Are his abs up to the challenge?

Since breaking out in Animal Kingdom, Joel Edgerton is quickly establishing himself as the less violent option to Russell Crowe. The star of the recent The Thing is now in talks for another prequel. He’s up for the part of Themosticles in 300: Battle of Artemisia, the general who led the Greeks in battle against the Persians in 480 BC.

The action takes place ten years before Gerard Butler airbrushed his abs in defense of Sparta, and spans the decade long battle. Seems odd that they would cast an Australian to play Greek. This is the break-out role Zach Galifianakis has been waiting for.

7 photosEliza Dushku

Warner Bros has released this trailer for Batman: Year One so that we’re all very clear that Bruce Wayne‘s parents were murdered and years later he saw a bat and that prompted him to karate chop brick piles and become Batman. We’re all good on those facts now, right?

Adapted from Frank Miller‘s classic graphic novel (which served as an influence to Nolan’s Batman), the animated film follows Bruce Wayne through his first year as Batman, back when he was still super-pissed about the whole murder of his parents thing. The O.C.‘s Ben McKenzie stars as Batman (naturally) with Bryan Cranston as Jim Gordon, Katee Sackhoff as Sarah Essen, and Eliza Dushku as Catwoman. Because everyone knows that Catwoman has a wicked Boston accent.

Taking a cue from Marvel and Universal’s Hulk redo in 2008, after the disappointing 2003 Ang Lee version, Fox is trying again with Daredevil. Ben Affleck‘s less-than-beloved 2003 take on the blind lawyer superhero will not be the last. I’m sure the studio is feeling the super-power of franchise re-tinkering, after the successful open of X-Men: First Class, and they don’t want those movie rights leaping back to Marvelville.

The upcoming, animated 'Batman: Year One' has a cast. Here's who will get paid a bundle for a few hours in a voice record booth...

Even though the source material for Batman is comics, the live action Batman movies always overshadow the animated ones. I guess that’s because the live action films have bigger budgets, bigger stars, are released in theaters and are seen by more than just comic book nerds. Still… we all loved “Batman: The Animated Series,” right? Let’s show some respect.

The upcoming Batman: Year One, based on the classic Frank Miller comic of the same name, has a voice cast. Ben McKenzie will play the toon battective, Bryan Cranston will voice Pre-Commissioner Lieutenant James Gordon, Katee Sackhoff is set to play Gordon’s best gal Detective Sarah Essen, and Eliza Dushku won’t have to wear a skintight catsuit to voice Catwoman – though, you know, she probably should anyway. Warner Bros Animation is looking to unleash The Bat at this year’s Comic-Con.

Lauren Montgomery and Sam Liu are directing a script by Tab Murphy. (Hollywood Reporter)

In the future, everyone will be Batman for 15 minutes.

Frank Miller’s comic The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most important works in the canon of American Batman Literature. So it makes sense that there would eventually be a movie based on it, since movies are big, and Batman is big, and movies about Batman are big. No-brainer! The folks at Warner Brothers seem to agree, since they’ve reportedly begun work on an animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. It would follow Miller’s prequel to the Batman story, Year One, which is already in development. Those two would make an interesting “alpha and omega” look at the Batman story, if you want to get pretentious about it.

I guess this means my fantasized live-action Dark Knight Returns starring a grizzled Bruce Willis as Batman isn’t going to happen any time soon. Too bad, because it would have been awesome. Think about it, I’m right. Maybe they can get Willis to do the voice? (Bleeding Cool)

Zack Snyder has finally agreed to make a sequel to 300. He was always hesitant to commit until he saw how Frank Miller's Xerxes comic turned out. If it wasn't awesome and didn't loan itself to unnecessary slow-motion, then it wasn't going to happen. Luckily for ab-crunching actors everywhere, Miller's comic made the grade. Snyder tells the LA Times what we can expect from the sequel:
"This movie follows Themistocles and the Battle of Artemisium, which coincidentally happens on the exact same three days as the Battle of Thermopylae [which was the basis of '300']," Snyder said. "This one starts off with a quick retelling of the why of the Persian wars. It starts off at the Battle of Marathon and then it goes back to Themistocles finding out that Persians are invading again. and off we go over to learn a little bit about why Xerxes is the way he is."
I'd always assumed he was that way because of a handsy uncle.
