Rather than just cut the head off of Community, the producers have decide to stab it with spoons until the victim dies of either blood loss or boredom. It’s well-documented that Chevy Chase left because he’s a dick, but now word is emerging that the multi-talented Donald Glover will be involved only sparingly as he allocates more time to developing his rap career as Childish Gambino.

It could be a sincere move to nourish another career, or it could be a rat deserting a sinking ship. That’s not to say I think that Glover is a rat. He’s a human being. And he has feelings. And perhaps one of those feelings is “Community might not be very good next year.”

The To-Do List stars Aubrey Plaza as a 30-year old recent high school grad who wants to become sexually experienced before going off to have college sex. Enter, cast members of NBC comedies. Because if there’s anyone that knows how to please a girl, it’s awkward guys who’ve had to depend on humor and Muppet impressions to become accepted by society.

Except for Ghostface Killa. He's the best.

The post What We’d Like To See From ‘Hip Hop Squares’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

A few weeks back, MTV announced that they would be reviving the 1980’s TV game show Hollywood Squares. But rather than filling the stacked boxes with “celebrities” like Jim J. Bullock and Shadow Stevens (whoever the hell they are), they are gonna cram that tic-tac-toe board full of rappers.

This is a phenomenal idea, because it basically boils down to “rappers are going to tell you something, and you have to say to their face if you think they’re lying.” Under no circumstances do I foresee this show being anything but a beautiful trainwreck. Because, when you think about how little the celebrities involved in the original Hollywood Squares gave a shit about the show, then consider that they’re being replaced with RAPPERS, you can’t help but get a big-ass smile across your face.

Just like the its parent program, Hip Hop Squares isn’t exactly getting A-listers to sit in on the show. A recent New York Times visit to the set offered a picture of the nine “squares,” the list is as follows:

Childish Gambino (Community’s Donald Glover)
Fat Joe
Mac Miller
Tech N9ne
DJ Khaled
Ghostface Killa
Donnell Rawlings
MGK
Kat Graham

Contestants will be counting on the knowledge of this man, Mac Miller.

I know who six of these people are, and only care about two of them (Glover and Ghostface), which is probably for the best. This isn’t the type of show you tune into to see Fat Joe try to trick a contestant into believing that Portugal is a province of Spain. This is a show you watch to witness Fat Joe do something stupid and irrational, like try and throw something at a contestant from his perch on the top right of the board.

Dissecting the show itself is pretty stupid, because it’s a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type of endeavor. What’s more interesting is a) trying to determine who thought this program would be a good idea, b) why someone thought this program would be a good idea, and c) all the awesome stuff that could happen on this show.

Oh, now is probably the right time to mention that the celebrity squares are actually encouraged to drink before the taping.

BUT WHAT IF THEY HAVE ERRANDS TO RUN LATER ON THAT DAY?

Mr. McConaughey won't be on the show. Just making sure you're paying attention.

Despite the fact that the show is on MTV, and the production values seem to be pretty high, the contestants can only really win a few hundred dollars on a show, which for some reason makes the show feel even more fly-by-night than it actually is.

While I don’t have the access (or inclination, honestly) to determine what mentally unstable MTV exec hell-bent on getting fired greenlit this show, nor the mindset of the offending party, I do have the wherewithal to suggest a number of scenarios that could play out, leaving me with a warm feeling inside the cockles of my heart.

Yup. Cockles.

Scenario #1: Fat Joe reveals an astounding knowledge of Eastern European history by correctly informing a contestant that Budapest was results from the unification of two separate cities, Buda and Pest, via the Szechenyi Chain Bridge, the name of which he is able to pronounce in a virtually flawless Hungarian accent.

The Budpest Baths, a place Fat Joe may or may not be familiar with.

After the contestant agrees with him, Fat Joe celebrates by firing a pistol into the air several time, then slurring the phrase “Fuck the haters.”

Scenario #2: Bottom right square Mac Miller informs the contestants and host Peter Roseberg that he would gladly change spots with them so he could catch a glimpse of Lil’ Kim in the top center square and “see dem titties.”

Scenario #3: Xzibit pimps out his square with a fern and a goldfish bowl.

Scenario #4: The pilot episode needs to be reshot after all nine entries fail to demonstrate even a basic grasp of the premise of tic-tac-toe.

Scenario #5: Any celebrity participant makes history by correctly answering a question while receiving a blow job from some chickenhead.

You get the idea. Unfortunately, MTV rarely allows such colossal screw-ups to occur, preferring their shows to end with a dull fizzle, rather than an explosion. Consequently, while we hope for Armageddon, we’ll probably be left with more mumbling, bleeped profanity, and general nonsense than anything else.

Maybe, just maybe, if we’re lucky, we’ll get one rapper climbing up to another rapper’s square affording the latter the opportunity to “say it to his face.”

The post If ‘Community’ Gets Cancelled, Here Are 6 Alternative Ways To Enjoy Donald Glover appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Earlier this week, we here in the Internet were given quite a shock when we heard that Community is being “temporarily” pulled from NBC‘s schedule. The general consensus was something along the lines of, “They can’t pull Community! That’s my #1 source of Community!”

While we hope for the best and brace for the worst, we can’t help but wonder what will happen to the show’s talented cast. Are they really expected to give up the best job in the world? And if they are to-be canceled, what of the fans? Don’t they know that when you entertain someone on national television, your body makes a promise whether you do or not?

Luckily, we have a good feeling that these kids will be all right. Especially Donald Glover. He’s enjoyed success with all of his ventures in the past few years and doesn’t show any signs of slowing. He is the second most popular Donald on IMDb, afterall. He’s coming for you, Donald Sutherland.

So don’t fret, fans of Community. There are alternative ways to enjoy Donald Glover.

DERRICK Comedy

The career Donald Glover has today is thanks in large part to the Internet sketch comedy group DERRICK. He gained popularity from the short videos the group would produce and put on the web, which lead to the self-produced film Mystery Team as well as writing jobs with The Daily Show and 30 Rock.

Stand-up

After success in acting, sketch and film writing, Glover decided to raise his persona by trying out stand-up comedy. Spoiler alert: he’s really good at it, and was given his own special on Comedy Central. It only makes sense that the Just For Laughs festival would bestow him with the Rising Star In Comedy award later that year. His one hour special WEIRDO will debut on Comedy Central this Sunday night.

Childish Gambino

You’ve gotta go with momentum. That’s why Glover is parlaying his Community fame into a music career. Using a name he found from a Wu Tang name generator, he raps as Childish Gambino (the Wu generator named me Gorky’s Zygotic Glove Puppet. Advantage: Glover). His song “Freaks and Geeks” appeared in an Adidas commercial and his debut album, CAMP, is now available in stores.

By now, you’re probably familiar with Magnitude, the character from Community whose “pop pop” catchphrase is sweeping the nation. But chances are you didn’t know that Magnitude, a.k.a. Luke Youngblood, is a British actor who also appeared as Lee Jordan in two of the Harry Potter films: Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

Having both Hogwarts and Greendale on your resume is quite impressive.

At last week’s Comic-Con, Community star Donald Glover discussed how the “pop pop” catch phrase is a fan favorite despite the fact that it was originally meant as a one-off joke.

“It’s nonsense,” Glover said. “The joke of it is that it’s so shitty.”

Glover went on to say that hearing Youngblood deliver his “pop pop” lines is even funnier considering he speaks with a proper British accent.

“Luke Youngblood: You couldn’t get more British if you wanted.”

SNL’s Bill Hader sure knows the kinds of names to drop to make comedy nerds drool. He is reporting that a slew of up and coming (as well as already here) comedians are slated to appear in The Hand Job, the 2009 Black List script his wife Maggie Carey wrote. The film is slated to star”Parks And Recreation” actress Aubrey Plaza as a 17 year-old girl trying to experiment sexually before going off to college. According to Hader, the film, should it receive the necessary funding, will be directed by Carey, and will star he, Andy Samberg, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, and Johnny Simmons. That’s a veritable murderer’s row of comedic talent, AND the mom from”Friday Night Lights!” Let’s just hope the stars align so that these busy and talented people can synch their schedules, and that the funding for this comes though. Synchronize nerd boners, kids. (Collider)

‘Community’ Invites In Malcolm Jamal Warner And Levar Burton http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-invites-in-malcolm-jamal-warner-and-levar-burton/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-invites-in-malcolm-jamal-warner-and-levar-burton/#comments Thu, 20 Jan 2011 22:50:45 +0000 Fred Topel http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=21098 The cast offers up some juicy spoilers on the D&D episode and Shirley's ex-husband.

The post ‘Community’ Invites In Malcolm Jamal Warner And Levar Burton appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
As I mentioned in my Ed Helms interview, the NBC party for the Television Critics Association winter press tour had the densest population of A-list talent in the bar/lounge area of the Langham Hotel in Pasadena. That included the cast of “Community,” save for Chevy Chase who was sick and Joel McHale who was filming “The Soup.”

“Community” presented a press conference in the afternoon, so I followed up on the news of their Dungeons & Dragons episode later. I snagged Yvette Nicole Brown, Allison Brie, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Ken Jeong and series creator Dan Harmon.

Q: How long will you guys leave Chang hanging?

Ken Jeong: I hope for a long time because Dan was making a lot of Charlie Brown allusions in it. I always think of this as like Lucy taking the football away from Charlie Brown in these episodes where Chang wants to be part of the study group.

Q: What class of characters do you get to play in D&D?

Allison Brie: Oh, well, geez. My character’s named Hector the Well Endowed. I think that pretty much speaks for itself.

Q: She chose a male?

AB: Well, they sort of end up choosing at random. I think that Annie is not as into the Dungeons & Dragons as some people are. So she’s going along with it and being a good sport but she doesn’t really know that much about it.

Yvette Nicole Brown: Shirley does not pick. There’s a few of us that don’t pick. Our characters are given to us by Abed. So Shirley does not pick. I don’t want to say any more than that. They’re really cute characters.

Q: Did any of you play?

Donald Glover: No, but I like that Choose Your Own Adventure shit. I really liked Oregon Trail and the Choose Your Own Adventure books.

Q: I remember Oregon Trail. That was educational.

DG: Yeah, but I loved it. I loved all that stuff.

Dan Harmon: That’s how I learned to write, how to socialize or rather avoided socializing. Yeah, that was my first refuge from a cruel, cruel world. Thank God for stuff like that that gathers nerds in clusters so that you can stay safe.

Q: Were you a DM or player?

DH: I was a player for all the fun times and I tried to be a DM when there was nobody to play with and nobody to DM, I loved it so much I tried to DM and I sucked at it.

Danny Pudi: I play a little bit. It’s funny that it’s actually kind of happening. I never really got into it. I did play maybe once or twice when I was in high school with a couple buddies, but this past summer I did a movie, a live action role playing movie called Knights of Badassdom with Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage and Ryan Kwanten. So I feel like it’s calling me. That genre is definitely calling me. Now I wish I played it more because it’s this whole role playing thing. You get to act and play all these people with wizards and mystical powers. I don’t know how I missed it.

YNB: I don’t think Shirley really fully gets the whole thing and I don’t fully get Dungeons & Dragons. I want to understand it but I flipped through one of the books, it was so intricate. I was like, you need a PhD to play Dungeons & Dragons or at least to play it well. So I don’t know if Shirley quite understand.

Q: What other cool stuff is coming up?

AB: We sort of touched on Annie living in a bad neighborhood and we walked down the hallway of her place and it’s kind of sketchy. I can just say that we’re going to go further in that direction and you do sort of learn about Annie’s struggles and things that she’s going through.

DG: Troy and Abed fight over the same girl, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Levar Burton. That’s all the stuff I can say without getting in trouble.

YNB: Aside from Malcolm Jamal Warner? I can’t think of anything else better than that. It’s hard to go wrong. His first episode airs the 20th and we got two more. He’s doing three. I just finished my second episode with him today.

Q: What does he play?

YNB: He’s Shirley’s ex-husband and they’re reconciling maybe. I don’t want to say too much.

Q: But he’s only in 3 so that doesn’t bode well.

YNB: He’s only in three episodes so far. That’s his minimum. It could go on for forever. Our show always brings people back. Even when you don’t have a deal to do three, you end up doing three.

Q: Shirley’s mentioned her ex before. Did you always imagine Malcolm Jamal Warner in that part?

YNB: I always dreamed that it was. From the first season, I told Dan Harmon that that was my dream. I told every writer that would come to set, if Shirley’s ex-husband is ever seen and they reconcile, because that was my point, if they reconcile, I would love for it to be Malcolm Jamal Warner. I always say Isaiah Mustafa for her love interest but Malcolm for her husband.

Q: Would Troy and Abed have a unique perspective on Malcolm Jamal Warner and Levar Burton because of the roles they’ve played on TV?

DG: I think unconsciously yes just because it’s a TV show about TV shows. So yes, but other than that, not really. I can’t really go into it but I think the only comment really on them is that it’s a TV show about TV shows.

Q: How does the new girl challenge the bromance of Troy and Abed?

DG: In a very cool way. I’m very happy with how that turned out. It’s really interesting but we really do realize we’re kind of a pair which is really beautiful. Bros before hos.

Q: It must be a special kind of woman who’d appeal to both of them.

DG: I think so.

Q: Is that a famous guest star playing the role?

DG: Can’t say.

Q: Does that episode happen to coincide with Valentine’s Day?

DG: Yes.

DH: We’re shooting one on Monday that I’m really excited about, if only because Richard Ayoade is directing. He’s Moss on “IT Crowd” and Dean Lerner on “Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place.” Big big fan of his work on camera and off. He’s directing next week’s episode. He’s shooting the episode we’re shooting next week. It’s exciting to be around him.

Q: Dan are you still hands on writing every episode?

DH: Yeah, I was more Howard Hughesy about first season, I think to the show’s detriment. I would not go into work. I would stay at home for two days and work in my pajamas and then come in. People wouldn’t have time to do what they’re doing. This season what’s making the show great is just what all TV writers do which is punch stuff up. Have different brains bringing in weird random stuff. They can be funny too, give us the ball.

Q: Ken, for Hangover 2, is there a good reason Mr. Chow is in Thailand?

KJ: Yes, yes. It’s much like here on “Community,” in their second season, I see a lot of parallels. When you’re doing Hangover 2 and you’re reunited with that old crew again, I think the script is better than the first one.

Q: Allison, how close together might you shoot a “Mad Men” and a “Community?”

AB: Oh, we’ve done it in the same day.

Q: That’s awesome. What are those days like?

AB: Amazing. I love them. Those are the days when I’m like, “I’m an actor! I’m working!” Also it makes me marvel at the differences between the shows because it’s surprisingly not that difficult to go form one set to the other and from one character to the other. I think I’ve done “Mad Men” in the morning and gone over to “Community” in the evening and started with “Community” in the morning and then finished up with “Mad Men.” It’s such a funny and interesting transformation, putting on the jewelry and getting your hair done and then sort of stripping down and wiping it away. It’s very cool.

Q: You sound more like Trudy than Annie. Is that closer to your real voice?

AB: I’m glad that you commented on my voice because I do make an effort to differentiate them vocally and physically and all of that. I got my degree in theater from California Institute of the Arts so we do all sorts of physical and vocal training there, down to the minute exploring different parts of your tongue and teeth and sounds that you can make. I found it invaluable, just totally useful.

“Community” returns tonight at 8PM on NBC.

The first images of Andrew Garfield in the new Spider-Man suit raced across the Internet yesterday afternoon and dominated the news cycle. Now, reactions are beginning to trickle in. Vulture caught up with the Internet’s preferred Peter Parker, Donald Glover, to ask his thoughts on the first look.

During a “Community” panel at the TCA, Glover had this to say:

“It’s kinda dope. You know what the coolest part of it is? He has a backpack, which I think is sick. The part of Spider-Man I always loved [is]: He’s young, and he’s dealing with everybody hating him and he’s got all this weight on his shoulders. [The backpack] reminds you of how young he is.”

Not only that, but if it’s a Jansport backpack it comes with a lifetime guarantee on it. So you can have that sweet baby replaced no matter what the Lizard does to it.

‘Community’ Halloween Episode Preview http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-halloween-episode-preview/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-halloween-episode-preview/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 This morning I have for you a preview of the upcoming Halloween episode of "Community." Zombies have taken over Greendale. The producers have also managed to make all the characters' costumes funny again, as well as indicative of their unique personalities. Jeff is so vain that he always goes as something effortlessly attractive. This year he's David Beckham. Brilliant. And wait until you see Senor Chang. "Community" is without a doubt one of the best shows on television, and it's perplexing to me that no one watches it. You and I might watch it, but everyone else is tuning into "The Big Bang Theory" and not DVRing the little college sitcom on NBC at the same time. Some affiliates across the country are even dropping it from their lineup due to the fact that no one in their city gives a crap. That is not a good sign, folks. Once affiliates start dropping programs it's not long before it gets yanked from the schedule altogether. Let's watch this Halloween episode and save this show from going the way of "Arrested Development." Check out the preview after the jump...

Donald Glover Has More Spider-man Plans; ‘Community’ Goes Into Space http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/donald-glover-has-more-spider-man-plans;-community-goes-into-space/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/donald-glover-has-more-spider-man-plans;-community-goes-into-space/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Donald Glover did not succeed in his campaign to become the first black Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield will keep Spidey Caucasian, but Glover’s still getting some digs in. He opened the new season of “Community” dressed in Spider-Man pajamas. It was more for the Black Spidey movement than for Glover himself. “It’s weird, I feel like a lot of people were connected to that more so than I was which was interesting,” Glover said in a conference call today. “It felt like the war veteran who had his leg shot off and then he got a new leg and walks up to the podium and people are teary eyed. And people are like, ‘He did it anyway.’ I’m like, it’s not that big a deal. This happened during the summer, let’s make a nod to it. It was fun to do it. Was the costume cool? It was pajamas. Pajamas that were tailored to me.” More after the jump...

However, Glover isn’t totally over it. Halloween is coming up, and if you get to be at one of those star studded Hollywood shindigs where celebrities come dressed up, you might witness Glover’s final Spidey gag. “I might dress up as Spider-Man and at the end of the night take off my mask and go, ‘Ah-ha, see, I could’ve done it.’ That’s my one idea.”

Coming up, “Community” has big plans for Glover. There’s a zombie episode, a claymation episode and this week the gang goes into space. “The big question was how are we going to beat the paintball episode? How are we going to do something bigger than that? The joke around was how do we get even bigger? Maybe we send them to space. That was the joke, send the ‘Community’ cast to space. Dan [Harmon] being the genius that he is was like, ‘Yeah, we’ll send them to space’ and worked out a way to send them to space. It’s really cool. We’re kind of in space and it’s really cool that we’re able to do that. They’re really good at coming up with ways to do everything. We’re doing a zombie movie, claymation. None of them are dreams. Nobody wakes up and says oh, that’s how that was possible. They all actually happen.”

Many franchises jump the shark by going into space. We’re looking at you Hellraiser, Critters and Leprechaun! “Community” has a secre weapon for launching into orbit without circling any sharks.

“I think Dan’s really aware of that because we have Abed who’s the voice of the audience as well as the fanboys and everything. He makes sure he keeps us fair, he keeps us even. I don’t think we’re going to jump the shark. First of all, it’s one of the first episodes and Dan’s really good at making Abed the voice of what we’re doing. It’s not really in space but it does play a lot of those tropes you would find in space movies. I think by cutting it off at the pass, if it was the season finale it would be a lot worse, but by doing it as one of the first episodes and Abed being there calling out all the tropes of space flight, it makes it okay. I think Dan really doesn’t always love reference humor but he knows he can do it better than anyone else, so he uses Abed to get the reference humor out and combat it.”

Although, “Community” jumping the shark might be pretty funny too. “If I got a wise cracking little cousin and he had a snide comment, like ‘What’d you say?’ If that was his catch phrase and he had overalls, that would be jumping the shark. I think that would take the cake. Or Abed’s crazy cousin came and Abed’s cousin is from the country, like, ‘Hey y’all, what’s going on?’ That would be jumping the shark.”

“Community” airs Thursday nights on NBC.
