Rise of the Planet of the Apes was as close to a perfect summer film as you can get. The effects spectacle didn’t lack heart and the story made you empathize with the apes even as they ran around mauling the citizens of San Francisco. There was one area, however, where the movie was lacking… what effect does all this apes rising have on Gary Oldman. Problem solved.

The Dark Knight Rises actor has joined on to play Dreyfus, the leader of the human resistance after the apes have taken over. He’ll join the recently cast Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee, as well as the returning chief chimp-in-charge, Andy Serkis.

We knew things must have been bad when producers of RoboCop hired Michael Keaton to play the robot’s enemy. But we didn’t know just how bad.

Now their just hiring everyday people for the film like Gary Oldman’s manager, for instance. Douglas Urbanski has been cast as the mayor of Detroit, alongside his client who is also starring in the film. If he decides to turn down the role, there are reports that Michael Keaton’s manager is more than interested.
Will he be able to diagnose Robocop's medical problem in time to save him?

Hugh Laurie is most famous to American audiences for playing the lovably cranky medical genius Dr. House on House. But now it looks like he’s going to dial down the lovability and dial up the villainy as “the CEO of Omni Corp” in the upcoming reboot of the Robocop franchise – MGM has entered negotiations with Laurie to get him into the movie.

For those of you who haven’t committed the original Robocop to memory – first of all, what’s wrong with you? But also, the CEO of Omni Corp (the evil corporation of the movie) would appear to be an analogue to Ronny Cox’s character in the original movie. And if the remake goes in a similar direction, you can expect Laurie to be just one of many scoundrels who Robocop gets to blast into oblivion.

Assuming that Laurie and MGM reach an agreement, he’ll be joining a pretty impressive cast that includes Joel Kinnaman as Robocop, Abbie Cornish as Robocop’s wife, Samuel L. Jackson as some kind of media figure (media satire is a big part of the original movie), and Gary Oldman as the scientist who brings Robocop to life. (The AV Club)

Don't get us wrong - we'll still buy from them, we just don't know why they have to make it so unpleasant.

In real life, drug dealers are some pretty unsavory characters. I mean, they make a living (sometimes a very nice one) preying upon the addictions of others. But for the most part, they’re not terribly different than non-drug dealing folk. They see movies, go to barbecues, and might even go shopping on Black Friday. They aren’t one-dimensional characters, cold and merciless.

Well, in the movies, they can be. I don’t need to know if one of them was pissed off when Ruben Studdard won Idol over Clay Aiken, or if another one was waiting in line at Chipotle yesterday. In the movies, drug dealers are representative of a lot more than themselves. They represent the danger, violence, and unpredictability that goes hand-in-hand with the seedy underbelly that protagonists find themselves in. So to watch these actors ham it up as dirtbag dealers really is a thing of beauty.

7. Lance – Pulp Fiction

Lance, played by Eric Stoltz, might be the least sleazy guy on this list, but that doesn’t mean he’s still sleazy. Audience members with any sort of drug-dealer experience know that Lance embodies a fair number of undesirable drug dealer qualities, like paranoia, petulance, and a very short memory.

While his super-pierced girlfriend, played by Rosanna Arquette, was pretty endearing, his eagerness to cut the convo short while customer John Travolta ran around with a dying Uma Thurman was more than a little selfish. He represents a very real lack of customer service in an industry that should live and die by it.

Points for the Fruit Brute cereal, though.

'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' looks like it will be this year's best film about British guys not trusting one another.

From the looks of this new trailer, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy looks like it will be this year’s best film about British guys not trusting one another.

Set during the Cold War, Gary Oldman stars as a former MI6 agent to root out a mole in the upper echelons of the agency. Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham also star. The earlier teaser focused on Cumberbatch’s character whereas this one centers more on Tom Hardy, who first learns of the double-agent and brings the information to the organization. But can he be trusted? I say just fire the whole lot of them.
We have it here for those who didn’t rush to see magical dandy square off against a noseless man.

The trailer picks up with Commissioner Gordon in the hospital with kidney stones. As he lay in pain, he implores that the Batman must return as his crotch is killing him and he can’t possibly fight Tom Hardy‘s Bane in that condition.

Super 8 drew unexpected backlash from people who need to have opinions about things because they felt the film looked too Spielbergish. However, I doubt that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy will draw criticism for its retro 1970′s English vibe.

The English-language debut from Let The Right One In director Tomas Alfredson, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy stars Gary Oldman as a spy in the British Intelligence community trying to uproot a mole amongst its ranks. He sends British Namey Award Winner 2010 Benedict Cumberbatch to investigate five high-ranked agents to figure out which one it is. It turns into a race against time as the mole blows the cover of the best agents. And Colin Firth looks wicked guilty.

'The Professionals' are coming! 'The Professionals' are coming!

The UK television show from the 70s “The Professionals” never made it Stateside, perhaps Americans were too busy watching”The A-Team” to watch a show about boy wizards. Just kidding, it’s actually about secret agents, and of course it’s getting turned into a movie. Here’s a plot synopsis:

“This big-screen version will be an origin story, showing how ex-Spec Ops mercenary Bodie and counter-terrorism detective Doyle unite to work for covert UK security unit CI5.”

The studio, Lionsgate UK, is reportedly courting Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham to play the secret agents, while Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman are being sought to play their boss. It’s too bad they’re not all going to be in the movie – maybe if they’re all interested they’ll have to fight each other for roles. Judging by the list of actors being talked to, this looks to be an action movie in the vein of the recent “older action” movies The Expendables and RED. So tell your parents to be on the lookout for The Professionals. (via Deadline)

No matter who is chosen as the next villain, I’m sure the film will be awesome. Unless, of course, Christopher Nolan has started smoking crack, and decides to go with one of these 9 lame-asses.

Just when you thought you knew all the villains for the upcoming Batman sequel, Gary Oldman comes along and rains on your parade. During the premiere of Red Riding Hood, the actor all but confirmed that Bane and Catwoman are not the only evildoers menacing Gotham, stating that it will include a villain “from way back from the old comics,” and ruling out the Joker. Hugo Strange seems to be the odds-on favorite, and the Riddler’s name pops up from time to time. But no matter who is chosen as the next villain, I’m sure the film will be awesome. Unless, of course, Christopher Nolan has started smoking crack, and decides to go with one of these 9 lame-asses.

Killer Moth

On paper, Killer Moth isn’t that bad. He first appeared in 1951 as a criminal who took on the role of the anti-Batman. He even set up his own “Moth Cave” in order to emulate the caped crusader. But at the end of the day, a guy dressed like a moth just isn’t going to work in a movie. I mean, The Moth Man Prophecies was cheesy enough. Imagine a guy in green spandex pretending to be a bug? Besides, don’t bats eat moths?

King Tut

I loved the 1960’s Batman series when I was a little kid. Guess what? Little kids are stupid. That’s why we don’t let the vote, on drive, or leave their cages on the weekends. That show was awful, so it makes sense that a character made specifically for that show would be awful, as well. Unless you want a fat dude who mistakenly believes he’s the reincarnation of a long dead Egyptia fighting the caped crusader, it’s best they leave him out of the next film.

Kite Man

If you’re a super villain, hang-gliders can be a pretty cool tool. Kites, on the other hand, don’t really elicit the same emotional response, probably because they’re associated with children. Does building an evil reputation based entirely off of a child’s toy sound like a good idea to you? It did to Kite Man. Even his weapons are kite related. I’ve never seen a kite that could withstand a shotgun blast, so I’m not really sure how Kite Man managed to survive this long. Batman should really look into buying a gun.

There is a kick ass way to redo this fairy tale. Instead this is all the boring parts of a teen romance.

Remember that movie Ever After? It was a live-action, more grounded reality-based version of Cinderella. Still in a historical period, but I don’t even think they had magic. Just a glass slipper and mistaken identity. Well, obviously it wasn’t that memorable but I think I recall it being okay. Red Riding Hood is a bad new version of a fairy tale.

Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) lives in a village plagued by a werewolf that lives in the forest. She’s in love with Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) but her mother (Virginia Madsen) has arranged her marriage to Henry (Max Irons). Her grandmother (Julie Christie) makes her red riding hood, although she never rides so it’s just a red hooded cloak.

Father Solomon (Gary Oldman) arrives in Daggerhorn village. He’s the only character with any credibility, like all Gary Oldman characters in otherwise forgettable films. Solomon is the werewolf expert and he plans to flush out the werewolf living in Daggerhorn. Throughout the story, the movie tries to make you think everyone could be the werewolf.

That’s your bold new take on Red Riding Hood? A whodunit? Clutter the story with red herrings until you get to the reveal? Along the way, dwell in the boring town life? There’s a bonfire dance where Valerie canoodles with Prudence (Kacey Rohl) to make Peter jealous. There’s family scandal because Valerie’s father (Billy Burke) is not her sister’s father. Simplistic drama, only the actors all wear costumes and speak in quainter English.

The wolf CGI is bad and its telepathic communication with Valerie is ridiculous. Audience members rightly laughed. They incorporate the “big eyes, big ears, big teeth” line in a sequence so lame it’s not even relevant to the story.

Also, Daggerhorn’s big problem is they live outside a forest ruled by a werewolf. JUST MOVE! It’s only thatched huts we’re talking about. It’s not like they’re locked in with property values like we are today. They can build more thatched huts be another forest, or better yet in a meadow.

There is a kick ass way to redo this fairy tale. Make Valerie’s trip through the forest a Lord of the Rings epic quest building up to the final battle at grandmother’s house. Instead this is all the boring parts of a teen romance.

Catwoman and Bane might get a new evil roommate in the upcoming Batman film. Someone from "way back."

<a href="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/classic-batman-villains.jpg”>Superhero movies are like Thanksgiving turkeys. They won’t taste good unless you stuff duck, chicken, pork, ostrich and some hippo skin in there. In this analogy, the extra meats are villains, because as we learned from Spider-Man 3 and Batman and Robin, the more evil doers, the better. Or to put it in non-sarcastic terms, the opposite of what I just said.

At the premiere for Red Riding Hood, Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon) hinted at the possibility of there being another villain in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises. With Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and Bane (Tom Hardy) already confirmed, that’d be a whole lot more sinisterness in ol’ Gotham.

“If I told you who the villain was, they’d kill me,” said [Oldman] cautiously when pressed for details by E!. “I think it’s a villain from one of the old, old, from way back from the old comics … It is a Batman villian… It’s not going to be the Joker.”

You might think he was accidentally talking about Catwoman, except Oldman then discusses Hathaway later in the interview, saying she “will probably wear the cat suit pretty well.” So he must know that she’s been announced already. He. Must. Know. And that announcement went hand-in-hand with Bane.

So, Bat Detectives, who is this mystery crook the Commissioner’s alluding to? Perhaps it’s a character Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play, since he’s been cast, but his role remains a mystery. Crazy Professor Hugo Strange? He’s a little young for the role, but it’s a possibility. The Riddler? Nolan said there’d be no Riddler in this one, so that answer likely won’t solve this riddle. One hint: Nolan also said he’d like to give Bruce Wayne‘s story closure in this final installment.

Holy Cryptic Actor Statements, Batman. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. (ScreenRant)

Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, and Jason Clarke have all jumped onboard The Wettest County in the World.

Nucky Thompson best watch his back. The bootlegging industry just got a little more cutthroat with Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, and Jason Clarke all jumping on board The Wettest County in the World, a semi-true story of bootlegging in Virginia during the prohibition era. The foursome will join Shia LeBeouf and Tom Hardy, both of whom had already been announced.

The film follows a familiar “cops and robbers” type premise, with the twist being that the robbers are actually bootleggers. LeBeouf will play a rumrunner and boyfriend of Wasikowska, Pearce will play “an overly violent deputy” (awesome), and Oldman will play a good ole’ fashioned gangster, which is out of character. Surely the gangster has to have a massive disfigurement or talk through a voice box or something. Oldman only plays it straight for Batman these days.

The promise of gangster violence and back-country Appalachia sounds pretty appealing, but this movie may need more. Show me a clip of LeBeouf getting beaten to a pulp while a Scott Joplin ragtime tune plays in the background, and I’m sold. (THR)

The Red Riding Hood trailer has hit the internaught, and I have to say, it looks remarkably similar to the trailers I’ve seen for the Twilight films. That’s probably due, in no small part, to the fact that Catherine Hardwicke directed both films. Like Twilight, this film has pretty young women staring longingly at pretty young men, gratuitous slow-motion shots, and a real ‘pedophiles must love this crap’ kind of vibe. Yep, Hardwicke is an auteur. But unlike the Twilight films, Hood, as I like to call it, has real actors. Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman are both in the film, and I’m assuming they must have made a boatload of cash to go slumming this low. Kudos to you, Gary. Take the money and run!
