By Jared Jones

Yesterday, Warner Bros. announced that they had finally locked down a director for their upcoming Wonder Woman movie, and for some crazy reason, it’s not Brett Ratner. Instead, The Hollywood Reporter has recently confirmed that veteran television director Michelle MacLaren will not only take the helm for the upcoming blockbuster, but will be working alongside a crew of unnamed writers to draft up the script as well.

If you happen to be a Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, or Game of Thrones fan (of which 99.9% of television viewers are), chances are that you’re already familiar with some of MacLaren’s work. Since making her directorial debut in a 2002 episode of The X-Files, MacLaren has directed one-off episodes of everything from Law & Order: SVU to Hell on Wheels to The River, ABC’s found footage experiment that was sadly axed after just a season back in 2012.

Hiring a female to direct a superhero movie even one focused on a woman — is practically unheard of in the modern era, sad as it is to say. So to put all your little fanboy hearts at ease, we’ve gathered up eight clips from MacLaren’s body of work to familiarize you with one of the small screen’s hardest working directors.

The X-Files – “John Doe”

MacLaren began her career as a production manager and producer on a handful of short-lived shows and TV movies (most notable among them, Diagnosis Murder) before taking the directorial plunge in a 2002 episode of The X-Files. In the seventh episode of the ninth season, “John Doe”, MacLaren was paired with future Breaking Bad creator and collaborator Vince Gilligan, who handled writing duties, and the result, unsurprisingly, was an episode that received far better reviews than the majority of the lackluster 9th season and scored a 5.0 Nielsen rating.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit — “Infected”

The twelfth episode of SVU‘s seventh season told the story of a young boy (Malcolm David Kelley) who takes the law (and possibly the order) into his own hands by killing the man who murdered his mother. A high profile case revolving around the gun violence debate soon follows, and my guess is that at some point, Ice-T pauses to recap the episode via a series of rhetorical questions.

Breaking Bad — “4 Days Out”

MacLaren’s work on “John Doe” clearly left an impression on Gilligan, who would bring her into the Breaking Bad fold some eight years later to direct the ninth episode of season two. “Four Days Out” was one of those Breaking Bad episodes — like “Fly” or “…And the Bag’s in the River” — that took place largely in one location and focused on the relationship between Walt and Jesse over any overarching plot. It’s a beautifully shot entry in the Breaking Bad canon (see above), and one that likely led to MacLaren being brought on as an executive producer at the start of the third season.

Breaking Bad — “One Minute”

Featuring two of Aaron Paul‘s greatest monologues (“What happens now?” and “Ever since I met you“) and quite possibly the most intense endings in Breaking Bad history, ”One Minute” has rightfully earned its place as a fan favorite episode. Opening with the brutal beating of Jesse Pinkman at the hands of ASAC Schrader and bringing a brutal end to the Cousins’ subplot in the episode’s final moments, MacLaren flat out crushed it here.

The sprawling world and popularity of Game of Thrones is a franchisor’s wet dream. There is no end to the amount of DVD’s, posters, dragon Trapper Keepers, and SkyMall swords that can be slapped with the show’s name, and all of a sudden, they’re legit.

And with George R.R. Martin taking his sweet-ass time on the books, and new episodes appearing only every ten months or so, there’s a lot of unmet Game of Thrones demand from America. So it should come as little surprise that the empire may expand to conquer movie theaters so that it may squash their heads until those theater heads explode.

Charles Dance, who plays Tywin Lannister, said to Daily Beast in promoting his upcoming film The Imitation Game, “There’s talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don’t know which of the storylines. There’s so much to cram into a film.”

Yes, Charles. There IS a lot to cram in a film. But there’s even more material to NOT cram into a film, right? What? Yes. Considering no less than Martin himself said this was a possibility earlier, I think we should start to get a little excited about this.

In case you were worried that the cast of Game of Thrones might pull a Big Bang Theory and just storm off-set until the producers dumped buckets of money on their heads…you can rest easy for two years.

It’s being reported that the sprawling cast of the sprawling show has struck a deal to make them the richest cable actors today. I don’t know exactly what that means or who is treated to such lavish compensation, but it puts me at ease. We do know that the cast was broken up into tiers, and that the “A” tier consisted of your usual Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau-types. Sad to see the Eunuch didn’t make the cut, but that’s life, I guess.

The good news is that the show is constantly saving money by killing off its highest-paid stars, so there’s always a budget line item looking to be reallocated to a giant headcrushing man or a young girl with a tiny, awesome sword.

Word has come from no less than Hodor himself, actor Kristian Nairn, that both he and his charge Bran will have off the whole upcoming season of Game of Thrones. No appearances, no nothing, as their fate is tied to to the books in some way that makes it uncertain as to where they go from here. (Note: I’m not entirely clear on the reasoning, and don’t want to speculate.)

Soooooo, that gives us the opportunity to show Hodor/Nairn in a Christmas sweater, and remind everyone that he’s a dance music DJ that throws an event called Rave of Thrones. All awesome.

The post ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spanish Casting Call Gets 86,000 Applicants For 600 Extra Spots appeared first on Screen Junkies.

The fervor and extremely high interest in a Game of Thrones casting call for 600 extras in Osuna, Spain indicates: a) the Spanish really, really, really like Game of Thrones, b) the Spanish have hugely high unemployment and will take most any job they’re offered, or c) both.

I’m going with “c.”

The extras are applying to be in a huge battle scene, and with Spain standing in for the digs of Houses Martell and Dorne, perhaps there is some spoiler abound. But considering I can’t keep up with what happened five minutes ago on Game of Thrones, I’m not about to speculate regarding future events.

Anyway, with this level of interest, I think it’s safe to say that the producers of the show can simply use Spanish extras for most every need they see. They could stack Spaniards to form the wall, they could tape three together to be The Mountain…lots of problems solved with this story.

In an intuitive piece of casting news, the actor who played Mr. Eko on LostAdewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, will be taking a role on the next season of Game of Thrones, and possibly beyond, provided he doesn’t get killed. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje will be playing someone by the name of Malko, who, curiously, doesn’t appear in any of George R.R. Martin’s books. Not sure if that’s a first, but it sure seems indicative that they’re telling their own story here, and aren’t necessarily beholden to Martin’s vision through and through.

I’d like to think that he’s the guy who takes down the Mountain, then rules all of Westeros.

Eh, he’ll probably be on for three episodes then get eaten by a wolf.

We’ve seen the cheesy ’80s version and the crappy ’90s version and the singing goats version. Today brings the swinging ’60s Saul Bass-inspired opening. We won’t have a ’70s version until footage surfaces of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wearing a velour jumpsuit.

Every year, George R.R. Martin takes a break from not writing his A Song of Ice and Fire books to pen an episode of the TV adaptation, Game of Thrones. Maybe you’ve heard of it? And every season, you can bet that the episode Martin writes is a big one, with implications running through the rest of the series.

NOT THIS SEASON. Martin, who has been dealing with increasing criticism that he really needs to write these books before he dies, has opted out of writing an episode. Instead, he will focus on finishing The Winds of Winter, which is the next installment in the Song of Ice and Fire anthology.

For those unfamiliar, HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s books, but the show seems to be adapting the books faster than Martin can make them. So, barring some glut of production from Martin, we will be forced to wait for him to write the books before more TV can be made. It’s crazy!

Waiting for a book for a TELEVISION SHOW? Everything is all crazy!

Keep writing, George. Faster.

If you are amongst the many who are concerned that 65-year-old George R. R. Martin will die before completing his A Song of Ice and Fire saga, the Game of Thrones author would like to respond. A Swiss newspaper asked him how he felt about those who doubt he’ll survive his magnum opus and Martin responded, “I find that question pretty offensive,” he said. “So f**k you to those people,” before throwing up a middle finger.

I’d expect something a bit more eloquent from the guy who writes Tyrion but it’s simple and to the point. I like it.

He also went on to talk about the fans who get upset when they see him participating in activities like football games, conventions, and press rounds as these keep him away from his writing. Martin noted that he knows his process and he only writes at home when he knows he has a good amount of time reserved to get lost in his work. He doesn’t write in hotel rooms or on planes or trains. That’s why I think Martin should consider living on a houseboat. He’d be able to travel from place to place and his output wouldn’t be effected. Plus, he’s already got the appropriate hat. Game of Thrones is stepping up the class of their alcoholic beverages a bit. There’s been a beer affiliated with the show for a while, but there’s a world of difference between a simple beer, and a classy, bougie wine.

So with that in mind, an ad agency from Australia named Common Ventures is making an “unofficial” wine because they “…love the show. Hopefully you do too.” I DO love the show. But that doesn’t mean I’ll like your bootleg, license-infringing wine, Common Ventures.

The wines are named after the various Houses in Westeros, but won’t be out until the season 5 premiere next year, which should be plenty of time for the studio and George R.R. Martin to find out about this and sue Common Ventures until they don’t know what’s what.

Oh, and in case that headline didn’t make any sense, it refers to this.

Man, it’s hard to talk about Game of Thrones without walking on eggshells, but here we go: Maisie Williams, who plays the adorable little ball of hate Arya Stark, recently said that she hopes The Hound makes a return to the show.

Now, I can only assume that if you’ve made it this far in the article, you’re either current on this show or indifferent to spoilers, so I can speak freely. The last time we left The Hound, he was mortally wounded from his fight with Brienne, begging Arya to kill him. He even tried antagonizing her. Arya walked away, letting him suffer from his wounds. Like a badass.

It’s natural to assume The Hound died, as he wasn’t in great shape, but Game of Thrones rarely allows viewers to make those leaps without consequences.

So maybe Maisie will get her wish. This would all be moot if any of us were book-readers.

Warning! Mild Spoilers Ahead!

Before he gave the world Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes made a brilliant film that could very easily be considered the little brother of Downton. One could even call it, just as Miami Rhapsody is to Sex and the City, a film prototype of the television series to come. Filled with quick wit, pomp and circumstance, and Maggie Smith’s piercing looks, Gosford Park is a cozy romp into British peerage. Now, sure, the mansion in Gosford is nothing compared to Highclere Castle, the home of Downton. That said, Wrothman Park, where the exteriors of Gosford and a few other scenes were shot, is an admirable facade, giving great respect to the classes of guests that converge under its roofs for a weekend of shooting, bridge, and, because we’re in a giant mansion in the thirties, murder.

Which brings us to cast. Gosford Park is a glittering assemblage of Britain’s greatest stars, including Helen Mirren, Kristen Scott Thomas, and Richard Harris who would go on to play Professor Dumbledore in five of the Harry Potter movies alongside Dame Maggie Smith, also in Gosford Park . When it comes to secondary cast, we’ve got an adorable Ryan Phillippe, Emily Watson and Charles Dance, who American audiences now know as Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones. So often, British stars are used to make characters in an American blockbusters evocative, making Gosford Park a joy to watch, as all these greats don’t have to deal with silly costumes or synching with CGI magic. All they have to do is act, and in this film they act like there’s no tomorrow. Also keep a lookout for a young Clive Owen smouldering below stairs.

Julian Fellowes is a genius. He has such a sense of timing, of nuance. Wielding this amount of characters, as he also does in Downton Abbey, is daunting just to watch. I can’t imagine writing them all and keeping track of their storylines. And yet, Mr. Fellowes manages with great ease. From the the most common of chamber maids to the master of the house each character is drawn with such attention and warmth that every player feels necessary, not a single wasted character in the bunch.

The story, like any aristocratic bunch of blue bloods, is twisted and at times cumbersome. Much is played off screen, leaving the viewer to figure out for themselves that Charles Dance and Richard Harris are brothers in the film. But those ambiguous facts make the viewing of this film all the more enjoyable. Beyond the core mystery of who killed the head of the house and why, is the mystery of how everyone is related. The movie culminates in an unexpected reveal that comes after what the viewer thinks is the climax. It’s a joy for attentive movie goers, over-thinkers, and film nuts.

The attention to detail is as perfect as expected. Not a napkin or diamond is out of place, madam’s hot chocolate waiting for her just as she’s about to go to bed. Even the dropping of a Bloody Mary on muddy cement (and its almost instantaneous cleaning) is done with such panache one can’t help but read something of the doomed fate of the English gentry in all that red and brown liquid mixing together among the broken glass.

Gosford Park makes life in the English countryside look just as glamorous as it was awful. Shared bathrooms, washing clothes in a basin, and nearly getting shot while hunting birds, let alone all the hangers-on clamoring for your money. Shit was rough back in the day. That said, Gosford Park depicts the pitfalls and luxuries so well that I can’t say I wouldn’t give up the Internet and pool for cold water basins and nights of classical music.

If you’ve seen this movie you totally get what I mean. They’ve been showing the movie a lot on the premium channels, and whenever it’s on, I can’t help but see what’s going to happen, for with such a overlapping and nuanced stories built around numerous complicated characters, Gosford Park is one of those movies that unfolds anew with each re-watching. Every time I see it, I learn something new, another layer of the onion is revealed.

This Jimmy Kimmel Live! mash-up features superimposed Game of Thrones simpleton Hodor competing on Family Feud. It’s got everything. It’s got a man with a one-word vocabulary, it’s got Steve Harvey, it’s got…everything.

Also, it should be noted that this is based on an actual recent, terrible round of Family Feud that can be seen right here. It actually would be funnier than the Hodor thing if it wasn’t so awful. Take a look.

My feeling is that Game of Thrones should not be allowed to take breaks between seasons. It’s a show that we all want so badly that it should just be on all year-round because any hiatus is too painful. While he doesn’t completely agree with my extreme plan, George R. R. Martin knows where I’m coming from.

Martin took another writing break to sit down with the NY Times and discuss the phenomenon born from beneath his sea captain hat. He also spoke about how a larger episode order would improve the HBO series. “With 13 episodes, we could include smaller scenes that we had to cut, scenes that make the story deeper and richer.” Hopefully those scenes wouldn’t be two people walking around Belfast. We have plenty of those scenes already.

George R.R. Martin, in addition to writing some books that people seem to be pretty fond of, also, really, really likes animals. Which may be a surprise to Game of Thrones fans, who have seen what happens to horses, horse hearts, goats, and rabbits in the hands of clueless squires.

Nonetheless, Martin is active with Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico, a rescue shelter for wolves. He’s currently soliciting donations in Kickstarter-fashion right here. And while for $7,500, you can get one of Martin’s hats (gross), the money shot is the $20,000 tier. For that scratch, George R.R. Martin will write you into one of his next installments of A Song of Ice and Fire, then kill you off in grisly fashion.

Pretty cool. And you get to save wolves. Check it out.

There’s only one thing that can fix “The Mountain and The Viper” and that’s more Ser Pounce and Hans Zimmer music. As they did with the disappointing series finale of How I Met Your Mother, the Internet has also fixed this past week’s episode of Game of Thrones.

Phew! Much better ending. I knew they were just having a goof with us when they aired the horrifying, depressing version. The good guys win!!

The post George R.R. Martin Might Be Piling An Eighth ‘Song Of Ice And Fire’ Book appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
It’s good to know that even the author of Game of Thrones and it’s ancillary books gets confused sometime. George R.R. Martin, who has been doing God knows what instead of writing those damn books, had originally planned to do one book for each of the seven kingdoms. But then, for reasons that we can’t really ascertain, having not read all of the antecedent books, there’s an eighth kingdom.

So that means, under Martin’s current bizarre sense of obligation to every kingdom, an eighth book. Which means the series goes on.

Normally, this would be welcome news, but the fact that Martin is 65 years old and not a picture of health means that it just increases the likelihood the guy could die before finishing the story, as HBO is burning through the books at about a rate of one per season.

Maybe, turn the last few into a graphic novel, George?

Even though they’ve been filming for a couple weeks, the producers of Star Wars aren’t ready to let the casting rumors and hype die down just yet. Today, news came out that Lupita Nyong’o will be joining the cast. Because it’s a J.J. Abrams project, and those projects are super-secret, we don’t know the plot of the film or the role Nyong’o will play in it.

We’ll also be getting Gwendoline Christie, who plays the giant warrior Brienne in Game of Thrones. My guess is that she’ll be painted black and portray the Death Star, but my guesses are normally terrible.

The movie will premiere in December of 2015, which will probably be about the time come to terms with the fact that Brienne, along with every other Game of Thrones character, has been fed to bears by Littlefinger.

“It’s the culmination of 20 years of anger and hatred and thirst for vengeance coming to a head in this amazing set piece that [stunt coordinator Paul Herbert and swordmaster C.C. Smiff] have put together. The fight delivers beyond our expectations.” In other words, lots of kicking and flipping.

HBO Is Killing It With Their Sunday Night Lineup Right Now http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/hbo-is-killing-it-with-their-sunday-night-lineup-right-now/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/hbo-is-killing-it-with-their-sunday-night-lineup-right-now/#comments Tue, 06 May 2014 15:42:57 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=261471 Sunday night belongs to HBO. Not legally, of course. But figuratively.

The post HBO Is Killing It With Their Sunday Night Lineup Right Now appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
While it’s no surprise that HBO has rolled out some pretty strong television in Veep, Silicon Valley, and, of course, Game of Thrones, it seems that the lineup is translating into some of the best ratings the network has ever seen for its original series.

Game of Thrones is up about 25% from where it was last year, Veep is up 17% over last year, and Silicon Valley, which doesn’t have a previous season to compare against, has carried about 5.4 million viewers per episode, which…sounds like a lot.

While these numbers are impressive, the fact they’re on a network that requires not only cable service, but an additional premium subscription that costs more than Netflix makes them downright gaudy.

Of course, this is arguably the best face that HBO can put forward, considering that their drama lineup is pretty weak these days outside Game of Thrones. But enough about that. Let’s stay positive and just be happy that some good television is experiencing success. Hopefully at the expense of some singing competition or something.

While I would rank geographical uncertainty as one of my lower points of confusion in follow Game of Thrones (#1 being: “Who are these guys and what’s going on?”), it’s still nice to have a map that gives some sense of context to the sprawling world.

I want to say the whole arena is called Westeros, but that might just be a place in the bigger world. That’s how confused I am by Game of Thrones. Fortunately, there’s a map for that.

This map. Which offers interactivity to guide you through your travels while you raise an army, run from a king, or just drink a bunch of wine out of a pig bladder while going for a walk.

Actually, the map also tells you what’s going on where, and who’s visited what places. Helpful stuff.
