Much like the ragtag heroes at its center, G.I. Joe: Retaliation defied the odds and kicked the evil shapeshifter out of the box office White House. Surprisingly, anticipation for the sequel has been at a fever pitch after the awesome-but-dopey original and a postponed release. Then again, this film features ninjas fighting on a mountain face and who doesn’t want to see that sh*t?

Thanks to this weekend’s successful take, Paramount has granted the greenlight to a third G.I. Joe film. As of now, John M. Chu is not attached to direct nor are any of the sequel’s cast signed to return. However, offers will likely go out soon. What really remains to be discussed is which exciting locale will ninjas next clash? Maybe on the side of a large hovercraft that can float on lava?? I’d go see that. (Variety)

When Paramount made the last minute decision to rob the summer of 2012 of its greatest pleasure, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, in order to add more Channing Tatum, they drew our ire. And made an other perfect episode of Workaholics make little sense. But now Paramount would like to remind you, that this movie still exists and will be in theaters soon.

The new trailer focuses mostly on Cobra’s nefarious plot to destroy the world by impersonating the President of the United States (could happen), as well as the remaining Joes and their effort to take back the country and avenge their fallen comrades. The ragtag crew includes The Rock, Bruce Willis, a hot chick, a Latino guy, and various ninjas. One of which is also a hot chick. I hope they succeed. They’re our last hope. Who else can defeat sword-wielding ninjas on a mountainside while the highest office hangs in the balance? Certainly not Dennis Quaid.

When adapting a project as nuanced and important as He-Man, you need someone who knows what they’re doing. You need a professional accustomed to making Alex Pettyfer not look ridiculous in fur underpants. Sony knows this, and it seems they’re not f&*^ing around.

The studio has approached G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu to helm their long-gestating Masters of the Universe film. I really do feel like he’s the perfect guy for the job. While the first G.I. Joe movie was brainless fun, Retaliation looks more believable and grounded. Or as believable and grounded as a movie about ninjas fighting on cliff faces can be. My point is, yes, hire that man. I’m ready for a gritty take on the world of Eternia. And to see Alexandra Breckinridge wear Teela’s golden ram-horned halter top. (THR)

Remarkably, I can save you some time by summing up this G.I. Joe: Retaliation teaser for you beyond what the trailer does. A Cliff’s Notes of the Cliff’s Notes if you will. In strict chronological order, the following occurs:

The Rock attributes a quote to Jay-Z.
Jay-Z raps (offscreen) the song that The Rock was quoting.
(Thousands of quick cuts of people stabbing, dancing, shooting, flying)
Bruce Willis appears.
Bruce Willis says, “Call me Joe.”

That’s it. That’s your trailer. If that sounds like something you’ll be interested in, the film hits theaters on June 29th.

Because there is absolutely nothing else to say about this trailer, I will spend the rest of this article listing G.I. Joe characters I remember from childhood, without the aid of any sources.

G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation continues to get wacky with its casting and it looks like they’ve snagged a pretty big get. Well, bigger than Marlon Wayans anyway. Bruce Willis is in talks to join the sequel as the Joe that started it all. Willis will play General Joe Colton, the man who forms the ultimat fighting force which is later known as G.I. Joe. Because it’s common for organizations to be named after their founders?

Jon M. Chu is directing from a script by it doesn’t matter as long as the action is cool, that will star Channing Tatum, The Rock, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson and RZA. There’s no word yet how this sequel will eschew the original cast to make room for the new recruits but let’s hope to hear one soon. Don’t G.I. Joe fans deserve continuity? (THR)
