To all the people who were waiting until the first trailer to get all up in arms about the CGI treatment taking over your beloved Charlie Brown…your time has come. The first trailer for Peanuts movie is here, and it’s…pretty good.

The CGI appears to be soft enough that it doesn’t look edgy or high tech. The opening scene conveys a holiday sweetness, and we get the big Charlie Brown reveal at the end of the clip. Nothing terribly offensive here, in my opinion, but I discovered a long time ago that my opinion may differ hugely from others’.

To all the haters, there’s no Twitter references, no Katy Perry/Imagine Dragons reimagining of “Linus and Lucy,” or anything like that. Though now that I think about it, the adults’ voices do have a certain dubstep quality to them. Maybe Skrillex can voice the adults.

That will speak to the tweens more than a morose pre-teen with elephantiasis of the head.

TV execs, for one reason or another, have been really hurting themselves since The Hangover to get Rob Riggle his own show. He doesn’t seem to be a very strong candidate in that he’s not particularly likable, and his schtick, screaming at people, might get old after about 100 episodes.

Nonetheless, Fox is taking another crack at it with a take on Austria’s Braunschlag.

The show will follow a small town and its mayor (Riggle) as the town becomes insolvent and he attempts to save the town. It comes from Steve Hely, an alum of 30 Rock and The Office, so that’s promising.

They couldn’t have gotten Tracy Morgan to be the mayor? And every other character? That would be something I’d watch.

Anyway, the new show doesn’t have a name, but it’s a safe bet they’ll steer away from Braunschlag.

Rainn Wilson has been more or less quiet since walking away from the role of Dwight, killing all those spinoff rumors. But now he’s back. And, thanks to the braintrust behind Bones, he’s playing a pretty cliche character in Backstrom. Yay!

He’s genius detective who drinks, smokes, and plays by his own rules! Just like every other detective on TV these days. However, this is Rainn Wilson, and Rainn Wilson is funnier than most of the other actors on TV, so hopefully, this can outperform what it is on paper and really do him some justice.

But, judging by the trailer…maybe not?

Considering how much public school standards have dropped, I’m very comfortable saying that even more American will be able to answer “yes” when FOX asks them, once again, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Jeff Foxworthy, the host who took a break from inquiring about your redneck status to inquire about your academic background in the first installment of the show, is back again. Cause Foxworthy gotta eat, too.

The show first ran on FOX from 2007-2009, then a couple more years in syndication. Why is it really coming back? No idea. The game show phenomenon is even more dead than it was when the show first premiered, and FOX has never really positioned itself as one of the more family-oriented networks.

However, reality TV and gameshows are cheap, and rather than picking something expensive that no one was watching (Utopia), they might as well do it with something cheap.

Baron Davis might be just short of a household name for most of America. He was never one of the best players in the league, but he was close to that tier, having garnered several All-Star selections. He also was a prominent entertainer and noted movie buff, having even written film reviews for NBA.com.

Now that Davis is done with the NBA, it’s no surprise that he’s eying TV. Or TV is eying him. In any event, Fox will be shooting a pilot on a show based somewhat on the player’s life. Davis will not star in the show, mostly because he’s not an actor, but will play a hand in storylines and concepting.

And New Girl‘s Jake Johnson will be producing it.

To give you an idea of the type of guy Baron Davis is, and why this might not be too bad, here’s a video of him and Steve Nash, just kickin’ it:

If you thought that most of the remakes and adaptations we’ve been prattling on about sound pretty uninspired…you’re right. They do. However, we’ve got one that seems really inspired. Maybe TOO inspired. It seems that the guy behind Flash and Green Arrow, Greg Berlanti, will be getting the gang from Archie together to explore their feelings and whatnot in the hour-long drama Riverdale.

The hour-long drama ratchets up the conflict as it places the gang in the fictional small town of Riverdale, New York and focuses on the love triangle between Archie, Veronica, and Betty.

Without knowing much about this, it’s sounding a lot like Dawson’s Creek. And I think it’s pretty weird that an adaptation of an Archie comic would turn into an episode of Dawson’s Creek. Maybe they’ll give it more grit and get Bret Easton Ellis to write a few episodes in which they all go on a bender and wreck Mercedes.

You won’t find THAT in the comic. I assume.

You want MORE random film-to-TV adaptations this season? You’re a weird person, but ok. Word from Fox (via Deadline) is that they’re using the 2006 film Hitch as the “inspiration” for a half-hour single-camera comedy series that will likely be jiggier than anything currently on the air.

The series will come from Will Smith’s production shop Overbrook Entertainment, and will, as of press time, not feature any of his children, nor his wife.*

The series will not star Smith or Kevin James, and the premise of “a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics” doesn’t sound too similar to the film, so this might be an instance similar to the befuddling Bachelor Party announcement in that it shares a name with a film, but perhaps doesn’t draw much more than its name from the source material.

For those keeping score at home, the reboot scorecard is looking something like this for TV:

Rush Hour, Big, Monster-In-Law, Marley & Me, Minority Report, Real Genius, Problem Child, Bachelor Party, In Good Company, Sniper, and The Illusionist. Yikes.

*This will likely be outdated information by the time you read it.

Mulaney was lauded by many to be the lone beacon of hope and humor aid the annual parade of network sitcom crap. Comedian John Mulaney has a rabid and deserved following, and the cast (Nasim Pedrad, Elliot Gould, Martin Short) was an A-team of talent.

HOWEVER…it’s been three episodes, and (speaking as HUGE fan of John Mulaney) the show is terrible (We said so here.). And while fans hold out hope, the general public isn’t so patient and generally has its mind made up a month into a show’s run. Since these horrible episodes have gotten horrible ratings, Fox, which had originally ordered 16 episodes, today trimmed the order down to 13, which doesn’t sound that bad, until you realize that the show had already shot 13 episodes. So basically, the network has said, “No more filming on Mulaney.”

I hope the show gets better, and critics say it does, but it won’t be long before any improvement will be too late.

So, with Parks and Rec not coming back until 2015, Billy’s got some bandwidth. And he’ll use that bandwidth to play an irate airline employee on New Girl. Yup. That makes perfect sense. Actually I think Eichner may have modeled his act after airline employees.

No word on when the episode airs, but expect it to be a little further into the season, given that he was probably shooting Parks and Rec when the earlier episodes shot. Just a guess.

And to drive the point home, they’ve unleashed a trailer (via Vulture) that STRONGLY suggests a 1980′s-themed musical from our main man, Gene.

Bob’s, in classic cartoon fashion, has embraced musical pieces as a cornerstone of its premise. And it works out well, even when Linda is singing in shrill, tone-deaf, keyless shrieks. Actually, it works best that way.

With everyone in agreement that the first episode of Gotham was pretty good, the show is now confidently previewing what we can expect to see this season. Several villains as it were.

The most notable in this preview is Victor Zsasz, the serial killer who carves a line in his skin for each of his victims. By the time he meets Batman, his skin is covered in scars. In this prequel, he still has ample room and many victims to claim. We also get a mysterious look at a hooded villain that could be the Scarecrow or the Dollmaker. Plus, a guy in a pig mask. Gotham is weird.

The Simpsons has built up a lot of steam in the offseason. Their FX marathon was an unequivocal success, last season’s LEGO episode got great ratings, as did last night’s Family Guy episode with the gang. And they built up further buzz by killing off a character. Of course, they didn’t say who, so you had to tune in.

We haven’t tuned in…yet, but we know who died, thanks to Deadline. don’t read if you don’t wanna know…

The death was:

Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, Krusty’s father. Ugh. That wouldn’t be newsworthy under the best of circumstances. I think most of us figured he was dead. I was hoping for Nelson Muntz or Superintendent Chalmers. But a boy can dream, can’t he?

Krusty himself was in the title of the show, but rest assured, the clown is still alive and well, even though his death would likely have made for a more interesting conversation the day after the episode aired.

Normally, $32.5 million in an opening weekend isn’t a huge deal, but the fact that it’s in the dog days of summer, and Maze Runner has clear franchise potential, led Fox to go ahead and grant it a sequel based on that performance. Overall, it made $81.5 million globally, but it also probably sold books, and t-shirts, and water bottles or something, so Fox is probably considering more than just the box office take.

The film has actually done pretty well critically; so it’s nice when the business of films and the art align themselves.

We don’t have any word on plot or cast because, Christ, it’s been three days, but most of the time studios just want you to recreate the original, but, you know, better.

Jean stated that rumors of ratings troubles are perennial and not to be taken seriously. He offered this assessment:

Every fall, we are after football and our ratings are great, and then in the spring, when football is over, it looks like a drought. Nonetheless, our ads are in the top 5 of all networks, we’re huge in M18-34, and we rerun really well.

He says in the piece (which is definitely worth a read for both fans and the curious alike) that no formal conversations have taken place about the end of the show. And you know what?

I guess, for the purposes of this film, sports networks have fantasy football departments. Huh.

Deadline is reporting that the project is based on Matthew Berry, an ESPN expert who has gotten to live just such a life. Double huh. So I guess that premise isn’t too far removed from reality. Fox, clearly going through a sci-fi phase that we should just let pass, has announced it’s ordered a pilot for a series that will serve as a sequel to Minority Report, the Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg film based on the book by Philip K. Dick. While it’s just a pilot, odds are this thing will get picked up, as Fox bought the pilot with something called a “put-pilot order” which means if they don’t make it a show, they owe some people a huge amount of money.

The show will take place ten years after the pre-cog program is terminated, and one of the former precogs join a detective who is “haunted by her past.” Hey, we’re all haunted by our pasts, lady. We just don’t make a big deal about it.

The NFL made it clear yesterday that they will in no way support (videotaped) spousal abuse. While covering the leak of the infamous elevator punch video that got Ray Rice fired from the Baltimore Ravens, Fox & Friends co-hosts Brian Kilmeade and Steve Doocy where inspired to share some funny domestic violence yuk-yuks. It’s what Joan would have wanted.

As you can see in the video, Brian Kilmeade joked, “I think the message is, take the stairs.”

Steve Doocy, who prefers his violence behind closed doors, responded, “The message is when you’re in an elevator, there’s a camera.”

As there is on you, fellas.

In addition to their upcoming crossover with Family Guy, The Simpsons will also be encountering the cast of Futurama this November. The plot details are even more out there than you’d expect for the increasingly-gimmicky show. In a nod to The Terminator, Bender is sent back in time to kill Bart before he can cause a global catastrophe.

The crossover—which features Futurama voicecast members Billy West, John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, Tress MacNeille, and Maurice LaMarche—will unspool a complex, Terminator-esque story that involves Bart blowing his nose on a sandwich that he places in a time capsule. When that mixes with Milhouse’s rabbit’s foot and some radioactive ooze, it creates a global catastrophe in the future, prompting Bender to travel back in time to kill Bart and prevent this mega-mess. (EW)

I guess this all means that filming Al Jean clubbing a dead horse for half an hour presented legal issues.

While Weezer has, by most critical and commercial accounts, been on a downward slide since Maladroit, it makes sense that the principals of the band would examine other opportunities, and lead singer Rivers Cuomo found one…

In a comedy pilot called DeTour that he has sold to Fox. Now, it’s just a pilot, which means it’s about as valuable as, well, nothing, but it could get picked up. We’ll let you judge its worth.

The comedy focuses on a 30-something rockstar who, according to Deadline (via the A.V. Club), “unable to rationalize his success and worried that he may not have the tools to repeat it, walks away from the spotlight at the height of his fame in an effort to rediscover the parts of his life he missed while he was busy becoming a massive success.”

So it MIGHT be a little autobiographical. Maybe. No word on the status of the pilot, but we should know something later this year. If it gets us a respite from the torrent of Weezer releases, we’re all for it.

In a sad testament to how real the dangers of the reality television forerunner Cops really are, a longtime cameraman for the show, Bryce Dion, died of a gunshot injury in a shootout between police and a gunman. The showdown took place outside an Omaha-area Wendy’s where police confronted an armed robbery suspect.

The gunman was also killed after sticking up the Wendy’s only to find the police, and the film crew waiting outside. A shootout followed, which apparently left the fast food restaurant’s windows riddled with bullet holes and two men mortally injured.

The crew had been in Omaha filming for much of the summer for Spike TV, which has been airing the show after it was dropped by FOX.

There aren’t many more details available as of now, but what more is really needed? A tragic incident that, sadly, is not surprising, given the show’s history of putting film crew in harm’s way.

If you thought living without a cell phone these days is hard, just imagine how difficult it will be to watch a group of fictional people whine about not having a cellphone. Not fun, eh? Welp, FOX thinks you’re up to the challenge by bringing you All Together Now, a show about a group of friends who spur cellular technology and “engage each other for as long as they can stand it.”

Ugh. This sounds terrible. But that makes sense, considering it’s coming from Alec Sulkin, a co-producer of Family Guy, and the braintrust who brought us last season’s Dads starring Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi. The only other detail we know is that it will be an ensemble comedy. The more the merrier, I guess.

The fact that this the show is based on people not going on their cell phones is pretty alarming. I mean, sure, in real life, we’re all tethered to the damn things, but it’s not like we tune into True Blood or Curb Your Enthusiasm and the characters are constantly texting on their phones. The only show like that is The Newsroom, and we don’t mind it in that instance, because it shuts the characters up for a second.

I’m going to write a show about people who never wrestle bears.

After years and years and years of criticisms saying the show is circling the drain and that the best years are behind it, The Simpsons seems to be enjoying something of a renaissance. The show’s crossover episodes are generating a fair amount of buzz, and the rerun marathon on FXX is getting insanely good ratings. It’s a good time to be The Simpsons.

So naturally, now is the time that showrunner Al Jean decides to muse about how he would like to end the show. There’s no indication that a finale is on the horizon, but his way of shutting things down sounds pretty appealing.

He thinks that the show would end with the opening Christmas pageant from the very first episode, suggesting that the world of The Simpsons plays out on a loop, rather than linearly, and that everything will start over again. It also goes a long way to making the reruns more appealing, considering they’re actually not taking place in the past of the show. It’s weird, but practical.

Of course, no word yet on an end date. If the show can right the ship a bit, hopefully we’re years and years away.

America’s never been a place to let harsh realities get in the way of a good time. When a film gets pushed back due to real-life events, it’s normally a proactive move by the studio, not because of public outcry. However, the protests and violence in Ferguson, Missouri happened so close to the unfortunately-named Let’s Be Cops, that there wasn’t time to do much of anything. The film was released on Wednesday, and has done pretty well for itself.

How well? It’s hard to say, but it’s looking like a $25 million opening weekend for a lowbudget comedy starring two emerging stars. Not bad.

My guess is, if this thing performs well this weekend, FOX will send some folks to Ferguson and get this whole situation straightened out so that we don’t see fall-off in the second weekend.

The Terminator films have gotten a little more nebulous since the Arnold Schwarzenegger halcyon days. The films and TV shows have dealt with wars in the future, a prequel that followed John Connor through his matriculation to clown college (not really), and lots of time travel with new characters. It appears that the next installment will be finding its way a little closer to the story’s origins, with Arnold starring in the film(s) alongside Jason Clarke.

The film, which kicks off a new trilogy and TV spinoff, will be called Terminator Genisys, with “Genisys” probably serving as some heavy-handed wordplay on how the “system” was “generated.” Or somesuch bullshit.

Here’s how the announcement was delivered: By Arnold Schwarzenegger sitting in a backlit chair with the film’s title on it. Via Instagram. That’s what passes for a big reveal these days, I guess.

Boy, he wasn’t kidding when he said, “I’ll be back,” was he?!?!?!?!!!!111!!!!

Ben Stiller’s character has had some crazy nights in museums over the past decade, but that doesn’t mean he’s learned his lesson. At least in A Night at the Museum 3, it seems that being trapped in museums is at least now a conscientious decision, and not just some zany set of circumstances.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that doesn’t deter Robin Williams from appearing in this film. Depending on how you view these things, his presence might be cancelled out by Ben Kingsley‘s. If you hate Robin Williams AND Ben Kingsley, then I’m sorry to say that this might not be the film for you.

Fox’s plan to use shameless crossovers and gimmicks to maintain the relevance of its animated shows appears to be working, at least in the near-term. 5 minutes of the Family Guy-Simpsons crossover was released at Comic-Con on Friday, and it’s got people…interested.

The event, which is technically the hour-long Family Guy premiere with an appearance from The Simpsons, has been hyped shamelessly by Fox. But the fact that this thing is getting traction, lots of media attention, and, judging by the clip, a few laughs, could mean good things for the two aging shows.

Well, if not “good things,” then at least “not-so-bad things.”

This past Sunday, at the Television Critics Association press tour, the producers of The Simpsons shared with the world their upcoming plans for the new season. Unfortunately, “making the show better, like in Season 6″ wasn’t one of their tactics.

Rather, they’re just gonna kill off some another character and do crossovers with Family Guy, which will be an hour-long episode (actually written by Family Guy writers, which we discussed here) and a new crossover with Futurama.

Ok. That’s all fine, I guess, but not very encouraging. The show has recently seemed to be more and more dependent on gimmicks, which is a sign, at least in my opinion, of desperation. However, the gimmick thing may be working, as the LEGO crossover got the show some of its highest ratings in the past few years.

However, it’s unlikely that a Futurama crossover would really expose the show to anyone who wouldn’t already be watching it anyway.

In case you were wondering about who was likely to die in the new season, it’s Krusty the Klown’s dad, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky. So…

Yeah.

We already know that this season will introduce us to proto-versions of The Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and The Riddler. However, there has been a lot of talk about the inevitable appearance of The Joker. Looks like the show is going to keep you guessing about that reveal.

Bleeding Cool is reporting that each episode of Gotham will tease a nod to The Joker in some way with different characters. Each new episode will introduce a character that may or may not be the Joker, but only one will become Batman’s greatest foe. So expect to see a lot of red herrings clumsily and inordinately interested in clowns, magic tricks, and/or playing cards. Basically every character that shouldn’t be allowed near children.

Fox has hired Shane Black to contribute more than awkward and tasteless vagina jokes to the Predator oeuvre. The Lethal Weapon writer and Iron Man 3 director has signed to oversee scripting and direct a reboot of the alien hunter series. He’s teaming up with his Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker who will handle the script for producer John Davis, who is hoping that this story, the third reboot, will stick.

Black was approached nearly thirty years ago to rewrite the original Predator script but passed on the project repeatedly. Producers were so driven to get him on board that they cast Black in the original film. When he arrived on the South American set, he still refused to do any rewrites. There’s a lesson there for all us. Stick to your convictions before caving in decades later. (THR)
