Who’s Testing For This ‘Bourne Legacy’ Thing Anyways?

Hollywood’s young dudes that didn’t end up being Spider-Man or Captain America are clamoring to play the not-Jason Bourne main character in The Bourne Legacy. A few names have been tossed around like Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Shia LaBeouf, Taylor Kitsch, and Garrett Hedlund previously and now there’s more to add.

Deadline reports that Kitsch, Hedlund, Dominic Cooper, and Joel Edgerton have all been invited to test for the role. Shia LaBeouf is still up for the part but has not been asked to test. There’s enough footage of him running around all sweaty out there. There’s always a chance that the actor who wins the role will not be one that attends the camera tests, which isn’t very cool at all. We’ve all been asked nicely to be conservative with tape stock since the earthquake in Japan. Burning tape on Garrett Hedlund shows no respect to the rest of us.

Akira is considered one on the most important works in all of mangadom and animeland. It’s a Japanese classic, which is why it must be written by the Harry Potter screenwriter and star a franchise-carrying white dude. “Must… scrub… all… Japanese… aspects… away…,” said a hard-at-work Warner Bros. They missed a spot, though – all the characters still have names like Tetsuo and Kaneda. Why not Tony and Kyle? Now those are first names I can relate to.

Andrew Garfield, James McAvoy and Robert Pattinson have been given the current draft of Akira, re-written by Steve Kloves. They’re all up for the lead role of Tetsuo. If the audition requires shirtlessness, Pattinson’s got the experience edge. Meanwhile, for the role of Kaneda, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender and Joaquin Phoenix are under consideration.

The story takes place in the very distant future – 2019 – where a bike gang leader must save his buddy from becoming the victim of a medical experiment. Warner Bros. and director Albert Hughes (From Hell) are excited about the new draft, though probably Albert’s co-director brother Allen is not, since he’s been left out of the picture. Or maybe he too became the victim of a medical experiment somewhere in Neo-Tokyo. (Deadline)

Gyllenhaal and Maguire Battling For ‘Bourne Legacy’ Lead

In case something happened to your memory, Matt Damon has bailed on Jason Bourne, sympathy-bailing on the series with director Paul Greengrass. Bourne trilogy screenwriter Tony Gilroy is now snuggling into the director’s chair for #4, and another actor presumably gets to play a new lucky agent who becomes a one-man ultimate killing machine, courtesy of Operation Treadstone. Who will it be?

The biggest stars in the mix are Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal. If Bourne Legacy requires this new agent to do a lot of embarrassing on-screen crying, I’m guessing Maguire will snag the role. However, there are a bunch of somewhat less famous actors in contention, including Taylor Kitsch (the terrible Gambit from X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Garrett Hedlund (Jeff Bridges’ kid from Tron: Legacy) and Kellan Lutz (one of the Twilight-ers). Gilroy is insisting that all the actors screen test, so we’re guessing he’s not a total web-head or Twi-hard.

The Bourne Legacy is tentatively scheduled to open fire on theaters August 2012. (The Playlist)
