After some time on Fox, time spent in Adult Swim rerun purgatory, some DVD movies, and then a whole slew more new episodes on Comedy Central (52, precisely), it looks like the plug will be pulled on Futurama after the end of this season, number seven.

While its reincarnation hasn’t made many waves outside the scope of the original fanbase, that rabid fanbase was good enough for a huge second time around for the show, which managed to keep much of its production and voice cast intact despite the obvious lag between iterations.

It’s all over now. At least, until someone else sees Futurama as an opportunity to capture a market segment that’s eluded them until now. NBC, that’s your cue to do something reckless and crazy.

GO!

We get it, Futurama. You have very devoted fans. In anticipation of the new season of the sci-fi animated series from Matt Groening, Comedy Central put together some very industrious, now-unemployed folks to put together a “real life” version of Futurama‘s opening title sequence.

It’s pretty damn impressive, especially the way they created most of the graphics, possibly by harnessing deep-seated construction paper-cutting skills that they have laid dormant for decades.

It’s shortened from the original animated length (BOOOOOOO!), but the intent is still clear, so points to Comedy Central for giving me yet another “Huh. That’s pretty neat” moment today.

Saturday’s schedule for Comic-Con 2011 is posted and ready to be highlighted (here are Thursday and Friday). The convention is quite heavy on the TV side this year, but I’m not complaining. Television seems to be kicking the ass of movies lately, as far as entertainment value is concerned.
Five out of five Dr. Zoidbergs agree.

Bad news, no one! “Futurama” has been picked up for another “season.” I put season in quotes because Comedy Central’s idea of seasons don’t really correspond to anyone else’s. Or logic for that matter. The 26-episode re-up is actually two seasons, but CC must get off on being withholding, as they’re only giving Groening and crew license to say one season. Bastards.

Since its return two years ago, “Futurama” has put up some solid numbers, and its rabid following has also grown thanks to social media campaigns. While the “Futurama” movies had been released to mixed reviews prior to its TV return, the show seems to have been able to recreate it magic of old via the episodic format.

Citing a desire to create “cross-platform synergies” throughout its programming schedule, the renewal is predicated on the addition of a character named “Daniel Tosh” who, in successive 30-second bumpers before and after commercial breaks, will sit the cartoon down and quickly rehash some of the week’s best viral videos.

Nothing in that last paragraph is at all true, but it seemed unsettlingly believable, didn’t it? Watch your backs, viewers. (Deadline)

According to Katie Segal (Leela), Comedy Central is funding the continued adventures of Fry, Leela, Bender and Earth's most unqualified crab-man doctor for another season.

The Harlem Globetrotters are solving celebratory math equations tonight, in honor of the much deserved eighth season pick-up of “Futurama“ from Comedy Central. The “Futurama” relaunch got off to a rocky start with the black holes that were the DVD movies, but the 6th season scored strong ratings and just got better and better. Now I’m a full supporter of proposition infinity, and I wonder if any of those crazy Japanese robots that pop up on the YouTube are currently on OkCupid.

According to a recent interview with actor Katie Segal (Leela), Comedy Central is funding the continued adventures of Fry, Leela, Bender and Earth’s most unqualified crab-man doctor for another season. The 13 episodes of season seven begin airing this summer, but Comedy Central’s not waiting for those episodes’ reception before green-lighting more. Awesome. It’s time to do a very impressive limbo dance.

Nice going, Comedy Central. This almost makes up for Krod Mandoon. Almost. (Vulture via AICN)
