<description><![CDATA[You are most definitely NOT the boss of them. ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the world where it is today, we all know in our heart of hearts that it&#8217;s a matter of time (minutes, probably) before we’re forced to send our children to fight in war against some <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/films/unknown' class='linkify' target='_blank'>unknown</a> enemy. Don’t have kids? That’s even worse, because that means YOU will have to do the fighting. Bet you wish you had kids now, no?</p>
<p>No worries. If you don’t have any kids, I’m sure you could pay these lil’ rascals to fight your wars for you.</p>
<p>You coward.</p>
<p>In honor of the release of <em>Red Dawn</em> on November 21st, here are our six favorite child soldiers from film and television.</p>
<h4>Dia – <em>Blood Diamond</em></h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QRWve1dr2JI" frameborder="0" width="420" height="315"></iframe></p>
<p>As we’ll see, child soldiers are much more a hallmark of less legitimate military forces, often siding with warlords and cartels, rather than state-run armies and forces. Perhaps the most notable example is Dia, who plays the son of Djimon Hounsou’s character in Blood Diamond, a fictionalization of accounts from war-torn Sierra Leone.</p>
<p>The heartbreaking result is a child so brainwashed by his captors/army that he forgets his allegiance and relationship with his father. The outcome is positive, but not without a whole hell of a lot of tension and drama on both ends of the father-son relationship.</p>
<h4>Young Mr. Eko – <em>Lost</em></h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EBfA9fgdsGY" frameborder="0" width="560" height="315"></iframe></p>
<p>In a backstory similar to that of Dia in <em>Blood Diamond</em>, we find out Mr. Eko’s origin as a warlord in <em>Lost</em> as he does the big brotherly thing and steps in for his younger sibling. Here too, we are forced to draw the line between “soldier” and “thug,” but it’s clear enough that if you’re going into battle, legitimate or otherwise, you’d probably want Young Mr. Eko on your side.</p>
<p>I mean, look at him!</p>
<h4>Jed – <em>Red Dawn</em> (1984)</h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bUNjqn4sc14" frameborder="0" width="560" height="315"></iframe></p>
<p>I understand that including a 1984 Patrick Swayze character is stretching the definition of the word “child,” but this isn’t a deep well to draw from, so I’ll take the boy who quickly elevates to “man” status after the Russians come into the sleepy mountain town.</p>
<p>Jed proves to be something of a badass leader of Red Dawn’s Wolverines, doing most of the heavy lifting in terms of strategy, procurement, hunting, and camping. Without Jed, the Wolverines probably still would have existed, but with a lot less efficacy.</p>
<h4>Joan of Arc – <em>Messenger</em></h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6gv2p2WZoUE" frameborder="0" width="560" height="315"></iframe></p>
<p><a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/luc-besson-731/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Luc Besson</a> didn’t pull any punches when he crafted this depiction of Joan of Arc. Rather than show her in a hazy, soft-focus Barbera Walters-light, ole’ Luc gave Joan the <em>Braveheart</em> treatment from beginning to end, offering her as a truly divine weapon of her countrymen against the barbaric English.</p>
<p>Things don’t turn out so great for Joan, but she’s able to leave a trail of death and destruction before her demise, her young age making her feats all the more impressive. Getting bested by a <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/teenage/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>teenage</a> girl, especially if you’re a 15th century soldier, is pretty humiliating, but when the foe at hand is this badass played by <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/milla-jovovich-292/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Milla Jovovich</a>, it’s pretty understandable.</p>
<h4>Sniper Girl – <em>Full Metal Jacket</em></h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/l9mET2oDRBI" frameborder="0" width="560" height="315"></iframe></p>
<p>On a list of children being co-opted for paramilitary uses, it’s a little hard to distinguish between the good guys and the bad guys. And while a civilian Viet Cong sniper doesn&#8217;t fall under many people’s idea of “good guys,” when you see who the invisible enemy is, it’s hard not to take a step back and just hate everyone at that moment.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most heart-wrenching scene on this list falls when the U.S. <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/marines/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Marines</a> come across their enemy in an abandoned building and forced to determine where they go from there. We never learn her name, or anything about her, other than the fact that when children are involved in these war games, it’s a little murkier than it would be with grown-up soldiers.</p>
<h4>The Toy Soldiers Kids – <em>Toy Soldiers</em></h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/x1b7Q0gmR-Y" frameborder="0" width="420" height="315"></iframe></p>
<p>If you tell me that you never daydreamed during class, wondering what course of action your sixth-grade self would take should terrorists take over your school (And why wouldn&#8217;t you, your school SUCKS!) then you are a damn liar and don’t deserve this list.</p>
<p>They’re not soldiers in the truest sense, but a whole gaggle of prep school kids sure do manage to raise hell for the violent intruders who attempt to impose their will on a bunch of tweens. Who do they think they are, parents or something?</p>

<description><![CDATA[It's just kids being kids. Then it's kids psychologically scarring kids. Then kids killing kids. ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>That time-honored tradition of <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/college/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>college</a> hazing is back in the news, as the director of Florida A&amp;M’s band (yup, bands haze) has been <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/fired-472/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>fired</a> after one of the band members died in an incident that is thought to be <a href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/genres-movies/cult-films/dazed-and-confused-quotes/" target="_blank">hazing</a> related. Details about the death aren’t yet known, other than the 26 year-old band member was complaining about not being able to breathe on the bus after a game, then vomited and passed out.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/gatsby-casts-newbie-elizabeth-debicki-tobey-prepares-hazing-ritual/" target="_blank">Hazing</a> has been depicted in films throughout the years, most often in movies about college life or the military. And while sometimes it does cost the involved <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/parties/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>parties</a> their lives (indirectly), nothing depicted on this list ever caused a death (save for <em>A Few Good Men</em>).</p>
<p>See for yourself.</p>
<h4><em>Full Metal Jacket</em></h4>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OCLN4_57i-o" frameborder="0" width="480" height="<a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/360-845/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>360</a>&#8220;></iframe></p>
<p>Poor Private Pyle. He just can’t seem to catch <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/films/break' target='_blank'>break</a>. And even though the group initially bands together to help Leonard out, by the end of the first half of <em>Full Metal Jacket</em>, they realize that it’s up to them to whip his ass into shape if they don’t want to be running and exercising in the rain while he sits on his cookie dough ass eating jelly donuts.</p>
<p>The most prominent instance of hazing comes in the middle of the night when the recruits decide to teach him a lesson by beating him with bars of soap wrapped in towels (I’ve also heard pillowcases work quite nicely). He cries, but rather than setting him straight, the hazing just pushes him closer to his breaking point. Weird. That really could have gone either way.</p>
<h4><em>Old School</em></h4>
<p><object style="display: block; overflow: hidden;" width="560" height="304" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="src" value="http://static.movieclips.com/embedplayer.swf?config=http://config.movieclips.com/player/config/embed/hXNa/%3Floc%3DUS&amp;endpoint=http://movieclips.com/api/v1/player/test/action/&amp;start=0&amp;v=1.0.15" /><embed style="display: block; overflow: hidden;" width="560" height="304" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://static.movieclips.com/embedplayer.swf?config=http://config.movieclips.com/player/config/embed/hXNa/%3Floc%3DUS&amp;endpoint=http://movieclips.com/api/v1/player/test/action/&amp;start=0&amp;v=1.0.15" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p>After getting kidnapped by some gentlemen in a molester van, the pledges from <em>Old School</em> engage in some trust exercises, but not before they get screamed at by <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/will-ferrell-199/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Will Ferrell</a> and reassured that at least one of them is, in fact, his boy. To demonstrate the trust, they tie bricks to their wangs and toss the bricks off the roof of a building. All the bricks hit the ground safely and without incident, but Weensie’s passes through a manhole cover, presumably ripping off his weenus, but only after pulling him to the ground, which probably should have killed him.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Sure Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis can give us some pointers when it comes having friends with benefits, but, like the rest of us civilians we're pretty sure that dating a marine is a mystery to them. ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It seems like everyone these days is dating a US Marine, and we think that this is a great thing.  <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/mila-kunis-406/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Mila Kunis</a>, <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/justin-timberlake-590/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Justin Timberlake</a> are leading the way, and just yesterday we read a <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/twitter-335/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>twitter</a> report about Jessica Rabbit canoodling with &#8216;Chesty&#8217; the bulldog mascot of the Corps.   Justin and Mila can give us some pointers when it comes having <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/films/friends-with-benefits' target='_blank'>friends with benefits</a>, but, like the rest of us civilians we&#8217;re pretty sure that dating a marine is a mystery to them.  In fact we are pretty sure they are  searching madly for a &#8216;movie guide to dating a marine&#8217; to prep them for the Marine Corps Ball in November. After all, if movies have taught us anything it&#8217;s that you can learn just about <em>everything</em> in 120 minutes, including what it takes to woo one of the few and proud.</p>
<p>The following are a few films you might want to consider watching to learn more about dating a Marine.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Heaven Knows Mr. Allison </strong></p>
<div id="attachment_220515" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a rel="attachment wp-att-220515" href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/movie-guide-to-dating-a-marine/attachment/heaven_knows_mr_allison/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-220515" title="heaven_knows_mr_allison" src="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/heaven_knows_mr_allison-300x167.jpg" alt='' width="300" height="167" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Mr. Allison shipwrecked with a nun</p></div>
<p>Mr. Big Skies (AKA John Huston) himself directs Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum in this 1957 classic. Mitchum finds himself shipwrecked on an island in the South Pacific after his marine recon team gets ditched by a nava <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/films/submarine' target='_blank'>submarine</a> during an enemy attack. Lucky for him he&#8217;s not marooned alone, finding a beautiful nun who was also abandoned during an evacuation to share the island with. Do we see love on the horizon along with an approaching Japanese ship? Take a guess what happens next. Dating tip to take away from this oldie but goodie—don&#8217;t except a marine to make the first move, unless they&#8217;re drunk on sake.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Born of the Fourth of July </strong></p>
<div id="attachment_220531" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a rel="attachment wp-att-220531" href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/movie-guide-to-dating-a-marine/attachment/born_on_the_fourth_of_july/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-220531" title="Born_on_the_Fourth_of_July" src="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Born_on_the_Fourth_of_July-300x198.jpg" alt='' width="300" height="198" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tom Cruise dancing in Born On The Fourth Of July</p></div>
<p>Tom Cruise definitely has some 0n-screen experience when it comes to the marines. Defending them as a Naval lawyer in <em>A Few Good Men</em>, but not before playing one in <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/oliver-stone-539/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Oliver Stone</a>&#8216;s second film about the <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/vietnam-war/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Vietnam War</a>. In <em>Born On The Fourth Of July</em>, Cruise plays real-life marine Ron Kovic, who enlists in the service as soon as he&#8217;s eighteen and gets shipped out the day after his senior <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/prom/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>prom</a>. Kovic&#8217;s horrific experience in Vietnam leaves him wheelchair-bound and disillusioned with America and its war machine; he then devotes his life to anti-war activism. A few things to note: marines often declare their feelings less that <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/shows/24' target='_blank'>24</a> hours before deploying to a dangerous, war-ridden foreign country (but not before getting in a last dance), and, big surprise, they might have some issues after coming back.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Full Metal Jacket</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_220534" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a rel="attachment wp-att-220534" href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/movie-guide-to-dating-a-marine/attachment/full_metal_jacket/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-220534" title="full_metal_jacket" src="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/full_metal_jacket-300x240.jpg" alt='' width="300" height="240" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text"><a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/full-metal-jacket-415/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Full Metal Jacket</a> &quot;Me Love You Long Time&quot;</p></div>
<p><a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/stanley-kubrick-705/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Stanley Kubrick</a>&#8216;s take on Nam, <em>Full Metal Jacket</em> is full of useful info about the life of a marine—from the degradation of basic training, <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/platoon/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>platoon</a> hazings involving bars of soap and what type of sexual propositions a marine is used to. Just to recap, <em>Full Metal Jacket</em> follows a platoon from basic through their stationing in Vietnam, and like just about all movies about Vietnam, is highly anti-war at its core. However, this is beside the point for our purposes. What you need to take away is this: you better be prepared to love them long time.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Jarhead</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_220547" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a rel="attachment wp-att-220547" href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/movie-guide-to-dating-a-marine/attachment/jarhead/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-220547" title="jarhead" src="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jarhead-300x199.jpg" alt='' width="300" height="199" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text"><a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/jake-gyllenhaal-115/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>Jake Gyllenhaal</a> reading in Jarhead</p></div>
<p>Another true story, <em>Jarhead</em> focuses on Operation Desert Storm, following Anthony Swofford as a marine in the Persian Gulf. Among the many things to worry about during war, most of the platoon is worried about their ladies back home being <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/unfaithful/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>unfaithful</a> to them while they are so far away for so long. Unfortunately, this proves to be true in many instances, even for our leading man. Upon returning home, he finds his long time girlfriend with a new boyfriend. The moral is: marines can be paranoid, but sometimes it&#8217; <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/shows/justified' target='_blank'>justified</a>. If you&#8217;re going to date one, you better be faithful. And if you can&#8217;t be, take a cue from Brian Dettman&#8217;s ex by rallying a neighbor to make a homemade <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/porno-23/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>porno</a> with you and sending it on an unassuming VHS copy of <em>The Deer Hunter</em>. It&#8217;s a classy move.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Flags of our Fathers</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_220548" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a rel="attachment wp-att-220548" href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/movie-guide-to-dating-a-marine/attachment/flagsofourfathers/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-220548" title="flagsofourfathers" src="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/flagsofourfathers-300x239.jpg" alt='' width="300" height="239" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Holding up the flag in Flags Of Our Fathers</p></div>
<p>We&#8217;ve all seen the iconic photograph of the marines holding up Old Glory during the fiercest battle in Iwo Jima in  <a href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/tag/wwii/' class='linkify' target='_blank'>WWII</a>. <em>Flags Of Our Fathers </em>tells the story of the story of the three men who held the flag and survived, the heroism the country bestowed on them and how undeserving they felt of all the attention in the end. Word to the wise, when it comes to dating a hero, remember that survivors guilt can be a bitch.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>The Great Santini</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div id="attachment_220555" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 410px"><a rel="attachment wp-att-220555" href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/movie-guide-to-dating-a-marine/attachment/date-a-marine/"><img class="size-full wp-image-220555" title="date a marine" src="http://cdn2.screenjunkies.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/date-a-marine.gif" alt='' width="400" height="301" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Blythe Danner shows Mila how to date a Marine</p></div>
<p>The Great Santini reminds us that despite our attempt to write this as a humorous article,<em><strong> the sacrifices that both Marines in Uniform, and their families make are no joke</strong></em>.  This film depicts the disconnect between a Marine Aviator (pilot for you landlubbers) who runs his family like a military unit, and his family who just want to be loved unconditionally.  It is not just returning combat veterans that deal with PTSD, but unfortunately their entire family must deal with this as well.</p>
<p>We are incredibly proud of the men and women who serve in our armed forces, and would like to suggest to our readers that if they liked this article then they should visit the <a href="http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Wounded Warrior Project</a>, because the worst thing we can do is to forget about the sacrifices that have been made for freedom.</p>

<description><![CDATA[ Like everyone else in America, I&#039;ve always had to endure the boastful claims of the state of Texas. From the &#34;Don&#039;t Mess with Texas&#34; slogan to awful Dallas Cowboys fans to the &#34;Steers and Queers&#34; line in Full Metal Jacket, Texans always seem to walk around like their poo-poos don&#039;t stink. Well guess what, Tex; you&#039;re not so tough after all! Cinemark has pulled the trailer for Paramount&#039;s &#34;Paranormal Activity 2&#34; from several theaters in Texas after receiving numerous complaints that the promo was &#34;too&#34; frightening. Well look at the scared little state of Texas pissing itself in the corner over a cheesy horror movie trailer. Pathetic. Why don&#039;t you run home to your &#34;Friday Night Lights&#34; and your &#34;Austin City Limits,&#34; ya pansies! (Variety)
