No shortage of characters.

The parallels between this endeavor and Boardwalk Empire are numerous, but since no one’s really complaining about the presence of Boardwalk Empire in their lives, let’s see what Gangs director Martin Scorsese and Miramax can do with a slightly older large-scale period crime series.

Word on the street (Tinseltown Blvd, that is) is that Scorsese wants to dive into the period in a fashion that he just couldn’t do in the almost-three-hour film. While that may seem ambitious, it’s been a healthy dose of delusional ambition that has brought us some of the best television of the past decade and has pared down the asinine fare like According to Jim and any TV show with acronyms.

He’s Martin Scorsese. He can do this if he really wants to.

That's not a riot. This is a riot.

As the Clash once sang, “London is drowning, and I live by the river.” Well, London isn’t drowning, it’s burning in a third night of unprecedented rioting that has now spread throughout the country. As police fight pitched battles with angry mobs, all we can do is sit and watch as the violence unfolds. Or, if that’s not to your liking, you can sit and watch these nine intense cinematic riot scenes, instead. The choice is yours.

Gangs of New York

This extremely violent Martin Scorsese film focuses on 19th century Irish immigration set against the backdrop of the 1863 New York City Draft Riots. As nativist and immigrant gangs fight for control of the city’s Five Points slum, political forces beyond their control come to a head. And by “come to a head,” I mean mobs of marauding rioters outraged over the recently enacted draft bring the city to its knees. While the incident might have made for one of the darker chapters in U.S. history, it also made for one hell of a movie.
