Here’s hoping 6-year old Quvenzhané Wallis wins for Beasts of the Southern Wild. She’s this year’s Uggie.

Of course, all eyes will be on Seth MacFarlane as he takes the seemingly thankless job of show host. It will be his greatest test as he once again resists the urge to sing about the carpet matching the drapes as he introduces Jessica Chastain or Helen Mirren.

These versions of the films hew closer to the comics in which Mary Jane becomes Peter Parker’s love interest after she helps him grieve over the death of Gwen Stacy. Emma Stone has made it known that she’d like her character to be killed so perhaps that happens in the sequel, or a later entry. Or, considering Stone hasn’t yet signed on, maybe it happens off-camera like with Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men.

It’s been a forgone conclusion that Electro would factor into the sequel as a villian, but now there’s word that maybe sorta confirms it. Though there’s no mention of what actor will dress ridiculously for the role. (Variety)

In addition to the action, we’re also given a glimpse of the mystery. Who is that raspy-voiced, shadowy figure demanding to know if Dr. Curt Connors told Peter the truth about his father. Is it Norman Osborne? Peter’s dad?? Denis Leary after a heavy smoking day??? All will be revealed when The Amazing Spider-Man opens in theaters on June 30th.

This wingman doesn’t even have to be a man. They can be a girl, a dog, or a team of speaking cockroaches. Whatever helps get you some action. Here are our nominees for the ultimate movie wingmen.

Randall ‘Pink’ Floyd – Dazed and Confused

Randall ‘Pink’ Floyd proved himself to be one of the ultimate wingmen when took on the cause of Mitch Kramer in Richard Linklater‘s Dazed and Confused. Not only did he save him from and endear him to bullies, he also got him drunk and high. As if that weren’t enough, he taught him the tools he needed to woo the girl of his dreams.

Jay, Dave, and Cal – The 40-Year-Old Virgin

Jay, Dave, and Cal banded together to do the impossible — get Steve Carell‘s Andy some ass. Upon finding out that the 40-year-old has never punched V-card, the trio behave as if his dick is their dick and do all that they can to get him in the game. They take him speed dating, crash bachelorette parties, and teach him the pick-up techniques he needs to nab Elizabeth Banks‘s hot bookstore employee, Beth. Of course, their plans come up short but you can’t blame the guys for trying.

Olive – Easy A

Olive is the best. She’s totally hot which means that when other women see you with her, you’ll pique their interest. Secondly, she’ll pretend to have sex with you and pass along the word that you made her squirt. This is ideal because the rumor mill will do the work for you while you sit back and play The Waiting Game. Or Fireball Island.

Ablene Cooper, who worked for the brother of Kathryn Stockett, the book’s author, claims that one of protagonists, a maid named Aibileen, is based on her. She came to this conclusion after noting several similarities between her and the character, such as…

• Both have names that begin with the letter ‘a’ (Ablene and Aibileen)
• Both are maids…
• Both worked in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960′s…
• Both have a gold tooth…
• Both lost a son to cancer.

Considering that the author of the book knew Cooper, it’s not a stretch to believe that the similarities are more than coincidence. But is there enough for a lawsuit? After all, the name has been changed, and the book claims to be a work of fiction. Isn’t that enough to ward off this kind of legal trouble? Not necessarily.

According to Mark Litwak’s Entertainment Law Resources, there is no problem with basing a character off of a real individual, so long as the public cannot readily identify the individual in question. On his website, Litwak encourages writers to change the context surrounding their characters as well as their names in order to avoid any unwanted recognition. But aside from the name, Stockett failed to do this in The Help. Both Cooper and her fictional character share many defining characteristics, including location, profession, the loss of a son, and a particularly damning gold tooth.

However, another matter comes into play. Did this fictionalized portrayal of Cooper defame her in any way? Citing the case of Leopold v. Levin, in which convicted murderer Nathan Leopold sued the author of a fictionalized novel based on his case, Litwak claims that such a fictionalized portrayal would have to be highly offensive to meet the “standard for determining invasion of privacy.” Although Cooper’s lawyers are pointing to a scene in which the character of Aibileen compares her skin color to that of a roach, the idea that the film is somehow defaming Cooper is tough to swallow.

Other questions remain which bring Cooper’s motives into doubt. For starters, it would seem that the one-year statute of limitations has already run out. Second, why is she only seeking $75,000? Third, the fact that Cooper waited until the film was released to start making a fuss is somewhat suspect. But no matter how it plays out, one thing is certain: I would rather bash my head into a brick wall than sit through this movie.

Just Like Heaven (2005)

I watched this film while on a cruise with a girl who had come down with seasickness. As it turns out, the sound of her violently retching was the perfect background to this Reese Witherspoon turd. It has the same plot as the Bill Cosby bomb Ghost Dad, with about half of the laughs. Considering I laughed exactly once at Ghost Dad, that doesn’t say much for Just Like Heaven.

The Beautician and the Beast (1997)

When a sassy beautician travels to a far away county to work for a ruthless dictator, only one thing can happen: genital electrocution followed by a swift beheading. At least that’s what would happen in real life. In Hollywood, the two fall in love. Poor Fran Drescher. She could never step out from the shadow of her most memorable role: the reporter chick in UHF.

Alex & Emma (2003)

Rob Reiner is a huge anti-smoking advocate, yet he has no problem unleashing pollution like Alex & Emma onto the unsuspecting public. The film involves an author (Luke Wilson), a stenographer (Kate Hudson), and the Cuban Mafia. If that doesn’t excite you, it’s also worth noting that Kate Hudson plays three different roles, each with its own wacky accent. Sigh.

Something’s Gotta Give (2003)

In Something’s Gotta Give, Keanu Reeves‘s character falls in love with a woman played by Diane Keaton. Yeah, you read that right. I don’t care what Sex in the City says, there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell of that happening. A guy in his 30′s falling for a woman in her 50′s is about as likely as Lance Bass falling in love with a girl. Speaking of which…

On the Line (2001)

The plot of On the Line revolves around a shy guy (Lance Bass) who meets the girl of his dreams on a train, but doesn’t have the stones to ask her out. He then goes to great lengths to track her down, and wackiness ensues. Actually, replace the word wackiness with awfulness, and you’re right on target. This film also stars Joey Fatone, which only adds to the overpowering shittness. The only thing that saves this film from being number one on the list is the fact that Bass has since come out of the closet, so watching him pretend to be interested in a woman is unintentionally hysterical.

‘Crazy Stupid Love’ Looks Neither Crazy Nor Stupid

Right away the humor speaks to really important issues. Cal (Steve Carell) refuses to talk when his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) asks for a divorce. It’s funny when he rolls out of a moving car, but he’s also really avoiding something with which he needs to deal. Then we meet Jacob (Ryan Gosling) picking up babes in a bar. His swagger is good enough but not so great that I’m jealous of his lines. That’s Mr. Notebook for you. And he still eats pizza, even with his Adonis body.

Jacob takes an interest in Cal out of sympathy. It’s Swingers meets Training Day when he shows Cal the ropes. The clubs are almost too loud to hear the dialogue, so the film is honest about even its locations. When Cal tries what Jacob taught him, it is too mean. That’s real. I did that. You learn The Mystery Method but if it’s not natural then you’re just insulting someone. The Hollywood twist is that he wins over Kate (Marisa Tomei) by being himself.

The story involves the whole family. Cal and Emily’s son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) gets to be funny, starring down Emily’s new boyfriend David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon.) Cal really talks to Robbie, and to Emily. I really love Jessica (Analeigh Tipton). This poor teenage babysitter is struggling to express herself but she’s so genuine and sweet. She makes some scandalous choices but it’s innocent and real. She’s also 13-year-old Robbie’s dream girl, and we’ve all been there.

There’s some real filmmaking going on in this too. Cal’s evolution with the ladies is shown in a tracking shot where Cal appears at a different table with different women without ever cutting. That’s an artistically sound use of visual effects. Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa let a door open on Jessica and the light overexposes her. The love scene lighting is beautiful with a gentle camera.

Dan Fogelman’s screenplay knows when to shift focus, giving one thread a moment to simmer. After a blowout between Cal and Emily, Hannah (Emma Stone) finds her way to Jacob and it’s their story for a while. The ensemble intermingles organically. Funny dialogue still has emotional ramifications. The film never takes the easy way out with a misunderstanding fueling some empty doubletalk. Misunderstandings just bring the forces together but the film plays fair. They’re even smart about the rain cliché.

There is a moment where the wisdom of a child provokes a big speech from the parent, but they earned it. There’s still no easy fix. I can’t believe a studio film allowed so much ambiguity. Most of all, Robbie’s graduation gift is so daring I can’t believe Warner Brothers allowed it. I mean, it could seem inappropriate but not once you’ve spent time with these characters.

It looks like she’s getting her wish as she’s now in talks with the producers to play Jean, a sassy lady caught in romances between Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, Variety reports.

Stone has made quite a name for herself moving from supporting roles in films like Superbad and Zombieland to starring roles in Easy A and the much-hyped The Amazing Spider-Man, so why wouldn’t she want in on the biggest drama Hollywood’s got up its sleeve, save for perhaps The Savages?

Dammit! She’s Emma Stone, she’s gonna be in Gangster Squad whether you want her to be or not!

Overall, it looks like a somewhat darker look at the webslinger. Here, Andrew Garfield‘s Peter is portrayed as more of a sensitive loner than Tobey Maguire‘s total nuuurd take on the character. It’s a little light on the action but we are privy to a bridge shot where something (most likely the Lizard) is throwing cars into the air with ease as well as a Spidey POV shot as he swings from Manhattan rooftops which looks like a really cool video game intro. Let’s hope those effects aren’t slated to appear in the final film.

Emma Stone has signed on to play Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Variety is reporting. The film, which is being produced in part by Natalie Portman, retells the classic Jane Austen novel, but with an added bonus of the zombie apocalypse being used as a backdrop.

The fact that the Spidey set is making the trip down there isn’t that surprising. Though it’s a ways out from the release of the film, next year’s Comic-Con comes a few weeks late, and it’s not like the crew could just SKIP Comic-Con. That would be comic-book movie marketing suicide. So this year it is.

The new ensemble romantic comedy Crazy Stupid Love has a shiny new trailer, and it looks better than the usual crop of mid-to-upper level romcoms. Steve Carell heads a top notch cast including Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon, and Marisa Tomei. The film appears to be about a recently divorced/separated man (Carrel) who gets a bit of a “Hitch” treatment from younger, suaver, and all around alpha-er male Ryan Gosling. Oh, and then Emma Stone shows up and I got all distracted and couldn’t focus on anything else that happens. It’s directed by Bad Santa duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and comes out July 29th.

It’s only a matter of time before we see Mila Kunis play Woody Harrelson’s unlikely love interest as they butt heads while traveling to the group wedding of Justin Timberlake, Emma Stone, and Andy Samberg. Which will be presided over by Patricia Clarkson. Look for Goin’ To The Chapel by Spring of 2013.

The original About Last Night starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, and concerned a couple who begin dating even though their friends disapprove. Sounds like literally every single one of my relationships. I’m not crying I just have something in my eye! (Variety)

Stone didn’t elaborate further – in fact, all she says in the video is that the silver discs in the recently released photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man are “a device.” So maybe it’s actually a wrist-mounted lasergun and the movie’s going to be called Spider-Man, Cowboys and Aliens. Taylor Lautner look-alike and ABC Family regular Chris Zylka has signed up to shove around Peter Parker. Zylka will play Flash Thompson in the upcoming Spider-man reboot, which recently started rolling film. In the comics, Flash had a propensity to give Peter Parker grief while at the same time totally jonesing on Spider-man. Oh Flash, if only you knew they were the same person. Now that Emma Stone is a pretty big deal, she’s having to drop out of a few projects. She was originally attached to Jonah Hill’s 21 Jump Street, but Sony came calling with the Spider-Man offer and it was too sweet to refuse. Does the name Stephen J. Cannell carry no weight these days???

Though she can’t clear her schedule to appear in Jump Street, she does comment that Jonah Hill is one of her favorite people in the entire world. As for Spider-Man, they’re getting really close. With shooting slated to begin in two weeks, Emma just got her hair did for the role of Gwen Stacy. Sony also sent her and Andrew Garfield to science school to introduce the home-schooled Stone to the high school experience. Actor, comedian, and all around angry man Denis Leary is joining the cast of Spider-Man. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leary will play police captain George Stacy, a friend of Spidey who is also the father of the web-slinger’s love interest, Gwen Stacy. For those of you who don’t know, Gwen Stacy will be played by Emma Stone, who is ridiculously hot.

This marks Leary’s first onscreen performance in a theatrical film since 2002′s The Secret Lives of Dentists. But no matter what happens, I’ll always remember him as renegade Edgar Friendly from the 1993 classic, Demolition Man. I still don’t know how to use the three seashells.

Channing Tatum is steppin’ up 2 da 21 Jump Street. The actor is in talks to don Silly Bandz and return to high school to totally narco on the student body with Jonah Hill. Before you groan and throw your body to the supermarket floor in protest and force me to drag you out by your leg, just know that this could be a good thing. There’s a lot of ver funny people calling the shots on this film and Tatum sounds like a casting choice that could work. “Clone High” creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who also brought us Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs) are to be rooted behind the director’s monitor, Hill scripted, and Emma Stone is rumored to be a part of the project. And everyone likes Emma Stone. She’s like sugar to us.

The film itself is said to be a blend of comedy and Bad Boys-style action, based around the concept that these cops look too young to be effective as cops. I’m not saying that Channing Tatum is the perfect choice for this (I’d be more interested in seeing Chris Pine in the role), but we could do a lot worse. How? Zac Efron and Keenan Thompson. So count your blessings and get up off the floor. You’re embarrassing me and people are trying to get through with their carriages. (HitFix)

It looks like Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man isn’t quite the pimp we expected him to be. The Wrap reports that Mary Jane Watson will not appear in the Sony’s franchise reboot. Red-headed Watson appeared in the three previous films, but didn’t factor into the life of Peter Parker until later in the comics. They’ve decided to stay closer to that classic comic storyline with Spidey’ high school honey Gwen Stacy being his one and only.

As previously reported, Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy, but now there’s new news that when Sony cast her, they didn’t know who she would play. They just knew that they wanted to exploit our collective geek crush by getting her. After casting, it was decided the red-headed Stone would play the blonde Stacy. Shortly after, an office production assistant was sent out to pick up a box of L’Oreal Superior Preference Dream Blonde.

If all goes as planned for the folks behind the upcoming Spider Man reboot, we’ll soon see Martin Sheen shot to death at the hands of an anonymous burglar. If we’re lucky, he might even utter a few blood-choked words of deathbed wisdom. Sheen is in the final round of talks to play Uncle Ben, Peter Parker’s former father figure-turned-corpse whose death prompts Parker to walk the streets at night in red latex. As a superhero, of course, not a whore.

Sheen will star alongside Andrew Garfield as Parker, Rhys Ifans as the film’s villain, the Lizard, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Parker’s latest damsel in distress. Marc Webb is set to direct the reboot, with production currently slated to begin in December.

Sony Pictures will offer Easy A star Emma Stone the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-man Reboot, Deadline is reporting. I imagine the actress will say yes, unless she hates the feel and smell of money. If this news is true, thank God they’ve knocked out one more casting decision.

Next one up is the role of Gwen Stacy, Spidey’s first love. The actresses currently in contention are Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig, and Dominique McElligott.
