There are a lot of Nicolas Cage haters out there, and we tried to get some answers for them when we interviewed Cage over the holidays. The press conference for his latest film, Drive Angry, revealed more than we could have imagined. First of all, he admits he’s not looking to win another Oscar.

“As you might’ve guessed, I don’t really use it as a criteria to choose my movies,” Cage said. “My interests are a pretty acquired taste that I have. The movies that I enjoy watching personally are movies that really frustrate my wife and that you can’t really get on Amazon. So it’s an interest in Roger Corman movies and the midnight movies. I like Ray Harryhausen.”

He picks the movies that won’t hold him back, not the most “respectable” movies, on purpose. “I like fantasy. I like horror, science fiction because I can get avant-garde with those performances in those movies. Inherently, I’m able to be abstract and “modern art” if you will because the movies are inherently out there and I can still connect with audiences. I can’t do that in down and dirty dramas. I can’t do that unless I go outsid the box. Or, if I’m playing a character who’s on drugs like Bad Lieutenant, then I can get pretty out there. Otherwise I have to look at supernatural movies or science fiction movies to get more avant-garde.”

Some have called Cage’s style Mega-acting. Some describe it with a string of obscenities. Taking what we could glean from the history of De Niro and Olivier, Cage came up with his own method. “I’d developed my own style and process and school of acting which is called Nouveau Shamanic. That’s the new style of acting and at some point I’ll have to write a book.”

If the idea of Nic Cage as a Shaman scares you, maybe you should face your fear like he did making Drive Angry. “I was also uncomfortable with the script and I was just going through this phase in my life where I learned that if something makes you uncomfortable or fearful in any way, within reason that’s exactly what you should confront. So it was an experiment on that level that I should confront the violence in the movie because it had been a long time since I’d made a violent movie.”

There are simpler criteria too. This one explains both Drive Angry and Season of the Witch. “Initially what I was attracted to was the idea that I was going to get my eye shot out. The movie Season of the Witch, I wanted to get my eye shot out with a bow and arrow, and the producers didn’t go for it. We never really got there. Even though they said they would, it never really happened. So when Patrick Lussier said to me and just handed to me on a silver platter you’re going to get your eye shot out in a movie, I don’t know why but I just immediately said yes, I’m in because it was something that I wanted to do. It’s as simple as that.”

He also wanted to drink beer out of a human skull, and he does in Drive Angry. “I wanted to see if there could be any way in my presentation of the skull to make the beer slosh out of the eye in such a way that my cup runneth over and have it look really inviting and appetizing and make people in the audience go, ‘Wow, I know it sounds crazy, but I’d really kind of like to drink beer from someone’s skull right now.’ That was the challenge.”

Still, Cage didn’t just phone it in after the eye and the skull bits. He thought a lot about who Milton, a man escaped from hell, would be. “When he was alive, he was probably listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Buddy Holly, but after he broke out of hell, it’s all just wind chimes and Ravi Shankhar. No lyrics. Absolutely no lyrics.”

Next up for Cage is a return to comic books in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. The Neveldine/Taylor sequel/reboot gave him an angle to try Johnny Blaze again. “We got up to some stuff as Ghost Rider that the two of us designed together that I think is really going to mess with people’s minds. It’s not going to be like any other comic book movie you’ve seen. We keep stressing that Ghost Rider is the most supernatural superhero of all and that’s really going to come out in this movie.”

Drive Angry is sleazy, vulgar and crass. The execution is seriously misguided, but I like the idea of it enough to carry me through. I’m like that, I’d rather see a cool idea fail than see something typical succeed technically. Offensive is better than mediocre.

Milton (Nicolas Cage) blasts some bad guys on the road in graphically 3D shots, so immediately you know it’s that kind of movie. Cage owns the screen with his Elvis-y swagger and hints of his Peggy Sue Got Married voice. When he sips coffee in between kisses he stole from a stranger, that’s action hero cool. He gets a wound to his eye, just wears sunglasses over it.

However, I would say that even in an exploitation movie, beating up a naked woman and throwing her onto the street is not okay. Even when the person delivering the beating is also a woman, that’s not okay. I’m all for outrageous, but you can just sense the tone is malicious there. And making the female lead a tough girl doesn’t make it feminist. It’s still just a male fantasy of the tough cookie.

Milton hooks up with the tough cookie Piper (Amber Heard), another waitress from that vulgar diner who’s leaving her cheating fiancé in his car. (The mistress is the recipient of above beating.) The Accountant (William Fichtner) is following Milton and you quickly get the hint that neither Milton nor the Accountant are from an earthly plane.

Between Milton and The Accountant you have spiritual characters talking shop. The film may not be mature enough to give them anything worthwhile to do, but I like the idea of having them in the movie. The script does a good job of discussing their business vaguely, and both actors bring a certain unreality to their body movements.

I was offended on behalf of Michael Davis when the film threw in a sex scene shootout, but it’ll be okay. Anyone who Googles “naked sex gunfight” will find the scene from Shoot ‘Em Up and see it’s way better. The difference is Davis clearly loves women and protects her in that scene. Drive Angry director Patrick Lussier uses her as a prop.

Drive Angry make Paul Verhoeven look like a feminist. There are lots more naked women but the film manages to make nudity ugly with the cultists jiggling in the background and the lover grinding on a fully clothed Milton. All the dialogue is tits, dick, balls in a gross, trailer park-y tone. Even the soundtrack sings about pussy in “Fuck the Pain Away.”

The pursuit is simple. Jonah King (Billy Burke) killed Milton’s daughter and wants to sacrifice his baby granddaughter to Satan. Yet the plot can’t handle it. The Accountant enlists two cops for absolutely no reason and they serve no purpose in the story. The action provides no fast-paced thrills. It’s all slow motion violence for 3D. Cage sells the gun poses but there’s no flow.

Just keep telling yourself, “Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage, Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage.” It’s like a whole movie of the bear suit scene from Wicker Man.

All the best directors work in the nude.

While they are already slated to shit all over your memories of Hellraiser and Halloween, Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer don’t show any signs that they will stop churning out unwatchable horror flicks. The team that gave audiences a headache with My Bloody Valentine 3D and Drive Angry 3D have two more in the pipeline.

First, there’s Circle of Silencea departure from the horror genre for the duo that centers around the still-unsolved real life murder of a police officer murdered in a Harlem mosque back in 1972. It’s filled with political intrigue that is sure to really pop in 3D.

Then there’s Already Dead (aka In Darkness), which I can’t help but be curious about. It’s a vampire movie/courtroom thriller. I like to imagine a courtroom full of all the vampire archetypes. Edward Cullen could play an intrepid young lawyer trying to shake a confession out of Gary Oldman‘s butt-haired dracula, which of course will lead to Dracula shouting, “You can’t handle the tooth!” Yeah, you groan now but I wouldn’t put it past these guys. They did think it would pass as funny to have characters named “Jason” and “Freddy” in My Bloody Valentine. (The Playlist)

Here’s a newer, dirtier look at OSCAR WINNER (remember?) Nicholas Cage‘s Drive Angry 3D, the actor’s latest insane collection of explosions, awkward sex scenes, and ultraviolence masquerading as a film. I mean, seriously, I could probably write in binary for three paragraphs and you’d still watch the embedded video. What’s the point of trying to sell you on the plot, which is inconsequential, or the cast, which, while boasting the talents of William Fitchner and Amber Heard, are just window dressing that hang around while things explode, curse, die, and have sex around them. The film opens on February 25th, and if it’s anything like this trailer, it’s going to be totally insane. (The Playlist)

Normally I wouldn’t be a proponent of watching Nicolas Cage bang anything but this clip from Drive Angry 3D has some redeeming factors.

For one, Nic Cage remains clothed. So that’s a relief. Why? Because he never disrobes before a gunfight. Note: all the best gunfighters don’t disrobe before their gunfights. That’s like Gunfighting 101.

The gunfight itself isn’t all that spectacular and pales compared to the gunfighting while humping scene in Shoot ‘Em Up. What does make this clip awesome however is the fact that Nic Cage’s character smokes a cigar and chugs whiskey while in the act. That’s baller right there. Also, boobs. The boobs help make this clip awesome too. (via Horror Yearbook)

How you gonna mess with Nic Cage‘s hair like that?!

Summit has dropped the trailer for Drive Angry 3D. Patrick Lussier directs Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, and David Morse in what looks like another Ghost Rider with a car standing in for a chopper.

Cage plays a guy who breaks out of hell (what? how? what?) to get revenge against the cult that killed his daughter and took her baby. William Fichtner is the Devil‘s right-hand-man sent to bring him back. I gotta say, it’s perfect casting with Fichtner. There’s something always twitchy with that guy. I could totally see him doing Satan’s bidding.

Drive Angry 3D crashes into theaters February 11, 2011.

Check out the trailer after the jump…
