When we think of a Donald Sobol’s Encyclopedia Brown series, which we do on an almost hourly basis, we think of something along the Dennis the Menace-esque lines of mischief and charm.

While Warner Bros. might adhere to that approach, as it would almost surely garner the most box office revenue from movie-going families, they’ve got a funny way of showing it in picking up screenwriter Matthew Johnson, known for this intense high school portrayal The Dirties, to craft the lovable, interloping scamp.

This departure is interesting, but gritty certainly doesn’t mean “good.” It could mean “unintentionally funny” if Johnson was to, for reasons unknown give Mr. Brown a heroin addiction and set the stage for his evolution into the very Mr. Brown from the Reservoir Dogs film.

That would be pretty special.
