It's 2012's hijinksiest film.

The Coen Brothers have veered once again into remake territory and the results seem to be ugh. A remake of the Michael Caine/Shirley Maclaine 1960′s heist flick, Gambit, brings the Coens aboard as writers only. So they can’t take the brunt of the blame like with The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty. Those this film definitely has the same work-for-hire feel those movies share.

Feel free to watch the trailer, but I should warn you that Cameron Diaz speaks in an over-the-top Southern accent. In other words, don’t watch the trailer.

The world is on tenterhooks to see if Colin Firth has conquered his debilitating stutter in time for his new “crime-comedy” entitled Gambit, which is a little bit like calling your romantic comedy Wolverine. It also stars Cameron Diaz, Stanley Tucci, Cloris Leachman, and Alan Rickman. The movie seems to be something to get excited about, mostly because it was written by the reliable-to-say-the-least Joel and Ethan Coen. Here’s what it’s about:

“Firth plays British art curator Harry Deane, who devises a finely-crafted scheme to con England‘s richest man and avid art collector, Lionel Shabandar, (Rickman) into purchasing a fake Monet painting. In order to bait his buyer, he recruits a Texas rodeo queen (Diaz) to cross the pond and pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.”

Between that synopsis and the Coens’ involvement, this looks like it will be twisty fun. Below you can see the first photo from the movie, featuring Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth – and I promise you, this is 100% authentic, and in no way a fake. Just trust me.

Haha, Hans Gruber! Mega-heists aren't so awesome when they're happening to you, are they?

Apparently, one slow-talking Brit is not enough for the producers of Gambit, as Alan Rickman will join Colin Firth (and Cameron Diaz) in the remake of the 1966 heist film starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine.

The film, set to shoot in May in jolly old England, centers on a thief (Firth) that garners the participation of a beautiful woman (Diaz) to steal a priceless statue from a billionaire (Rickman). Haha, Hans Gruber! We’ll see how you like a taste of your own medicine! Mega-heists aren’t so awesome when they’re happening to you, are they?

Considering the script is penned by Joel and Ethan Cohen, might this be the first film to not portray Colin Firth as the world’s biggest buzzkill? Or will he portray a frustratingly droll and staid thief? The anti-Thomas Crown, if you will? Here’s to hoping they sprinkle some ecstasy over the craft service table and get a livelier performance from him for this one. Failing that, maybe some caffeinated tea will suffice. (THR)

'Gambit' stars Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth in a remake of a 1986 British heist film. This is a remake that actually looks promising.

When I first heard a movie called Gambit was coming out, my thought was: “oh no, they’re not gonna ruin my favorite X-Men character again, are they?” When I found out it was a comedy written by <a href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/coen-brothers-working-on-a-movie-scarier-than-the-big-lebowski/”>Joel & Ethan Coen, to be distributed by CBS Films, I was relieved. When I thought about an X-Men Gambit movie written by the Coen brothers, I was very intrigued indeed.

Anyway, Gambit stars Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth in a remake of a 1986 British heist film. The film is about the attempted robbery of a rich man’s statue by an art curator (Firth) and a “Texas Rodeo Queen” (Diaz). Mike Hoffman (The Last Station) will direct all this glittery, Oscar-winning talent.

CBS Films has been throwing movies out there like energy-charged playing cards. So far, films like Beastly and The Mechanic haven’t really been hittin the box office that hard, but Gambit might be the new ace up their sleeve.

FYI, my mutant power is making dorky analogies. (ComingSoon)

Cameron Diaz has joined the cast of the Joel and Ethan Coen scripted 'Gambit', which is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name. Also, Colin Firth!

Cameron Diaz, currently starring in The Green Hornet, the movie that half your friends hated, has joined the cast of the Joel and Ethan Coen scripted Gambit, which is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name. Michael Hoffman, director of The Last Station, will go behind the camera to tell the story of a con man (Colin Firth) who aims to grift an art collector into buying a fake Monet painting. Diaz will play a Texas steer roper(!) who poses as the daughter of the man who supposedly acquired the painting at the end of World War II. Gambit starts shooting in London this May. It’ll be interesting to hear Diaz’s approximation of a Texas accent, and Firth’s first stutter-free performance since The King’s Speech. (Deadline)
