face off, while Dany (1) and Jon Snow (4) fight for control of their region. Let the voting begin.

It‘s time for the Screen Junkies “Best of Westeros” Game of Thrones Tournament! This year, the Iron Throne isn’t the only thing the citizens of Westeros have to fight about. Sure, it’s good to be the king, but what of the most important contest of all? Of course, I’m talking about a popularity contest.

With both Game of Thrones: Season Two (April 1st) and March Madness (March 15th) just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to combine the two into a winner-take-all March Madness-style bracket to determine the most popular character from season one. Aren’t we clever and original? Well, maybe we were somewhat inspired by The Wire bracket over at Grantland. Who’s to say?

Click the bracket for a larger version…

Now is your chance to bring democracy to The Seven Kingdoms and decide who can rightfully claim the top spot as the Best of Westeros. Petyr Baelish vs. Jaime Lannister? The Hound vs. The Mountain? Tyrion vs. Jon Snow? It’s your choice, so head over to our Facebook page and vote for your favorites as we turn 32 characters against one another. Who ya got?

Day One’s Match-Ups…

Voting is closed: Ned Stark (1) wins.

Obviously Ed Stark (1) deserves the number one seed, and should win easily over his youngest son, Rickon (8), who is arguably the least interesting character on the show thus far. I think Ed’s severed head had more lines than poor Rickon.

Voting is closed: Robb Stark (4) wins.

Fans of Game of Thrones who have read the books might have an easy time choosing between Robb Stark (4) and Theon Greyjoy (5). But since this tournament is based solely on season one of the show, the two are pretty evenly matched.

Voting is closed: Catelyn Stark (3) wins.

Who’s it gonna be? Catelyn (2) is tough as nails and out for revenge. But her daughter Sansa (6), while sympathetic, is as dumb as a box of rocks. Then again, maybe you have a thing for gingers?

Voting is closed: Arya Stark (2) wins.

Arya Stark (2) is one of the most likable characters on the show thus far. And while Brandon (7) is also likable, it’s hard to get excited about someone who spends most of his day in bed. Just ask my ex-girlfriend.

Voting is closed: Tyrion Lannister (1) wins.

Tyrion (1) is the odds-on favorite to win the whole tournament, proving once again that everyone loves a whoremonger regardless of his size. So if “The Imp” somehow manages to lose to his father Tywin Lannister (8), a ruthless child murderer, chances are it’s the work of some really bored hackers.

Voting is closed: Bronn (4) wins.

Even though Bronn (4) is a unscrupulous sellsword who fights for the highest bidder, he’s still slightly more likable than Cersei Lannister (5). Still, this should be a close one.

Voting is closed: Sandor Clegane (6) wins.

I feel Joffrey (3) is the more interesting character, but I’m not sure if people will be able to turn off the hatred and vote objectively, which could send The Hound (6) on to the next round. The boy king is basically the LeBron James of the Seven Kingdoms in that you’ll keep watching because you want to see him lose. And by “lose,” I mean die a painful death. Am I talking about Joffrey or LeBron? Yes.

Voting is closed: Jaime Lannister (2) wins.

What’s it gonna be? A guy who kills kings and screws his sister, or an evil knight who killed his own horse in a fit of rage? I’m not a fan of incest, but I do hate animal cruelty. Decisions, decisions!

Most everyone knows that Game of Thrones is a world squeezed out of the noggin of author George RR Martin. But what few know is that his idea of this world is modeled after a sports legend-saturated utopia. If he could’ve rewritten Greek mythology by replacing the gods with the line-up from the 1969 Mets or the early 90s Bulls, he would’ve. So what if his books were written before most of these guys came into prominence, or before some could even walk? If you didn’t catch the uncanny, sometimes blatant nods to these modern-day gladiators and their leaders, here’s the roster run-down. When you’re done being impressed with our prescient comparisons, check out more sports action at Buzzer Beat.

Bill Belichick = Tywin Lannister

game of thrones sports stars

A dubious character for sure, the most fitting example of a doppelganger for Daddy Lannister may be New England’s own BB. From Spygate to making the Patriots football royalty again, the jury is always out on who, or what, Belichick really is. Is he often victorious and successful? Yes. Does he have one hell of an offensive tactical playbook? For sure. Is he the only NFL coach with 3 Superbowl championships under his belt? As far as I know.
Is he a good guy? Well….. that depends on what you mean by good. And this is coming from a life-time New England fan. Imagine what they say about him on the Iron Islands.

One thing I can tell you about TL and BB is that neither are particularly fond of losing.

Since Martin is a staunch NY Jets fan, it only makes sense that the patriarch of the seemingly most villainous family in the first GoT book just happens to be the rival team’s coach. Plus, they both have those icy greenish-blue eyes that tell everyone to eat shit and die.

Pete Rose = Jorah Mormont

sports stars game of thrones

Once a knight, always a knight, or so it goes. These two may be disgraced in the eyes of the high courts, but public opinion has had more to say about weighing the deeds of these deft swordsmen. Ser Jorah was cast from his home amongst his family on Bear Island and Rose out of the grand annals of the MLB, both for crimes that they did commit and that incited knee-jerk moral disapproval.

Big deal – so Jorah sold some poachers into slavery and Petey bet on his sport and against his own organization. These guys just needed some quick cash. For Rose, it didn’t even cure all his money problems, as he was bagged for tax evasion later on.

I suppose neither of them ended up being beheaded for their crimes. However, they did suffer ejection from their homelands – Jorah into the land of the Dothraki and the Free Cities, and Pete Rose into the badlands of Ohio.

What will be their definitive verdicts? Currently, Rose is being stone-walled about Hall of Fame eligibility and Mormont is left to chasing the dragon tail (unless you’ve read ahead and know more). It’s my assumption that there are ‘honorable’ men with worse hidden track records than these two. C’mon, it isn’t like Mormont ran some illegal direwolf fighting racket or anything.

Andre Agassi and Gold Dust = Lord Varys

game of thrones sports starts

All three are masters of whispers, known to talk junk left and right. More importantly, all three wear “the bare crown.” Gold Dust is probably the least comparable in both respects, as it’s in his contract to antagonize and to have a dome fit for a stunning wig. He draws more comparison to Varys in his love of fine garments from the east, while Agassi is primarily known to wear runway jaw-droppers designed in Nike’s finest third-world perspiration castles.

Another likeness of Varys and Agassi, unshared by GD, is their prominent bellies. In his mid-to-late 20′s, Agassi’s most formidable opponent appeared to be his own abdominal girth. For Varys, the gut makes it so he must pay for his young suitors.

Seen as both callous and craven, brilliant but respectfully bankrupt, one can pick and choose the virtues of these damn suave fellas. With Agassi as a gold-slam tennis champ, Varys a high council dignitary at King’s Landing, and Gold Dust holding multiple wrestling titles including the Intercontinental Championship, there’s no shortage of credentials or talent.

…and yes, I consider wrestling a sport.

Season 2 of HBO’s Game Of Thrones has cast its Lord of Bones. And, no, it’s not Steve Buscemi.**goosefart!!*

He’s very skinny, you see.

Anyway, Edward Dogliani has been cast to play the creepy monikered Lord of Bones. But don’t worry, that’s just his porn name. The raider is also well known as “Rattleshirt.” That is because of the noise produced by the armor made of bones that he wears. The actor is relativel unknown, having only appeared in a few shorts. That is all sure to change when Game of Thrones returns to HBO this spring.

Rattleshirt. Hmmm… That’s what separates writers like George R. R. Martin from writers like me. I’d just keep referring to him as That Guy With Bone Armor. Or TGwBA if I don’t feel like typing that much. (THR)

We won’t see a new episode of Game of Thrones until Spring of 2012. Luckily, winter is coming, which means spring isn’t that far off. But for those of you who can’t wait, check out the new teaser trailer for season two.

Yeah, there’s not much to it, which is why it’s called a teaser. Even so, I agree with its sentiment that “The night is dark and full of terrors.” That’s why I stopped going out at night back when I was in high school. Who needs prom when you’ve got the works of George R. R. Martin to keep you company?
