Drew Goddard's script is just too awesome to shoot.

Now that he’s Mr. Big Shot Oscar Nominee Guy, Steven Spielberg isn’t as enthused as he once was to make a movie about killer robots. Thus Robopocalypse will not be his directorial follow-up to Lincoln.

The indefinite postponement is attributed to the script by Drew Goddard. A spokesman for Spielberg says the film is “too important” and the script is “just not ready.” The spokesman also adds that the current version is just too expensive to shoot causing them to rethink what is achievable.

Too expensive for Spielberg? That sounds awesome!! If you’re going to make a movie about killer robots enslaving humanity with Chris Hemsworth attached to star, it sure as fudge had better be too expensive. That’s the kind of stuff audiences like to see. Do this one and take the hit. He owes us after those Transformers movies.
Is it possible for a Joss Whedon project to get a sequel?

Looks like heavy delays won’t be enough to keep The Cabin in the Woods down. After sitting on MGM‘s shelf for two-and-a-half years while the studio worked out their money issues, the horror-skewing horror film just kicked off SXSW with a bang. Reviews are in and the buzz is strong. Naturally, it‘s time to talk sequel. Or sequels, seeing as it is a horror movie. Kind of.

Co-writer Joss Whedon spoke to the idea, “Drew [Goddard] and I, we have no artistic integrity. We also built that world so grandly in our minds that we often do go, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could do the bit where …’ There’s definitely more to be told in that story, but right now we’re both very fixated on, ‘We hope somebody likes it, and of course pays to come see it.’ But there’s always a bridge there to cross. We definitely didn’t come into this going, ‘Oh, we have an idea for a franchise.’ We came in going, ‘We have three acts.’ Which is more than any writer usually gets. That’s a gift.”

We can see what all of the secrecy is about when the film opens in theaters on April 13th. But after that, Whedon is encouraged to never keep secrets from us again. If we can’t have trust then we can’t have us. (Cinema Blend)

Nine gazillion years later, the film finally sees release.

A long, winding road has brought us here to the trailer for The Cabin in the Woods. The Joss Whedon-scripted, Drew Goddard-directed horror film suffered from many delays as cash-strapped MGM was busy pulling themselves back together. But don’t let those push-backs speak as a criticism to the quality of the film. Actually, it looks like it was worth the wait.

Chris Hemsworth (in a pre-Thor role), Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Kristen Connolly, and Anna Hutchison star as five friends who travel into the woods to party in a rustic cabin. You think you know the story from there, but it looks like a lot more is happening. Rather than your typical slasher or monster attack, it’s actually some sort of shadowy organization holed up in a control room calling the shots, activating force-fields and creatures sent after the young campers. It’s ike The Truman Show, except in this case, Ed Harris is into torture porn.
