In case there was some subset of of Edgar Wright fans that weren’t going to see Star Trek Into Darkness anyway (I mean, Simon Pegg‘s already in it!), they will now, armed with the knowledge that Edgar Wright directed a scene.

What scene? A scene on Klingon with Kirk, John Harrison, and Uhuru. None of that means anything to me, but maybe it will to you. Note the conspicuous absence of Mr. Pegg. COULD THERE BE TROUBLE IN PARADISE BETWEEN THE LONGTIME FRIENDS?

Nah. They seem pretty chill.

The film has already opened in Europe, and hits US theaters next week, so you’ll have to writhe around until then to see what all the fuss is about. You can do it. I know you can.

All Simon Pegg wants to do is complete the Golden Mile. The epic pub crawl he and his friends failed to finish decades earlier consists of twelve pubs in the same town, the last of which is “The World’s End.” However, there’s a new obstacle in their way.Frickin’ body snatchers.

With The World’s End, Edgar Wright, Pegg, and Nick Frost complete the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy they began with Shaun of the Dead and continued with Hot Fuzz. Up until this point, the plot was tightly under wraps with no mention of skin-walking alien invaders, which now just makes the film all the more awesome. And again with the fences.

We’ll need to wait until October 24th, 2013 to see the final entry in the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, but we have to wait zero minutes to see the poster for The World’s End. As with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost are all back together to skewer Hollywood and mundanity in one fell swoop.

In the film, Pegg and Frost join Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, and Eddie Marsan as a group of old friends reuniting for an epic pub crawl. However, they’ve inconveniently scheduled it the same night as armageddon. Check out the poster below and let me know what you think. Seems to me that if it were my last night on Earth, I’d want something a bit tastier than “good” food.

Marvel Studios and director Edgar Wright played a little bit of a prank on the media and fans for Comic-Con this year. In the lead-up to their panel for the upcoming Iron Man 3, director Edgar Wright posted on his Twitter account about being in London and missing Comic-Con, etc. Well it turns out this was all a smokescreen to hide the fact that ahead of the Iron Man 3 panel Marvel Studios was going to show some test footage shot for Ant-Man, with Wright in attendance.

And although there’s no casting news or a release date yet, they showed the shit out of that test footage! It’s about a minute long and showed Ant-Man at ant-size taking out two full-sized henchmen with his incredible shrinking powers. So, with this test footage, plus Marvel’s online announcement that an Ant-Man movie, which we first started hearing about in 2006, is finally coming, and it looks like it’s really happening. Ant-Man Fever: Catch It! That’s mine, not Marvel’s. (The Playlist)

It's a step in the right direction.

With the film being on their production slate since the mid-2000′s, it looks like Marvel’s Ant-Man is inching closer to reality. Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World writer/director Edgar Wright has just finished shooting a test reel for the film. Though this is a far cry from an actual film, it will give Wright a good idea of how to eventually pull off the look and tone of the film which he’s co-written with Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish. These tests will also help establish a way to make Ant-Man‘s powers look convincing on-screen.

There’s also hopes that a Wright-directed Ant-Man clip will be the after-the-credits Easter Egg attached to next year’s Iron Man 3.

With Marvel slated to make a big announcement about their secret film project at Comic-Con, this test reel news only adds to the speculation. However, Latino Review have reported that Guardians of the Galaxy have been chosen for Marvel’s 2014 release. Just last month, the website reported that Black Panther would be the mystery film on Marvel’s slot. Those reports were debunked. So take the Guardians report with a grain of salt. We won’t really know until Comic-Con whether or not Latino Review are correct or once again totally full of beans.

Expect to see a lot of him in the next 'Mission: Impossible' sequel.

Simon Pegg had dinner with a group of online journalists to promote the August DVD release of Paul. We’ll have more on Paul later, but Pegg shared a few tidbits about his next collaboration with Edgar Wright, The Adventures of Tintin, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. As for Star Trek 2, he just reiterated what we’ve all been hearing – that they’re aiming for a fall shoot.

A World’s End

The long awaited end of the trilogy begun with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz might not be a genre movie at all. “One thing Edgar and me have discussed, we’ve been away for a weekend and got things going, is that we’re not going to just do what we’ve done before,” Pegg said. “Even though we want this film to be like Shaun of the Dead times Hot Fuzz, we’re not the genre guys. I think people want to figure us out and they want to know who we are. That’s not it. So we’re not going to do okay, let’s do cowboys next. What Edgar and I are trying to do is fit in some writing time before I start Star Trek.”

The Adventures of Tintin

‘The Adventures of Tintin’ Teaser Has A Whole Mess Of Danger

Trailers for Tintin have come out and most audiences are still confused. It’s motion capture, it’s Belgian, but having played a character in it, Pegg says it’s all quite noticeably a Steven Spielberg movie.

“Yes, because you can feel his DNA in the way that it moves. I’ve seen some of it. Motion capture is more like directing live action because you are dealing with a 3D environment. You’re moving the camera around a 3D environment, but that 3D environment is digital. It’s not real. All the way that the camera moves, it’s Steven and you definitely feel that.”

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Suffice it to stay, Pegg has a bigger part in the sequel to Mission: Impossible III. “I had two days on Mission: Impossible III. That was it. I did seven months on the fourth one so yeah, I go back.”

Rumor has it Jeremy Renner is positioned to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise, but Pegg says it’s ambiguous. “It has been bandied around. Looking at the film as it is, I don’t think so. It’s anyone’s guess really. It certainly sets up a new IMF agent who can return and who is an Ethan level player. We’ll see. I honestly don’t know. It’s one of those things that there’s a lot of life in that story because it is a kind of Bond thing that you can just have iterations of different adventures and different teams and stuff. I can’t say really. I don’t want to give anything away. It’s another Mission: Impossible but it’s an evolution I think. There’s some great character stuff in it. There’s some incredible action.”

On the photos of Tom Cruise scaling the Burj Khalifa in Dubai:

Pegg got an even better view of that stunt. “He leapt out the window of the tallest building in the world and looked back in at all of us, this huge sh*t eating grin on his face. The guy’s a machine. It’s insane. He was like running like a spider along the side of the Burj Khalifa. I’m glad that was seen because I wouldn’t want anyone to watch the movie and not know he did that because he did do that. I was just feeling sick saying that. What are you doing you crazy bastard? Yeah, it’s going to be good.”

Pauls

‘Paul’ Looks Like A Kids Film With Lots Of F-Bombs

Pegg and Nick Frost actually have an idea for a sequel to Paul too. Like that other classic alien franchise, the sequel will just be plural. “Nick and I have this idea that we had out on the way to Area 51 that was really funny. It was like oh, this could be great. It would cost an absolute fucking fortune. If it involved more than on Paul, it would mean that we’d have to have twice that budget again. The idea was it was called Pauls. Again, it was like From Dusk Til Shaun, that title is so good we have to make that film.”

A big motivation for Pegg to do another Paul was he’d like to recreate the experience of traveling the country and working with American comedians in supporting roles. He promises he’ll still write a good script though. “I do have enough principles to stop me doing that just for the sake of it. It would have to be a good idea, but I’ve just been thinking about that recently. You ask yourself why you do what you do. It’s not for the reward. It’s for the experience, not the product.”

That’d be nice.

Attack The Block is the directorial debut of Joe Cornish.

The movie about teens gangs fending off alien invaders on the streets of London was the hit of the festival.

Attack the Block was the hot ticket of SXSW. Edgar Wright’s name must have let people know that it’s something special. He produced it for first-time feature director Joe Cornish. A lot of people didn’t even get into the SXSW screenings so they’ll be waiting for it’s theatrical release, which so far is only secure in the UK for May.

Cornish’s film has teen street gangs fending off alien invaders on the streets of London’s hoods. Cornish met some press for breakfast at the Four Seasons in Austin to fill in the people who missed the film, and further excite the new fanboys who discovered it in Austin.

Territory is not just a British thing:

Joe Cornish: The issue of territorialism is a very big thing, especially with these young gangs in the UK and it’s not something I would want to encourage or be frivolous about because it’s a serious thing. One of the messages in the film is that these creatures are extremely territorial and they will kill and be greedy and selfish. They will take their territory. One of the bad things I wanted to express with the monsters is territorialism. Even though it’s never said, hopefully you understand that that’s one of the bad things and that’s kind of stupid. You know kids in the UK and I’m sure everywhere in the world, kill each other over territory in a meaningless way. That’s something I would want to highlight.

The monsters are metaphors for the real street kids:

JC: One of the ideas of the film is kids like that are demonized in the U.K. and they’re called feral and amoral so I wanted to make a monster that, if you took all the words that people call those kids in the press, I wanted to turn them into a monster, set that monster against the kids and bring the humanity out of the kids. It’s just to see the humanity in people really. I don’t think it’s a particularly new message, that there might be good in somebody who maybe has done bad.

But antiheroes are cool:

JC: It’s a trope that has slightly vanished from cinema because people are a bit frightened of antiheroes now. People are very keen to make the protagonist sympathetic in the first act, give him a wife and kids, have the kid be kidnapped. You get that in notes a lot, how is the audience going to invest in it? Some of my favorite films, Snake Plissken, Assault on Precinct 13, you’re not sure where you stand with the protagonist. For me that’s kinda cool. That’s what I wanted to try and do.

Cornish cast real kids with little acting experience:

JC: They’re all 16 and over. A lot of them are from backgrounds not entirely dissimilar to the kids in the story. A lot of them are local to the area where we shot it. In terms of working with them, it was an absolute joy. The arc of the movie is that you start with these masked kids. You don’t know how old they are. You don’t know who they are, what color they are. They’re just bandits. As the story progresses, you unpeel the layers and hopefully give them dimension and stuff. That happened a little on the set as well. You could see the talent but they were socially a bit shy. They wouldn’t make eye contact, they tried to be tough, tried not to let themselves be vulnerable but the beautiful thing was as we shot, they just became more and more relaxed. By the time we were through the rehearsal period even they were like friends.

And they reflect the multi-ethnic streets of the U.K.:

JC: I don’t actually think race has a huge amount to do with my film. I really wanted to give a young black actor the lead role. as someone who lives in a very mixed urban area, I don’t see it reflected on the screen very much. Apart from that, they were kind of interchangeable. I certainly didn’t cast with color in mind.

He’s bringing back hardcore movies for kids:

JC: We were kids at possibly the best time, not just for children’s cinema but what Lucas and Spielberg were doing wasn’t children’s cinema as we perceive it now. It wasn’t like four quadrant box ticking. Talk about penis breath in E.T., talk about Indiana Jones saying sh*t on the bridge. I wasn’t allowed to see Scanners yet I could see Raiders as a kid, so we just had this amazing period. For me, I think maybe it’s people of that generation just working that sh*t through because it had such an affect on us. Plus a feeling of the absence of that energy from contemporary cinema. Contemporary cinema’s become so polarized. It’s either for children or it’s an extremely sadistic horror. That sense where the energies were mixed up a bit and you didn’t know quite what you were going to get that was there in all of Lucas’s and Spielberg’s stuff has gone a bit.

This is how angry Edgar Wright gets when you ask him to do more zombie projects.

Frank Darabont understands how zombie synergies work. Take one of the hottest shows on TV and leverage that show with a director that cut his teeth on a beloved zombie film (Shaun of the Dead) that would best be described as “cult” if it wasn’t so damn popular. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen. Wright conveyed to Collider that he was honored to be asked to helm an episode of”The Walking Dead,” but weaseled his way out of the opportunity by claiming that “I wouldn’t wanna be the guy that comes in and fucks it up.” We wouldn’t want that either, Edgar, but that probably wouldn’t happen (though this pairing seems a little too “on the nose” to really get excited about). There’s a decent chance that Wright didn’t want to be thought of as a “zombie guy,” so he’s taking his talents to other projects, which is pretty understandable. Also, Wright doesn’t strike me as much of a hired gun, and “The Walking Dead” will always be Darabont’s baby. It’s interesting to see Darabont reaching out to others in the wake of some criticism over season 1. Whether or not this is indicative of a genuine effort to get some new blood on the show or just a marketing gimmick remains to be seen, but either way, when you plant the seed of Edgar Wright working on a zombie show, you’ll accomplish the latter incidentally.

Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World has resumed work on his screenplay for a movie about the under-appreciated Marvel super-hero Ant-Man after a break of more than two years.

Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World has resumed work on his screenplay for a movie about the under-appreciated Marvel super-hero Ant-Man after break of more than two years. Much of that break was spent on Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, another comic book property, albeit not one as big or franchise-driven as a Marvel super-hero. Although as Marvel super-heroes go, Ant-Man is going to be pretty…small (GET IT EVERYONE??). Wright: “This one’s not about about the urgency of summer tentpoles and things going into production without a script. It’s slightly different than that. ” Anyway, funny super-heroes are in now, what with Iron Man and everything, especially if The Green Hornet does well financially this week. The question now is how involved Wright’s Ant-Man will be in that whole overarching mythology thing Marvel is trying — maybe Scott Pilgrim will get to joi The Avengers eventually?

As a recent and thoroughly wide-eyed convert to the cultish Church of Pilgrim, I was no doubt predisposed to drool over every moment of the Scott Pilgrim vs The World DVD bonus features. And drool I did, nearly the whole way through. Come to think of it, there might be something wrong with my mouth.

From concept sketches to storyboards to a generous offering of gags, bloopers, and deleted scenes that kept me smiling from start to finish, this first half of the production alone was a worthy supplement to the most original film of the year, and an enticing reason to swap out your Pilgrim torrent for a good old-fashioned store-bought copy.

The features only get better once you dive into the commentary — four separate rounds of discussion including remarks from Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman, director Edgar Wright, and creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Not typically one to sit through two hours of actors and filmmakers talking about themselves, I was genuinely impressed by the level of discussion here; the commentary revealed minute details about the film’s rich visuals that I hadn’t noticed before and nifty factoids about the oh-so-indie musical score, while delving deep into the process behind transplanting the world of Scott Pilgrim from page to screen.

Whether you’re a fan of the film or a staunch and exceedingly hip member of the “the comic book was better than the movie” camp, this is a collection of features worth checking out.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World releases on DVD and Blu-ray November 9th.

Some people are sick of Michael Cera's schtick. Then again, some people are sick of Will Ferrell's schtick and The Other Guys still banked 35 million bones this weekend. Obviously quirky character traits grow weary with time (just ask my girlfriend), but I'm not yet bothered by Cera's repeat bumbling everyman performances. If you're on the fence about seeing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World because you don't think you can stand Cera anymore, you should know he gets the sh*t beaten out of him in it.
Universal released the first of what director Edgar Wright tweeted would be seven Scott Pilgrim vs The World featurettes. This one nicely eases you into the series by focusing on the world of Scott Pilgrim through insight by Wright, Michael Cera, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. I personally don't want to watch anymore clips about the film because I'd like to still be surprised when I actually see the film. Regardless, the new footage got me even more jazzed, so I guess it was worth it. You win this time, studio marketing division. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World POWS! into theaters August 13. Check out the featurette after the jump...

I personally don’t want to watch anymore clips about the film because I’d like to still be surprised when I actually see the film. Regardless, the new footage got me even more jazzed, so I guess it was worth it. You win this time, studio marketing division.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World POWS! into theaters August 13.

Edgar Wright considers casting Vin Diesel. For those not in the know and too lazy to look it up, Ant-Man is a scientist who shrinks down to tiny size and controls the thoughts of ants via a special helmet. Yeah. Pretty dumb. So why is Edgar Wright making a movie about this? He undoubtedly has a golden touch, but can he turn Ant-Man into something watchable? Turns out, he hasn't given it too much thought.I haven’t actually started the second draft yet–I’m not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.Word on the street is that Wright's first draft is amazing. I still think it's pretty dumb. Ants are really non-threatening unless you're planning to commit some kind of picnic-based heist. Or if you're lackadaisical when it comes to guarding your pee hole. And if that's the case, maybe you're just not well-suited for a life of crime. (Box Office Magazine)

The international trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has HIT!!!! the Interwebz. The new footage and campy banter from Superman guy and "Arrested Development" Anne (Cowinkidink Alert!: She's Michael Cera's girlfriend on the show) are increasing my interest in this film. Not quite sure why we need to see a graphic representation of Scott Pilgrim's bladder being emptied, but I'll go with it. Perhaps in a sequel down the road we'll be privy to his prostate bar, a function those Flomax geniuses are probably toiling away on at this very moment. Check out the trailer after the jump...

I haven't been too impressed by what we've seen from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, but I'll admit I may have been too quick to judge. In this first clip we see Michael Cera attempt to square-off against Chris Evans's action-star Lucas Lee. Since Lee is a Hollywood A-lister, Pilgrim will have to contend with his team of stunt doubles first. It's a pretty clever clip and the fight choreography is pretty slick. Plus, it fulfills my post-Nick and Norah desire to see Michael Cera cracked over the head with a skateboard by a gang of Amish. Edgar Wright is a genius!Check out the clip after the jump...

If only real life offered 1-Ups... The Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Facebook page hit 100,000 fans at 1:30am this morning, and that means the full length trailer has been unleashed. A big thank you goes out to all the drunks who stumbled back to their homes last night and stamped barbeque sauce on their keyboards as they eagerly "Liked" the fan page. Scott Pilgrim, based off the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley, follows a guy (Michael Cera) as he tries to defeat a girl's (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to make shiz official with her. His world becomes a big video game full of 1-Ups, vibrant color trails, and onamonapias. According to the film's tag, the studio wants you to believe that it's on like Donkey Kong, but unless one of the ex-boyfriends is a giant ape in a dress tie, I'm going to have to insist that it's on like something else. Check out the trailer after the jump. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World BAMS! into theaters August 13, 2010.

The Scott Pilgrim vs. The World teaser is finally here, and it is marvelous, my darlings. Edgar Wright's kinetic style is abundently clear throughout every frame, split-screen, and smash cut. My only grievance is that Michael Cera can't seem to stop playing Michael Cera. He kicks serious ass in this film, but in between the comic strip infused action sequences Michael still shyly tries to grasp the concepts that Mary Elizabeth Winstead lays out for him. I'll be rooting for him all the same because God knows Chris Evans needs to be taken down a peg after securing Captain America, but I hope he erases the elipsies from his speech pattern by the end of the film, a.k.a. grows some balls.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World follows Michael Cera as he battles the seven evil ex-boyfriends to win the girl of his dreams. That's a weird approach to romance. "Oh hey. I beat the crap out of all your exes. You're mine now." [honks boob]Anyway, the teaser poster premiered at ShoWest and it depicts Michael Cera hunched over a bass guitar like a homeless person hunched over their own crippling hunger. Either that or he's just been kicked in the nuts. Hmmm, Michael Cera Kicked in the Nuts. After sitting through Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Paper Heart, that's a movie I'd pay to see. (ComingSoon)

As you can see, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World takes place on the set of America Gladiators. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jason Schwartzman stand stoically as judges in the far background, while a dude breakdances in the middle ground. I'm just not sure if they're judging the dancing or Michael Cera's lightsaber skills. Maybe the guy taking a dump near the edge of frame knows. Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is about a Michael Cera type character played by Michael Cera who has to fight the seven evil ex-boyfriends of the girl of his dreams. That's a lot of effort to bag some tail. She better be really bendy. (via /Film)
