Much like the ragtag heroes at its center, G.I. Joe: Retaliation defied the odds and kicked the evil shapeshifter out of the box office White House. Surprisingly, anticipation for the sequel has been at a fever pitch after the awesome-but-dopey original and a postponed release. Then again, this film features ninjas fighting on a mountain face and who doesn’t want to see that sh*t?

Thanks to this weekend’s successful take, Paramount has granted the greenlight to a third G.I. Joe film. As of now, John M. Chu is not attached to direct nor are any of the sequel’s cast signed to return. However, offers will likely go out soon. What really remains to be discussed is which exciting locale will ninjas next clash? Maybe on the side of a large hovercraft that can float on lava?? I’d go see that. (Variety)

Adrianne Palicki’s hopes of running around television in tight leather may have not worked out, but that doesn’t mean she won’t get the chance on the big screen. The one-time Wonder Woman star will play the female lead in John M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes. Also starring Channing Tatum as Duke, The Rock as Roadblock and RZA as Blind Master, Palicki will play the covert operations specialist Lady Jaye. She’s also the team’s specialist in power javelin and various tipped spear weaponry. Every team has one of those, right? Well, the best ones do. (Deadline)

RZA And DJ Cotrona Join ‘G.I. Joe is going to try a different approach this time. That makes sense.

RZA will bring his distinct aura of Wu-Tang of cool to the (thus far) uncool G.I. Joe franchise for round 2. Joe also got Detroit 1-8-7 star DJ Cotrona to join as well, who…I’m sure is a really great guy, but not bringing the cool. ¬†Cotrona will be playing Flint, while RZA will be playing a decidedly more badass kung-fu character named the Blind Master. Now we’re getting somewhere.

In other G.I. Joe news, the participation of The Rock has gone from being a foregone conclusion to just a conclusion. He will be playing Roadblock. All you really need to know about Roadblock is that he is enormous and carries a .50 caliber machine gun. Works for me.

The series has essentially gotten a reboot for the sequel after the original didn’t seem to pass muster with fans nor critics. Jon Chu will be taking over helming duties and Channing Tatum will be returning, but the rest of the cast will be new to the franchise.

While it’s not exactly poised for critical acclaim, the sequel certainly sounds more interesting with these recent additions. (THR, Variety)

Do we really need a sequel to 2009′s G.I Joe? Box office receipts aside, did anyone come away from that movie with any real satisfaction? The whole thing smacks of film making as a numbers game, and the search for a sequel director isn’t helping, as Paramount is batting around 3 different but equally middling talents for the job. Jon Chu (Step Up 2, 3),¬† Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown), and F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) are all being considered.

Honestly though, who cares? And that’s not even a snarky, sarcastic blogger question. I really want to talk to someone who cares passionately about either G.I Joe getting a sequel, or any of these three directors. Okay, I will personally admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for Step Up 2 The Streets. I like movies about break-dancing and I saw it on Valentines Day 2008 with my ex girlfriend, okay? There, I said it. Does that mean I want to see G.I Joe pop and lock all over Cobra Commander’s shiny face mask? Yes? Did I just accidentally endorse Jon Chu as the lesser of 3 evils because he knows how to shoot people dancing? Fine. Congrats to everyone! Enjoy your paychecks! We’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labor on coast-to-coast flights, and on HBO at 3 am sometime in the near future. (The Playlist)
