And though it’s just Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Rachael Taylor, Max Minghella, and Joel Kinnaman literally running away from nothing, it still looks pretty good. Definitely like the way that the aliens disintegrate their victims by pulling them into their force-fields. We’ve been discussing it here at Screen Junkies HQ and it doesn’t seem like a bad way to go. Way better than drowning.

The director is finally dusting off his sci-fi caper film, now with the clever name “untitled Moon project,” which has been lingering at Paramount after a jump from Dreamworks in 2007. After rewrites by top screenwriters like Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes), and now that Liman’s All You Need Is Kill is getting killed for lack of momentum at Warner Bros, Liman is ready to round up actors for a good old fashioned space heist.

For the male lead, Limon’s met with Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine. Of course, Chris Pine has spaceperience (space experience) as Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk, but I’m sure Spider-Man‘s been to space a bunch of times. No biggie. Jake Gyllenhaal used to be attached, but he ain’t no more.

Here’s the plot:

The story centers on a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal — or in this case, kidnap — is an ex-NASA employee.

You’ve got to hand it to them – if you’re a criminal, what better place is there to escape to than the moon? It’s very unlikely the police will follow you in a squad rocket. Then again, how do you inconspicuously re-enter the earth’s atmosphere? (Hollywood Reporter)

The elder Fanning is joining The Motel Life opposite Emile Hirsch and her sister’s Somewhere co-star Stephen Dorff. In the film, Hirsch and Dorff star at brothers on the run after a deadly hit and run. There’s no word on who Fanning will play but I’ll take a stab in the dark and say jailbait hitchhiker who divides the pair. Now please excuse me while I clear my recent browsing history. (Variety)

Y’know. Like, he likes these kinds of roles. Seems like a character he’d be interested in playing, is what I’m trying to say. I certainly wasn’t insinuating that Dorff would be involved in a hit-and-run accident. And definitely not one directly outside Bar Marmont that occurred between the hours of 2 and 3a.m. this morning. Perhaps not promising enough to make their ambitious schedule, which contemplates shooting this year, despite having a director, co-stars, or even a screenwriter on board. C’mon, Polsk brothers. Bust a move.

The Motel Life centers around two destitute brothers who flee their digs at a Reno motel after one drunkenly hits and kills a young teenager riding a bike. The two eventually return to Reno where they face judgment for their actions. The story is promising, and the casting of Hirsch appears to be a great fit, after seeing him play a similar hard-up character in Alpha Dog.

The project seems to be a ways from completion, so it’s difficult to presume how this project will play out, but the Polsky brothers have been hanging tight for a while, which suggests that they aren’t willing to turn this over to just anyone. Sorry, Brett Ratner. (Playlist)
