If you’re the type of person who complains about your DVR filling up, our old friend Tivo would like to remind you that a) they still exist, and b) they can solve that problem by offering up their $5,000 DVR. It’s appropriately called the Tivo Mega, and it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Just kidding. If your life was capable of being changed by a giant DVR, then it wasn’t much in the first place.

Short of owning a TV network, I’m not sure why someone would want this thing. Most every series is available on Netflix, Hulu, or one of the other bastard services, and $5,000 pays for like 40 years of subscription. Seriously.

BUT, if you’re one of those people who likes to have everything at their very fingertips, and doesn’t like pirating stuff, then this is probably the right device for you.

Note: If you’re DVRing in HD, you can only store 4,000 hours of shows, not the 26,000 mentioned in the title. What a crock.

With the dearth of TV providers out there (Time Warner, Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network), it seems like we’re stuck picking from the lesser of so many evils. We can agree on that.

We can also all agree that Google is pretty great. Which is why it’s my pleasure to inform everyone (that hasn’t read any business magazines over the past month or so) that Google is getting into the TV and ISP business. They’re giving it a go first in Kansas City, then, hopefully, the rest of the US, by laying down their own fiber optic cables that link straight up to their massive server operation in Iowa.

Those servers will act as a gigantic DVR for users, as well as a conduit for streaming live TV and Internet service. Yay!

With the complacency and shitty customer service provided by the current cartel, it’s very nice to hear that a new, non-compromised company will be stepping in to change the game or at least keep the other guys working for our business.

Plus, it’s just a matter of time before Google lets us download cute, furry puppies right into our houses. Double yay!

When is a hit show possibly not a hit show? When everyone is DVRing it.

Some folks are saying Conan O’Brien‘s ratings aren’t very good, because he’s getting beaten regularly by rivals Jay Leno and David Letterman. First, please take a moment to “boo” the name Jay Leno out loud in front of your computer.

Done? Good. Now, here’s the problem: “Conan” on TBS seems to always have less total viewers and often less 18-49 year old viewers than the shows of his older counterparts. However, thanks to newfangled TV gadgets, we now have “plus 7 ratings,” which counts viewers who watch a show on DVR up to 7 days after recording it (and has nothing to do with sneaking way too many of your friends into a party).

If you factor in O’Brien’s plus 7, as his William Morris Endeavor agent Rick Rosen said he does in a recent statement, then Coco is a Hit-O.

“The ratings system needs to catch up to the viewing patterns and the world,” declared Rosen, adding: “To me it’s the most significant challenge to television today.”

Conan‘s audience is younger too. On average, O’Brien’s audience is a Twitter-Trackin’ 34, compared to Leno and Letterman’s Twitter-Fearin’ mid-50s. So maybe “size” isn’t everything. Being young and gangly counts for something too. (Hollywood Reporter)
