Ryan Gosling is ready to do for the tommy gun what he did for the hammer. The first trailer for Gangster Squad is here with all your modern favorites. Josh Brolin and Gosling star as the heads of a group of cops turned gangster killers with their sights set on Sean Penn’s Mickey Cohen. Anyway I think that’s Sean Penn. Looks more like when Johnny Knoxville and Spike Jonze play pranks disguised as old people on Jackass.

Emma Stone took one look at the roster of Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena, and Giovanni Ribisi and said, “Hey! Me too!” The film, directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer tells the tale of cops and mobsters in 1940′s Los Angeles.

It looks like she’s getting her wish as she’s now in talks with the producers to play Jean, a sassy lady caught in romances between Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, Variety reports.

Stone has made quite a name for herself moving from supporting roles in films like Superbad and Zombieland to starring roles in Easy A and the much-hyped The Amazing Spider-Man, so why wouldn’t she want in on the biggest drama Hollywood’s got up its sleeve, save for perhaps The Savages?

Dammit! She’s Emma Stone, she’s gonna be in Gangster Squad whether you want her to be or not!

Bryan Cranston Exits ‘Gangster Squad’ Because He’s In Every Other Movie http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/bryan-cranston-exits-gangster-squad-because-hes-in-every-other-movie/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/bryan-cranston-exits-gangster-squad-because-hes-in-every-other-movie/#comments Wed, 20 Jul 2011 19:36:49 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=221100 We'll just have to settle for him appearing in everything else.

Don’t you dare shed a tear, Cranston fans. Not a tear. Despite his exit from Ruben Fleishcer’s star-studded Gangster Squad, you will still get a heaping portion of Cranston in (deep breath): Argo, Contagion, Season 4 of Breaking Bad, Drive, Total Recall, Rock of Ages, Red Tails, and John Carter (formerly of Mars). So dry those wetted eyes.

It was everyone’s understanding that Cranston would crank out Argo, then move right on to Gangster Squad. However, because Cranston was unable to find a machine that would clone him, he was forced to drop the project.

Since the conflict with Argo was due to the fact that Gangster Squad was filming late-summer/early-fall, it’s safe to assume that filming on the Ben Affleck film will begin around the same time.

While Cranston won’t be in the much-anticipated L.A. gangster epic, it seems he will still be in every other film shooting over the next nine months, so let’s all try to be adult about this. WHY? WHY CAN’T HE BE IN GANGSTER SQUAD?

Bryan Cranston‘s agent better be wearing a helmet, cause he’s probably doing backflips with the recent influx of high profile films that Cranston’s found his way into. The Malcolm in the Middle dad (also, Breaking Bad star) has just been offered a role in the star-studded Gangster Squad (also starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena and Anthony Mackie) as Max Kennard, a Texas-transplant LAPD officer. No other details were given except that he’s “laconic.” Here’s a dictionary. I needed it, anyway.

This role comes on the heels of a flurry of activity that has ushered Cranston into Rock of Ages, Total Recall, John Carter of Mars, and Argo.

All high profile films, all shooting now (or soon). I don’t know how he’s going to manage this while also serving as the epicenter of Breaking Bad, but it’s nice to see the guy get some great work. That said, if any of these jobs have a negative impact on his portrayal of Walter White, I will boycott the studios responsible. And I have some serious clout in Hollywood. Okay, a blog, but my mom reads it every day.

Everything’s Coming Up Anthony Mackie http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/everythings-coming-up-anthony-mackie/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/everythings-coming-up-anthony-mackie/#comments Fri, 29 Apr 2011 22:20:43 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=209809 You'll very likely see him in 'World War Z' and 'Gangster Squad'. He's come a long way from rap battling Eminem.

Anthony Mackie has officially gone from an “Oh Yeah, That Guy!” to a bankable movie star. Thanks to The Hurt Locker, you’ll see him in some high-profile roles very soon that don’t require him to do bad imitations of Tupac.

He’s received an offer to battle the undead alongside Brad Pitt in World War Z and is being looked at for a role in Gangster Squad. No idea what characters he will portray in either but we can assume both will require him to kick some ass. Especially the zombies. They need to learn they can’t go around biting everyone. (Variety)

‘Ness/Capone’ Project Proves Movie Trends Aren’t Always Awful http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/nesscapone-project-proves-movie-trends-arent-always-awful/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/nesscapone-project-proves-movie-trends-arent-always-awful/#comments Thu, 28 Apr 2011 00:23:20 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=209349 One more in an onslaught of mob movies sure beats all that vampire crap that wouldn't go away.

Well, it appears that studios are once again hip to the fact that some viewers really enjoy compelling stories and contextual violence. For that reason, it appears as though mob movies are back in full swing with the latest being Ness/Capone, a take on the cat-and-mouse relationship that is decidedly different from DePalma’s The Untouchables. Ness/Capone seems to suggest a more taunting, prideful dynamic between the G-Man and the mob boss.

Of course, because it’s not possible for Hollywood to have just one of any type of film in development at a time, we feel obligated to report that Warner Bros. has gotten cracking on Cicero, a Capone film that outlines his rise to power, which also sounds kind of awesome. David Yates, director of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has expressed interest in Cicero, though he’s not yet attached.

Warner is also getting dirty with Gangster Squad, which is a historical mob pic that focuses on LA kingpin Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn) and also will star Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin.

Rather than promoting a clear favorite, I really just hope all three of these get made. They sound awesome.  (Deadline)
