BBC Remaking ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’

The joke is in the headline people. I don’t know why this is so amusing to me – the show did phenomenally well, and comforted millions of American Airlines passengers during gate holds and holding patters – but I just think it’s funny that no one could come up with an original take on the premise of a schlubby guy and his mean wife and parents.

“We’re in way over our bloody heads here. Let’s just license Raymond.”

(That’s how I imagine the BBC producers addressing the issue. You can tell they’re British because of their colorful language.)

It’s called The Smiths, and it will star Catherine Tate and Lee Mack as the schlubmaster general.

Of course, Russia already took to adapting Raymond, which tells us that a) TV execs aren’t very creative in other countries either, and b) lots of audiences worldwide hate their families.

If I had a nickel for every time someone was all, “Oh dude. I so wish that Everybody Loves Raymond had more gothic vigilante justice,” or “I wish The Crow would spend a little more time pontificating on the burden of mother-in-laws,” I would have a shit ton of nickels.

But it looks like my cash cow has dried up. No one will be asking for either of those anymore because it exists right here. And it’s pretty terrific. Check it.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” is one of the most popular sitcoms to ever be on TV. And now it seems that our friends in Russia (who also like X-Men) want a piece of that action, and they’re going to the show’s creator Phil Rosenthal to get it. Funny, right? Well, as you can see in the trailer, even though this all really happened, Exporting Raymond kind of seems like a sitcom on its own. Or at least it’s been edited to look that way. Personally, I’d only watch “Everybody in Russia Hates Phil” if it were on HBO. Here’s a plot synopsis, in case the trailer isn’t clear enough:

“Writers can often form a strange relationship with their own work and sometime it can be hard to let it go. Follow Phil Rosenthal, Emmy Award-winning creator of the hit TV series Everybody Loves Raymond, in this incredibly funny documentary about the attempt to translate Raymond into a Russian sitcom.”

Exporting Raymond is entering a theater near you to thunderous and annoying applause from the live studio audience on April 29th. (via /Film)
