In the unfortunate event that you feel the amoral narcissists from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia do a better job of living their lives than you do yours, you can get some help from them. In the form of a self-help book called, The 7 Secrets Of Awakening The Highly Effective Four-Hour Giant, Today.

The premise of the book is quite convoluted, as the book description seems to be as much about the gang writing the book as it is about the book itself. Maybe because the publisher is hip enough to realize that anyone who buys this book isn’t in it for the genuine advice these lunatics might want to give, but rather is just interested in watching them fumble their way through another endeavor.

Whichever side you find yourself on, you can dig into this meaty beast on January 6th, just in time to be brimming with holiday and New Year regret. In the meantime, you can pre-order the tome here.

God help you if it’s come to this.

The post ‘Fargo’ And ‘Louie’ Both Get Renewed By FX appeared first on Screen Junkies.

It was announced by FX this morning that the critically-acclaimed FX shows Louie and Fargo will be picked up for fifth and second seasons respectively. Fargo managed to get the network 18 Emmy nominations, which is the most in FX’s history, and Louie scored 5 nominations, including Best Comedy. And considering Louie looks like it costs about $7,200 per episode to make, it’s probably a good value to the network, even with a niche audience.

Fargo will be back with 10 episodes, and an entirely new cast and premise. No word on if it will still maintain its Fargo-ish setting, but I would hope so, otherwise they would call it Miami, or Denver, right?

Louie will be back in the spring after a LONG gap between seasons 3 and 4. However, the (relatively) relatively quick turnaround comes at a cost – the new season will consist of a scant 7 episodes.

I find this headline to be amusing because it means that Tracy Morgan is getting better, which makes me happy, but also because I don’t think of Morgan as “fairly” anything. I could imagine him in “excited,” “incredulous,” and “taking misguided offense” conditions, but not “fair” condition.

Whatever. Semantics. The big takeaway here is that Morgan is feeling better and isn’t in grave danger from his injuries anymore. Great news for fans of comedy and of people recovering from adversity. However, Morgan is still expected to reside in the hospital for a few more weeks, recovering from surgery from a broken leg, broken ribs, and a broken nose.

The news comes from his spokesperson, so there’s no reason to believe it’s speculation.

Continue getting better, Tracy. One day, you’ll make even this seem funny.

FX has not only announced a return date for Louie, but given us date that is only a couple months away. On May 5th, the fourth season of Louie will premiere. Exciting, no?

It also appears that FX is going in the opposite direction of that “break the season up into two seasons to really milk it” routine that AMC has been so fond of with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead. Rather, they’re giving us two thirty-minute episodes a week for seven weeks. If you ran to your calculator like I did after that last sentence, you’ll see we’re in for 14 new episodes.

What are we in for? No idea. But it will probably be really weird, intense, and not quite as funny ha-ha as we would expect from a stand-up comedian. And it will probably be really, really good.

After the show premiered to its smallest audience for any opener (2.84 million people), it has been announced by FX president Nick Grad that Justified will do a victory lap in season six, then disappear forever, like so many tattooed Kentucky villains.

Grad insists the decision was made irrespective of the lower audience numbers, but rather so that the show could complete a timely, enduring arc. I’m not sure that I believe him.

While the show’s numbers aren’t offensive, FX might be developing a higher performance standard for it shows, and might want to clear out a schedule slot for another show that they can incubate with their now-more-prestigious reputation.

But that aside, let the concern over the fates of Raylen Givens and Boyd Crowder begin now.

Justified will continue its habit of bringing in “big bads” for a season, only to have them shot, smothered, or trampled by a buffalo at or near the season finale. This season, it looks like the crown of the bad guys will be laid upon the large head of Michael Rapaport, who will play Dale Crowe, Dewey’s Floridian brother, will step into the role of a savvy criminal with a gator farm.

Yup. Sounds like Justified.

Does anyone want to be if the gators will be used for a nefarious purpose? I’m inclined to put my money on “yes.”

FX has announced they’re working on a follow-up to the book and film American Psycho, this time picking up on “hero” Patrick Bateman in his 50′s. Interesting. Wonder what kind of mid-life crisis sociopathic murderers go through.

In the pitch, Bateman would pick up a younger apprentice as part of some sick experiment on his part, which I guess would jack up the sex appeal beyond that of a middle-aged serial killer.

The premise sounds ridiculous, but then again, so was the premise that inspired it. Further, FX has gone a long way in the past few years, and though there may have been some missteps, they’ve proven with Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story, and Sons of Anarchy that they can dabble in camp about as well as anyone else can.

Ok. It will probably be the same, but FX is thinking this new channel change up could make things a tiny bit better. Go to Get FXX to figure out what channel FXX will be on in your area, with your cable provider. Do it now, because not only will the premieres of Sunny and The League hit like an atom bomb on September 4th, but you’ll get treated to a huge Parks and Recreation marathon the moment the channel comes on the air.

The post FX Getting After A ‘Last Of The Mohicans’ Series That We Would Definitely Watch appeared first on Screen Junkies.

FX knows what people like. And what people like are Daniel Day-Lewis films with a LOT of violence. No, I’m not talking about the Gangs of New York: The Animated Series! series that Martin Scorsese has been flirting with, but rather an adaptation of Michael Mann‘s 1992 film Last of the Mohicans, which stars Day-Lewis as a bad ass, back when Native Americans and colonists were duking it out for who gets what.

While the entire story may not have the happiest ending, that doesn’t mean FX is turned off. Rather, they plan on expanding the story Mann told by hiring the film’s co-writer Chris Crowe to pen the pilot script.

FX is labeling this a “limited series,” which I guess means that it won’t run in perpetuity until the end of days, and more specifically, will probably be more like HBO’s Rome in terms of duration, that is to say, developed with the end firmly in mind.

The film will be based on graphic novels of the beast which paint the MONSTER as endearingly human and vulnerable. So that’s where the similarities to Seth Rogen stop, apparently. Just kidding. JUST KIDDING. He’s likable in small-to-moderate doses.

Rogen will be teaming up with his writing partner Evan Goldberg and American Dad writer Matt McKenna, so…expect a comedy?

FX has announced that it’s developing a series around the professional and personal life of a stuntman who for some reason isn’t named Crash McCoy, but rather Doc Dixon (good, not great). It’s going to be one of those shows where he’s got a cuh-razy job during the day, then he comes home to a cuh-razy family, and everything is just overwhelming for this everyman, the Willy Loman of car crashes, if you will.

The series is titled Crash and Burn, so why they didn’t retrofit the show to feature TWO stuntmen, Dale Crash and Sawyer Burnside (“Burn,” if you will) is completely beyond me.

I realize that this article hasn’t divulged much about the show, but that’s the price I pay for making fun of cable-TV cliches and reveling in pun titles. The show will be produced by folks from The Walking Dead (good) and Necessary Roughness (zuh?).

No actor has been cast in the lead yet, but, fuck it, Tom Jane.

The post FX To Split Into Comedy And Drama Channels? appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Word on the streets of Tinseltown (ugh) is that FX is considering spinning its successful original programming into two different networks. FX would remain as the channel for your drama and more mature (pronounced “ma-tour”) viewers, whereas FXX would be created to accomodate those young drunken animals who like things like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League.

While the split is supposed to be along the lines of viewer age, rather than program content, it’s sounding like the drama stays on FX and the comedy goes to FXX, with dramedies like Wilfred and Louie being cut in half in an ill-advised attempt at fairness.

This change isn’t purported to be immediate, so if you’re crying and rocking back and forth thinking about the prospect of having to memorize a new station number, take a deep breath and enjoy these precious few moments before everything goes to shit.

In case you were wondering who an excellent counterpoint to Jessica Lange is, you can sleep easy knowing that person is Ian McShane. McShane, who’s best known for his work as the foul-mouthed and heartless Al Swearengen on HBO’s defunct Deadwood, will undoubtedly bring some brooding gravitas to Ryan Murphy‘s Halloween-y soap opera.

While American Horror Story isn’t a favorite show of this site, the hope, however unlikely, that McShane will call matron Jessica Lange a “cocksucker,” while indignantly tossing back whiskey, then storming out of the room is enough to make us mildly excited about this news.

But mostly it reminds us that we miss Al Swearengen.

Fans of Louie now know the deep pang that Tom Petty so eloquently captured in “The Waiting.”

FX has placed the well-received sitcom on hiatus until May of 2014. But before you fly into bouts of rage toward the network, know that they are only honoring Louis C.K.‘s wishes. The comedian has total autonomy over the show and feels he needs that time to preserve any quality. Especially now that Fake Louie Episodes has called him out so well. Says C.K.:

“The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories and it’s been great, but I want the show to keep getting better,” Louis C.K. said in a conference call with reporters today. “That’s my goal, and I don’t want it to be making the donuts, I want it to be something that comes from somewhere important and stays funny. It’s a luxury I asked for … season four is my job right now, but I’m going to take a whole lot of time to turn it in.

“I want season four to go somewhere new, even if it’s only a slight shift.”

Like having his character be slightly balder and doughier, for instance.

But still, 2014 is a long time from now. A really long time. So many things can happen and change in that time. We could outgrow the tone of the show. Or the economy could take a dive, changing how we watch television. I’m not a betting man, but I wouldn’t bet on seeing Doug Stanhope return to guest star. (Variety)

Sons of Anarchy has been giving us some pretty neat clips recently that give us background simultaneously into the lives of the characters and the actors playing them through their “Before the Anarchy” webisodes.

This go-round, we get privy to the goings on of Tig, one of the more colorful characters in a cast that is riddled with colorful characters. So drop on by, say hello, and try not to get your skull cracked in by this dude. Actually, don’t even say hello. That might just piss him off more.

After seven seasons and several twisted adventures, the cast of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia have decided to hang it up and move on. Or they were fired. Depends who you ask.

However, don’t worry about missing the loveable screw-ups at Paddy’s Pub. The original actors have all been replaced and we doubt you’ll even notice the difference. Haley Osment as Mac, Xzibit as Sweet Dee, Andrew Dice Clay as Frank, UFC Fighter Chael Sonnen as Dennis, and Candace Cameron as Charlie. Throw in Alan Tudyk as Rickety Cricket and we’re in business.

If you’re skeptical, then you’re probably in the right, as one would think that turning the acclaimed, quirky Coen brothers crime saga into a weekly show is not really all that possible. History is also on your side, as Edie Falco signed on in the Frances McDormand role in 2003, but the Fargo pilot never got picked up.

Nonetheless, FX is moving forward with the undertaking, having signed on writer and Executive Producer Noah Hawley, who didn’t find much success with his previous work, My Generation and The Unusuals.

However misguided this project appears to be, it’s always fun to guess which of the original cast will sign up for the TV show due to a lack of success since the film, a la Stacey Dash in Clueless. My money is on either Norm, Marge’s husband, or the chubby blonde whore. I would view the involvement of either one as a coup.

Did you know that Guillermo del Toro wrote a trilogy of vampire novels?

No, I’m not confusing him with Stephanie Meyer, who also wrote an assload of vampire novels. Del Toro had at it, and it looks like his works will hit the small screen with FX’s Strain, a look at the spreading of vampirism as a health epidemic, rather than lusty, pale romance.

In heartening news, del Toro will direct, write, and executive produce the pilot, and hopefully further episodes. Doubly heartening is the involvement of Lost‘s Carlton Cuse as showrunner for at least the pilot.

Somehow, someway, it’s vampire entertainment news that I don’t feel like mocking, let alone gouging my eyes out over.

Well played, Willy del Toro. Well played.

After exceeding the minimum ratings threshold that kicked in an automatic renewal, Anger Management, a show in which Charlie Sheen plays pretty much his Two and a Half Men character, only sans bowling shirts, has been picked up for a few more episodes.

90 episodes. Which means that it’s already guaranteed to hit the 100-episode milestone required for wide, painful syndication.

Yay?

To the “credit” of the show, and FX, it has quickly become the highest-rated sitcom on cable, surpassing like Workaholics, Always Sunny, Wilfred, and three others, so it’s probably performing as well as cable will allow it to. Still, it’s a Charlie Sheen TV adaptation of an Adam Sandler film.

Strange times, readers. Strange times.

We all got pretty excited or angry or sad or confused when it was announced that FX was filming a pilot based on Brian Michael Bendis‘s comic series Powers. We watched closely and commented as castings and shoot dates were announced, eager for the official word that the show would soon take over our airwaves. And then… nothing.

It went away as quickly as it came together. The pilot was actually filmed with Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, and Charles S. Dutton but FX head John Landgraf rejected the pilot without the news making a lot of noise. Today we find out that FX isn’t done trying to get this show together. In fact, they’re hoping to move forward by filming a completely new pilot with a brand new cast. Which means we might have ample opportunity to once again get excited or angry or sad or confused.

Anyway, why wouldn’t this show be delayed? It is based on Powers after all. (Variety)

Fans of the action-drama Justified on FX know that Raylan Givens is always getting into shootouts, in many of which he is completely justified in using lethal force. This clip might not give you a full sense of the justification, but there are plenty of bullets flying. Sound like your kind of thing? Then check out the latest episode, which airs Tuesday, March 13 at 10:00 PM ET/PT on FX.

The easiest way to say it is this: Backcountry America is extremely hot right now. Winter’s Bone created “buzz” for the Ozarks two years ago, but FX’s good guys/bad guys saga Justified put Appalachia over the edge. Just like in 1999, when America was obsessed with Ricky Martin, George Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, and, to a lesser extent, George Lopez, people can’t get enough of wood-burning stoves, zero-income households, and squirrel stew.

This is, of course, a gross oversimplization. The works I cite above have done very well at shedding light on areas and cultures that have been written off by most every outsider, both in the media and in day-to-day life. However, with a program as engaging as Justified, we’re treated to a look at an insular culture that doesn’t come across as cartoonish in the fashion that Bon Temps, the Louisiana setting of True Blood, does.

So, as a fan of Justified, but someone woefully ignorant of what exactly Kentucky culture entails, I have to say I’ve been privy to an education in what exactly goes on there.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

No One Will Ever Judge You For Drinking, Regardless Of The Circumstances

Driving to pick up your kids? That’s cool. U.S. Marshal going to transport a dangerous interstate rapist? Perfect. Here’s some coffee with “a kick.”

In the world of Justified, everyone is always drinking bourbon, and there’s never a bad time to ask for it. I’m a BIG fan of bourbon (read: alcoholic), so this is terrific news to me. It seems that every home and office is so stocked with booze, that the notion of “going out drinking” seems pretty foreign in the town of Harlan. It would be like going to a designated place to breath or poop. It’s such a familiar activity that making an event out of it seems silly. Sure, there are bars, but it’s become my understanding that the bars are pretty much just where criminals go to meet each other while, yes, drinking bourbon.

This doesn’t just apply to lower classes or the seedy underbelly. The bourgeoisie and upper crust take just the same approach as well. As does law enforcement. Marshals Raylan, Art, and Tim all seem to fabricate excuses to drink. When Raylan turns over his weapon to boss Art as evidence in a shootout, Tim Gutterson steps into the room to add, “Relinquishing a firearm can be a very emotional moment, and there always must be another deputy in attendance. Add in some premium alcohol, what could possibly go wrong?”

With that, they raise their glasses to the successful relinquishment of a weapon. And that seems to be how Kentucky operates in regards to the omnipresence of alcohol.

Midway through its third season, Justified has been renewed for a fourth, FX has announced. The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as ratings for the show continue to climb, with this season’s viewership up 8% over last year’s. The show has proven a solid performer for the male-skewing network that has recently been trading on fare like Always Sunny, Sons of Anarchy, and until recently, Rescue Me.

No word yet on when the season starts shooting or airing, but with the season three finale not happening until April 10, one can bet that it will be no sooner than November or December of this year.

Justified has proven itself to be a fun, straightforward show that balances out serial and procedural elements that are buoyed tremendously by both rich writing and strong character performances, as Margo Martindale’s recent Emmy grab would indicate.
