As he did in Oblivion, Tom Cruise is once again battling a total sucky future in Edge of Tomorrow. While Cruise hopes he is not doomed to repeat that film’s performance at the box office, he is seemingly doomed to repeat this one mech-suit battle against alien squid robots. Awaking after each time he is murdered by those things from The Matrix, Cruise’s character must “train” himself to survive and eventually win the war and probably totally bang Emily Blunt.

Sometimes you just wanna go start your weekend but then pictures get released of Tom Cruise dressed in crazy mechanized armor. Like today for instance.

This picture was released as a first look at Doug Liman‘s All You Need Is Kill. Cruise plays a soldier fighting in a war with aliens who finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in the battle, though he becomes better skilled along the way. I really hope there’s a scene where he says gesundheit to someone before they sneeze.

All in all, it’s a pretty sweet mech suit and I’m interested to see what else Doug Liman has in store. Perhaps Bill Paxton with a flame-thrower that has a chainsaw bayonet? That’d be cool.

Behold. Scientology‘s greatest weapon.

With two science fiction projects crammed in his pipeline, Tom Cruise has reportedly added a third. While he’s already shooting Oblivion with Joseph Kosinski before moving right into Doug Liman‘s We Mortals Are, he’s now attached to Our Name Is Adam.

Plot details for Our Name Is Adam are currently under wraps but the title infers it will deal with cloning and biblical metaphors. Either that, or it could be a docu-series that follows what happens when Adam West and Adam Lambert are forced to move into a house and have their lives taped. Which I would so watch by the way. I can’t tell if All You Need Is Kill is an awesomely bad title for a film, or an awesomely awesome title. It really doesn’t matter, because either way, it’s going to be made now that Tom Cruise has agreed to star in the project.

The film offers a soldier in battle, repeatedly living out the day of his death, and over time becoming, a better soldier. Doug Liman, who directed the first two Bournes (and Swingers!), will be directing the project. It’s anticipated that filming will start in fall of next year.

Aside from his weird turn in next summer‘s Rock of Ages, it seems that Tom Cruise has been pursuing more action-oriented fare recently, filming One Shot where he will play serial badass Jack Reacher, and signing on for Joseph Kasinski’s sci-fi film Oblivion.

That’s why they call it “acting,” I guess.

Doug Liman directed the pilot of MTV’s upcoming show I Just Want My Pants Back. The title comes from the main character’s one night stand where the woman wore his pants home, but left him a fake number so he could never contact her again. The director of Swingers tackles a whole ensemble of characters dealing with modern dating in New York.

At MTV’s cocktail party for the Television Critics Association, Liman schmoozed with the hot young stars of his own and other MTV shows. I was the old guy who still remembers leaving six messages on an answering machine, so maybe Pants will give me some new pointers. The show is currently in production aiming for a 2012 airdate.

Q: I was at the right age when Swingers came out. Actually, I’m still in that place, but how has the dating game changed since Swingers?

Doug Liman: Well, I’m still single so unfortunately I’ve been tracking it all these years. The storylines in Pants Back are completely universal. They haven’t really changed but the specific characters that David Rosen have written have a specific approach to dating that I just love. It’s completely infectious.

Q: What would be the equivalent of the six date rule now?

DL: It’s all about texting. When you text, when you don’t text. Maybe the technology has changed but the strategy hasn’t changed at all. Kim [Shaw’s character] spends most of the season dealing with an on again, off again relationship that plays out a lot through whether she does or does not text, how long she waits to text.

Q: That was a huge hurdle for me. I hated texting until I met a really nice girl who texted cute and funny things. Now I like it.

DL: It’s all about sexting now.

Q: I never got into that, but how do you portray texting on screen? Isn’t it obnoxious when characters talk what they’re typing because the camera needs to hear it?

DL: No, like Swingers, what’s really at stake is whether you are or are not texting, whether you are or are not making the other person wait. So it’s not actually the content of the text, which would be annoying. You have to speak it out loud or cut to an insert. Since we’re operating on the more primal level of did the guy text you or didn’t he text you, or if he did text you, how long do you wait to text him back, that doesn’t play out between somebody and their phone. That plays out between friends.

Q: Would swing dancing still impress someone today? Would there even be anywhere you could go to do that?

DL: Lincoln Center during the summer does it, but that’s Manhattan so that’s for a different age group. People in their 20s that live in Brooklyn and more of the fringe Brooklyn like Greenpoint or Bushwick, I’m not seeing any signs of swing dancing in those places. Swing dancing happened to be the thing of the moment when I was doing Swingers. There’s other things going on in Greenpoint that these characters are participating in that are of the moment.

Q: What are some aspects of Swingers that still work today?

DL: Well, Swingers still works today because it’s a universal story and it has amazing characters. Films with characters like the ones Jon Favreau wrote are timeless.

Q: They still call right after you’re not interested in them anymore.

DL: That is unfortunately true.

Q: As a producer, how are things going on The Bourne Legacy?

DL: Pretty great. We start shooting this fall.

Q: I’m excited about it, but I kind of wish Matt Damon would still be willing to continue Jason Bourne. Why couldn’t Jeremy Renner still be playing Jason Bourne?

DL: Well, Jason Bourne has completed his arc. The franchise from its very inception was a character-driven action franchise. Unlike James Bond, which is sort of an action driven franchise, it’s character driven and the character has completed their arc. If it were a TV series, we would have slowed down the arc so you could build 50 episodes out of it. But it wasn’t a TV series. It was a movie so he’s got to complete his arc.

Q: But as fans, we trust you and Tony Gilroy to come up with another great issue for Jason Bourne. Like life, more things still happen to him.

DL: But the most interesting thing happened and was resolved. I mean, Robert Ludlum in the original novel completed his arc in the first book and did what you said, reset him in the second book, completed his arc, then reset him again and completed him in the third book. But it’s a little gimmicky.

Q: What is the issue for the new legacy?

DL: I can’t even tell you about the character.

Q: You have an amazing cast for Luna. What do Chris Evans, Andrew Garfield, Zoe Saldana and Megan Fox get to do?

DL: I’m not really talking about it yet other than it’s a heist in outer space.

Q: Well, I know you usually have an interesting subtext to your movies. You’ve said that The Bourne Identity started from wanting to address Iran Contra. What is the subtext of the space heist?

DL: It’s actually a companion piece to Fair Game so I very much have those same lofty ideals that have permeated all my films to date. While Fair Game was dealing with America at one of its low points, my outer space heist film ultimately celebrates America at one of its high points.

Q: Is it a period piece in the space program?

DL: No, it’s present day.

Q: So with NASA ending the shuttle program, how does that affect your story?

DL: That is the backdrop against which the heist takes place.

Now that Doug Liman has been granted permission to travel to the moon, he’s searching for A-list actors to join him.

Paramount has fast-tracked and financed Doug Liman’s Luna, the story of some rogue scientists who build a makeshift rocket to retrieve an energy source located on the moon. The project has been in the works for years, but couldn’t find financing until now courtesy of Skydance and New Regency. Liman and Jon Hamburg wrote the original draft of the script, though it’s been reworked several times since then. The project is now poised to be Liman’s next, so the question of casting has quickly become a priority.

The shortlist of male leads includes Bradley Cooper, Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine, all of whom have starred in blockbusters. (I’m considering Speed Racer a blockbuster for the sake of Hirsch’s feelings.) No talks are underway, but expect that list to get culled quickly. As for the fairer sex, producers are looking to Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde. So they’re going with “young hot women.” Interesting approach.

Ever since Darren Aronofsky ditched The Wolverine, it’s only been a question of who will step up to take his place. And now, in a truly newsworthy development, we know exactly who it will be – one of these eight guys: Jose Padilha, Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), Justin Lin (Fast Five), Gavin O’Connor, James Mangold (Knight and Day) and Gary Shore.

It’s possible that all these names aren’t familiar to you. For one, Gary Shore is mostly a commercial director. The rest are directors of a blend of relatively anonymous action movies like Knight and Day, and art films like Never Let Me Go. It remains to be seen which direction FOX will go in – but no matter which way they go, it’ll probably be better than the first Wolverine movie. (Variety)

If director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has his way, he’ll send Megan Fox, Rosario Dawson, Eva Mendes, Rachel McAdams, Olivia Wilde or Zoe Saldana to Moon. Perhaps to test the effects of zero gravity on my favorite boobs? Just leave a girl or two on Earth for us all to masturbate to, Liman.

The director is finally dusting off his sci-fi caper film, now with the clever name “untitled Moon project,” which has been lingering at Paramount after a jump from Dreamworks in 2007. After rewrites by top screenwriters like Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes), and now that Liman’s All You Need Is Kill is getting killed for lack of momentum at Warner Bros, Liman is ready to round up actors for a good old fashioned space heist.

For the male lead, Limon’s met with Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine. Of course, Chris Pine has spaceperience (space experience) as Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk, but I’m sure Spider-Man‘s been to space a bunch of times. No biggie. Jake Gyllenhaal used to be attached, but he ain’t no more.

Here’s the plot:

The story centers on a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal — or in this case, kidnap — is an ex-NASA employee.

You’ve got to hand it to them – if you’re a criminal, what better place is there to escape to than the moon? It’s very unlikely the police will follow you in a squad rocket. Then again, how do you inconspicuously re-enter the earth’s atmosphere? (Hollywood Reporter)

Doug Liman will be direct a movie about an international man of intrigue that isn’t named “Bourne.” Rather, he has been tapped by Rob Reiner and Alan Greisman to direct a biopic on Morris Abraham Cohen, widely known as simply “Two-gun Cohen.” In the 1920′s, Cohen was a British conman who travelled to China to eventually to protect the imperial leader and assist in training his armies.

As one could guess from this description, the producers are excited that subject matter has essentially written itself. So confident are they that they are cool entrusting this undoubtedly high-budget period piece into the hands of a first-time screenwriter in Matt Brown.

Liman is eager to make this a truly international film, working with Chinese financiers and shooting on location in China. This could present problems as far as censorship goes, and they still may or may not be miffed over all that spy plane unpleasantness. So don’t be surprised if the working title of this project is The Majesty of the Chinese Empire Invigorates Impressionable Westerner, or something like that. (/Film)

Fair Game seems to take the trappings of the spy movies we love and apply them to the real life situation of Valerie Plame. That doesn’t make it feel any less like a standard docudrama though. This is still an issue movie that doesn’t offer any broader context than the issue it’s reporting.

Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts) goes on spy missions. She has contacts and assets and covers. She knows her character details, so you can’t trip her up. The mission just happens to be discovering Iraq’s WMD program. We know how this turns out and there are no kick fights with Plame in a fancy dress or aerial stunts where Plame’s parachute opens at the last possible minute.

The film portrays Plame and Joe Wilson (Sean Penn) well. They have smart banter, not witty like scripted dialogue, but they intuit each other like a good marriage would allow. The strain on their marriage has stakes because Joe really misses his wife. Then when it becomes an issue of national importance, it’s also a matter of private coping.

The film is pretty on the nose even before the leak exposes Plame. She explains her position on lying. The Wilsons have friends who believe the media hype about WMDs and Joe just can’t bite his tongue, but Valerie has to because she can’t share what she knows. I mean, I know this is important but do you have to dramatize it in the most overt possible way?

Fair Game supports the idea that WMDs were false, which I guess is appropriate since that’s what was actually revealed, but it still feels like an agenda. When the truth feels like an agenda, something’s wrong. There’s nothing exciting about the dramatization so it’s only pretty actors recreating the news we saw a few years ago.

There is a tense moment for an Iraqi father and his son, but one scene of basic suspense with supporting characters does not make Fair Game a spy movie. Plame loses a tail but you don’t even see how she used her spy tactics to elude him.

When the film gets really into the issue of a government leak and White House cover up, Fair Game seems really passionate. At least Penn seems really passionate about playing Joe Wilson and his crusade for what’s right. It still seems obvious and preachy. Even if the message is good, you don’t want to hear it that way. I mean, don’t let the Vice President get away with exposing CIA agents, but also don’t make movies that only say it’s wrong to expose CIA agents.

Nothing But the Truth was juicier and more exciting. That was from the perspective of a journalist protecting the source of a CIA leak. It was fictional but it explored the ethics and realities on fighting for those ethics in a much more gripping way. That had the passion of former journalist Rod Lurie behind it. Doug Liman has political passion, but I guess politics just isn’t as exciting as journalism. But then nothing is as exciting as journalism, if I do say so myself.
