Of course, that headline is a gross simplification, but it would seem that gross oversimplifications suit Orson Scott Card just fine. Card, in discussing whether or not his novel Ender’s Game was tainted by his documented homophobia, recently claimed Ender’s Game “has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.”

This statement of course begs the question of when gay rights became a “political issue.” My guess would probably be around season 2 of Will and Grace, but I tend to lean liberal. More conservative folks could argue that it wasn’t until Modern Family hit its stride did gays rights really become a thing that merited addressing.

Anyway, Card’s rampant homophobia is available for consumption right here. He also refers to anyone crusading to grant the right of marriage to gays as his “mortal enemy,” so I guess that’s one more mortal enemy on my list.

Bummer.

Old Man Harrison Ford To Star In Adaptation Of Old Sci-Fi Book, ‘Ender’s Game’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/old-man-harrison-ford-to-star-in-adaptation-of-old-sci-fi-book-enders-game/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/old-man-harrison-ford-to-star-in-adaptation-of-old-sci-fi-book-enders-game/#comments Thu, 22 Dec 2011 17:46:10 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=240574 I hope this is the first role that let's him wear that tiny little earring in character.

To be fair, the book is only 26-years old, which is only like a third of Harrison Ford’s age.

Ford has been recruited by the producers of Ender’s Game to play Hyram Graff, a colonel who tries to manipulate the boy-genius Ender into becoming a weapon against an alien threat.

Aliens again, Harrison? Didn’t we learn anything over the summer?

With this casting news, it appears that the actors of Ender’s Game are falling into two very distinct camps. Very young and very old. Along with Ford, Ben Kingsley has been cast as Ender’s (played by Asa Butterfield) mentor, and True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld will play Ender’s classmate Petra.

While the Ford news is probably only interesting to fans of the novel, the fact that he will have to do press for this film, probably with kids, probably while stoned, is pretty great.

There was a lot of distribution action today, ensuring that several fanboy faves will actually get released despite frustratingly long delays up to this point. So let’s start off with a project that’s been in limbo for ages now.

Cabin in the Woods looks like it has found a home in Lionsgate. The Joss Whedon-helmed horror pic has so far suffered a year-and-a-half delay that seems to have nothing to do with the quality of the film and everything to do with the corporate typhoon that took place at MGM. Expect release news soon. (Deadline)

Summit Entertainment has snatched up the U.S. rights to the fabled sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, having gotten Wolverine director Gavin Hood attached to the project as well. Summit is waving a tearful goodbye to Twilight, so they’re on the lookout for a new franchise, and this could very well be it. (Deadline)

Fox has taken back Shawn Levy‘s Kodachrome, which Fox had first-look rights to, but didn’t actually get a chance to consider before Levy sold the project to Dreamworks. It was apparently an honest mistake, but I will not let a simple thing like the truth get in the way of a perceived feud between Shawn Levy and Fox. THEY WANT BLOOD! Anyway, Fox decided it does want Kodachrome and exercised its first-look option. (Variety)

The writing duo responsible for writing pretty much everything have joined Gavin Hood‘s adaptation of Ender’s Game. Strangely Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will not handle scripting duties on this as they’ve entrusted that to X-Men Origins: Wolverine director Hood. Which I take to mean they haven’t seen X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Ender’s will carve another notch into Kurtzman and Orci’s producing resume. They have previously produced Eagle Eye, Star Trek, and Cowboys & Aliens. In summation, these guys have enough money and power that they can afford to not look like lesbians anymore. (via /Film)
