Gary Winick, once a fixture of the NYC independent film community, has passed away at the age of 49 following a fight against brain cancer. As a director, Winick pioneered the use of digital video in the indie community with his early films, Pieces of April, Personal Velocity, and Tadpole. After establishing a name for himself, Winick graduated to more mainstream fare such as 13 Going On 30, Letters to Juliet, and Bride Wars.

While his later work may have lacked the impact of his earlier, more indie-minded films, Winick also took the opportunity to direct several acclaimed pilots such as “Ugly Betty” and “Lipstick Jungle.” Secretaries the world over will miss his contributions to their movies and television. (Hit Fix)
