On the next episode of the FX sitcom The League, airing Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 10:30 PM ET/PT, the classic sitcom trope of the wacky brother moving in comes into play. In this case, it’s Ruxin’s brother Rafi, a convicted felon who wants to know if his wife is a “light sleeper.” I guess It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia isn’t the only show in town to get laughs from incredibly creepy situations.

On next week’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, the gang plays a board game. Board games are a great way to promote friendly competition and bonding in your social circle. Unfortunately, most board games are lacking in the qualities of humiliation, degradation, and physical violence. Enter the game created by Mac and Dennis as a way to solve these problems. The episode is on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 10:00 PM ET/PT on FX. Watch it with your family, and pray they survive.

The bros of FX’s The League are always finding ways to upset their wives and eat wings. This particular clip deals with the former part of that equation, as one of the guys hires an “au pair,” which is French for “hot woman who is not married to you.” Ah, the rich. They’re different from you and me. Anyway, the new episode, called “The Au Pair,” airs on FX Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 10:30 PM ET/PT. Tune in if you like good comedy, or just need to brush up on your French.

The upcoming prequel to John Carpenter‘s horror/scifi classic The Thing called, fittingly enough, The Thing, is slithering its way to a theater near you on October 14. In anticipation of that date, why not familiarize yourself with some of the female heroes who have come before The Things’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead? Here are 4 women who kicked onscreen alien ass.

Ellen Ripley, Alien

Perhaps the definitive lady who kicks alien ass, Ellen Ripley (as portrayed by Sigourney Weaver) killed a whole bunch of Xenomorphs throughout Alien and its 3 sequels. At one point, she “gave birth” to one right before plunging into a pit of molten metal before then coming back as a clone with a little bit of alien DNA thrown in for good measure! That’s called “implausible screenwriting–” er, I mean, “dedication.”

Buffy Summers, “Listening to Fear,” Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Sometimes, one has to go outside the specific parameters of one’s job description. For example, in this season 5 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy goes on break from vampire-slaying in order to defeat an alien who is stalking her family for reasons too complicated to get into here. The alien’s MO is to cling along its prey’s ceiling while the unlucky bastard is in bed, before dropping down on their faces and suffocating them. It’s also no slouch in the slime department. Buffy makes quick work of it, though, by carving it up with a butcher knife. Delicious!

Florence Norris, Mars Attacks!

The character of Richie’s grandmother, played by Sylvia Sidney in Mars Attacks!, proves that you don’t have to be able to walk to kick alien ass, nor do you even have to have total control over your mental faculties. All you really need to make Martian skulls explode in their space helmets is a record collection that includes the sounds of Slim Whitman. It may not be hip, but it works.

Sam, Attack the Block

In Attack the Block, the primary kicker of alien ass is Moses. But he has a reluctant ass-kicking partner in Sam, a nurse played by Jodie Whittaker. While her action against the alien invaders in the movie is less show-offy than her male counterpart, it’s no less integral to stopping the alien invasion. She also gets to shoot one of the aliens when her more-experienced-with-guns companions aren’t fast enough. She never says “bruv,” though. Maybe in the sequel.

Apparently my theory that people will pay a theoretically infinite amount of money to see The Lion King is one step closer to being proven true: The 3D re-release of a nearly 20-year-old movie (holy god, is The Lion King really 17 years old? Man oh man) is the number one film at the box office for a second-straight weekend. Does this mean Disney is going to extend its originally two-week limited engagement? It’s not known for sure, but when have you known Disney to turn down a buck?

Taylor Lautner Still Running, Hiding In Second 'Abduction' Trailer

Anyway, The Lion King managed to hold onto the top spot even though it had the much-buzzed-about Moneyball and Abduction as competition. Of those two, Moneyball did the best, riding an all-star cast to a $20.6 million opening weekend for 2nd place. Abduction didn’t do quite so well, with an $11.2 million opening weekend, putting it in 4th place, right behind Dolphin Tale. The other big movie to open this week, The Killer Elite, made an expendable $9.5 million for fifth place. (The Playlist)

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has never been afraid of digging into dark and/or topical areas for humor. Coming up next week on Thursday, September 29 at 10:00 PM ET/PT on FX, that dark and topical area is “child beauty pageants.” I’ll save the juicy details for the video, but suffice it to say that Frank gets involved in a child beauty pageant which leads to some horrifying white make-up and a case of the Frank doth protesting too much. Nightmares can be incredibly terrfiying – take for example the dream I had last night in which I was seduced by a creature who was half-octopus, half-Charles S. Dutton.

So it makes sense that at least some of the upcoming FX horror series, American Horror Story, would have to do with dreams. As you can see above, this video has a lot of dreamlike imagery and music, from the backwards-in-places score to actual dialogue discussing dreams.

Man, all this dream-talk is making me want a nap. I hope I don’t dream about that old leather guy again. No, not Charles S. Dutton!

Though they may have skimped when it came to bringing Wilford Brimley back, the makers of The Thing prequel look to have spared no expense when it comes to grossing us out.

IGN debuted a new red band trailer that has tentacles and body parts twisting every which way. Though it doesn’t seem like it comes close to touching John Carpenter‘s version with a ten-foot arm/tongue pole, at least it seems to have created some gross imagery.

Conventional wisdom is that audiences are always craving something new. Cynical wisdom is that “new” is that absolute last thing most audience members want, and the 3D rerelease of The Lion King would seem to affirm the latter wisdom more than the former. The 3D version of the movie every kid in America already owns on DVD made a very generous $29 million in its opening weekend (of a two-week “limited engagement”).

'Drive' Trailer Has Fast Cars And Albert Brooks

Holding the number 2 spot was last week’s big opener Contagion with a respectable $14.5 million weekend gross. The critically stratospheric (but unfortunately unseen by me this weekend) Drive had a nice, indie-friendly 3rd place opening of $11 million. Maybe it’ll do better when it gets rereleased in 3D. You may have heard of the action miniseries Strike Back, now showing in between Alien Sex Files parts 4 and 5 on Cinemax.  If you haven’t, here’s a quick synopsis of episode 5, which premiered last night on Friday, September 16:

“After their previous trail went cold, Section 20′s next move is to track Latif’s (Jimi Mistry) weapons supplier, which leads them to Gerald Crawford (Iain Glen), a former British Royal Marine turned arms dealer. Once they snatch him, he agrees to help them only if they rescue his daughter Clare (Laura Haddock), an aid worker in the Sudan who is being held for ransom by a brutal militia leader Tahir (Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje). The team reluctantly works with a questionable government official as a middleman to set up the exchange. When Scott is recognized by a war zone reporter and old flame Maggie (Rachel Shelley), he discovers that the story she was investigating may be intertwined with the arms deal.  At the exchange point, Tahir has a different idea of doing the deal ‘in good faith.’”

Got it? Anyway, there’s a clip from the show above, and another clip below, both of which should provide your striking back needs until you can catch the episode on Cinemax. Enjoy!

The upcoming FX horror series, American Horror Story, promises to provide viewers with “everything you love about a thriller, nothing you expect.” These short promo clips seem to bear that out, with lots of shiny leather and weird visual effects.

This first one is the most subtle of the bunch – the creepiest thing in it is a simple shot of a staircase, which is still pretty creepy, don’t get me wrong.

Now things are starting to get weird. Remember that shiny leather I told you about? Yeah, it’s here. If there’s one thing to make a haunted house creepier it’s a little S&M imagery.

This last one is the creepiest of all – even more shiny leather shots, plus some kind of weird topsy-turvy room to boot. It’s kind of like the shining meets Lady Gaga meets the creator of Glee. Jesus, that truly is horrifying.

The show premieres on October 5th, on FX.

The NFL is back, and not a moment too soon. I’ve been running out of excuses for spending my Sundays piss drunk at a bar shoving fried food down my throat. But from now until February, NFL football will enable me to act like the pig I truly am. The problem is this: when you’re near blacked out by halftime of the early game, it can be hard to remember what channel is covering the late game. Well, we’ve got you covered. Below you’ll find a guide containing all the info you’ll need.

Here’s where you can find the games this season:

NBC

The season kicked off last night when the last two Superbowl champs, the Packers and the Saints, met at Lambeau Field, and the whole affair was broadcast on NBC. Going forward, the network will also broadcast the Sunday night games, beginning with the Dallas Cowboys facing the New York Jets on September 11th. Al Michaels hosts the play-by-play while Cris Collinsworth fills in the color commentary. Bob Costas, Dan Patrick, Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, and Peter King report live from the game and handle pregame hosting duties.

ESPN

Monday nights belong to ESPN once again. This year, get ready for some football when the New England Patriots head to South Florida to square off against the Miami Dolphins on September 12th. Mike Tirico is on play-by-play and Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski provide color commentary. Additional reporting comes from Suzy Kolber.

FOX

FOX is the station that you’ll do a good majority of your screaming at on Sundays this fall. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will host the broadcasts of the NFC regional regular season games as well as the NFC playoffs. Curt Menefee hosts the pregame with in-studio analysts Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson, and Michael Strahan. Pregame and sideline reporting duties  will be covered by Pam Oliver.

 CBS

And you can catch the AFC regular season games as well as the AFC playoffs on Sunday afternoons on CBS. James Brown hosts with play-by-play from Jim Nantz, Marv Albert, Craig Bolerjack, Don Criqui, Spero Dedes, Ian Eagle, Greg Gumbel, Kevin Harlan, Bill Macatee. Studio analysts are Phil Simms, Charley Casserly, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason, Dan Marino, and Shannon Sharpe.

NFL Network

You’d better get yourself a satellite dish if you want to catch the Thursday night games. Rich Eisen, Steve Mariucci, Deion Sanders, and Marshall Faulk report live with contributions from  Kara Henderson and Michelle Beisner. Brad Nessler is on play-by-play and Mike Mayock is analyst starting this season. Beginning in Week 10, NFL Network will begin showing Thursday games with Oakland making the long trek to San Diego. Just hope that you don’t get heavy rain or sunspots in your area.

It's The End Of The World As We Know It In 'Melancholia' Trailer

Lars Von Trier is famous for making movies that are impeccably shot, memorably acted, and depressing as hell. And so it appears to be in this new trailer for Melancholia, his new disaster/depression movie starring Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgård, Udo Kier, and others.

Even more than the last trailer, this one shows the movie’s gorgeous cinematography and allows you to see a little more of the celestial action in the movie, about a second planet (named “Melancholia“) crashing into our planet (named “Earth“). It also begins with the inspiring words “we are alone, there is only life on Earth.” A happy thought to kick off your long weekend with!

Apollo 18 has released its creepiest trailer yet, just days before launch. The found footage horror opens this Friday in theaters and from the looks of things, it’s going to be scary. Much like Blair Witch made you afraid of the woods and Paranormal Activity made you afraid of houses, this one will really make you wary of going to the moon. This looks a lot scarier than the crap that Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton had to deal with.

The bromance between OK Go and the Muppets continues. This time in the form of a music video that is a pretty thorough marriage of the Muppets‘ sense of humor and the band’s inventive viral videos. The remix of The Muppet Show Theme was recorded for Jason Segel‘s Muppet Movie and appears as the first single from the MuppetsGreen Album.

As expected, it’s a pretty impressive effort that features many of the Muppets and their distinctive traits. Think of all the hours spent with hands up the talent. Did Hype Williams direct this?

This behind the scenes look at Real Steel shows us exactly what makes the robots tick. Surprisingly, it’s not Andy Serkis.

Boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard is the man behind the mo-cap this time, choreographing fight moves with actual boxers (imagine if he played Gollum). Normally I’d make a joke about the spandex and motion-ball outfits, but I value my jaw so I’ll let this one slide. Also featured are stars Hugh Jackman and Anthony Mackie, who do their best to act against nothing. I’m talking about the special effects, you guys. Not Evangeline Lilly.

'The Muppets' Trailer, For Real This Time

Those lovable monsters/puppets The Muppets are coming to a theater near you (again) on November 23rd. In anticipation of this, Disney recently unveiled a bunch of new photos from the movie. You can check them out above – highlights include appearances by Chris Cooper and Wanda Sykes, not to mention a bunch of Muppet faces, both familiar and obscure. Want more funny pictures?

Apparently, the presentation on The Muppets at D23 was a success, with the clips and live portions getting positive reactions from those in attendance. Nobody from Screen Junkies is at D23 though, so you’ll have to make do with these photos. You read it here first. (The Playlist)
