DJ Caruso To Resurrect ‘A Walk Among The Tombstones’ After 14 Years?

After languishing for 14 years in development hell, A Walk Among the Tombstones appears to be back, provided DJ Caruso attaches himself to the project. Deadline states that Caruso is weighing this project against Preacher for his next gig.

Tombstones is an adaptation of an entry of the same name in the David Scudder series of books. In this particular story, retired cop Matthew Scudder helps a heroin boss recover his kidnapped wife. Did someone say “gritty?”

Cross Creek pictures is hoping to establish a franchise out of this entry, so there’s more riding on this project than just the one film. Caruso has helmed several similar projects including Eagle Eye, Disturbia, and I Am Number Four. Harrison Ford was attached to an older iteration of the project over a decade ago, but then he went and got a ridiculous earring, so the search for a star begins anew.

A movie version of Garth Ennis’ Preacher has been a tantalizing prospect for many years now. And in an anticlimax that is sure to make Ennis scoff, it’s previously rumored DJ Caruso (I Am Number Four, Disturbia) who’s actually getting to make it happen. There’s still some chance it might fall through I guess, since the deal is in its “final stages,” but he announced it via Twitter, so it looks like it’s going to happen. Unless of course that’s a DJ Caruso Twitter impostor, which would be the weirdest thing ever.

Who knows, maybe Caruso will surprise us all by making a movie that matches the madcap insanity of the comic, with all the crazy sex and violence (and sexual violence) that that entails. Until then, I’m going to remain pessimistic in order to protect myself from disappointment. (via Collider)

DJ Caruso May Direct ‘Preacher’, Shia LaBeouf Would Play Every Role

The rumor is that DJ Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) is in talks to direct Preacher, a feature film based on Vertigo’s acclaimed graphic novel series of the same name. I’ve never seen Caruso’s most famous movies, but my understanding is that they’re not exactly heady. So the coupling of Caruso and the smart, darkly satirical and deep story of Preacher sounds as unnatural as sex between an angel and a demon. That goes double for the first name on Caruso’s speed-dial, Shia LaBeouf, playing the weighty role of Jesse Custer. Though I would like to see him get hit over the head with a pool cue.

John August (Corpse Bride) wrote the most recent adaptation for Columbia Pictures, which is reportedly faithful to the original Garth Ennis comic. At one point, Sam Mendes was attached to direct, but he bailed for Bond. That’s what we know for sure, because the Caruso story is only a rumor. At this point, a Preacher adaptation has been “in the works” since 1998, and was at one time going to be an HBO mini-series directed by Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider). So… anybody awesome wanna direct this instead? (/Film)

D.J. Caruso Does Not Fear ‘The Reaper’ (Cue Cowbell)

As excited as D.J. Caruso is about I Am Number Four being released next weekend, he’s probably even more excited about the news that broke today. He has been picked to direct the adaptation of the acclaimed novel Beat the Reaper, which focuses on a former mobster who goes about his life in witness protection only to get tracked down by “associates” from his past. One could assume that some conflict arises out of that scenario.

Whereas Caruso took the reins of Four after Michael Bay decided to cash the giant paycheck that is Transformers 3, Caruso isn’t being called in to replace anyone with Beat the Reaper. He was selected by no less than Fox and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way. Caruso says, via Playlist, that they are trying to hire Leo as the protagonist, though confirmation on that is still outstanding. While this project sounds like a worthwhile endeavor, I’m sure that DiCaprio is swimming in worthwhile projects, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not he’ll commit, though his attachment as producer is a good sign.

This puts Caruso amidst two expected franchises in Four and Reaper, as the doctor character in the latter is expected to be built upon in later books, so this announcement could effectively tie Caruso up for the next ten years or so. Or…we could just see how both these initial entries treat him and take it from there. Yeah. Let’s do that.

Beat the Reaper is in bookstores and everyone I know is telling me I should read it, which is the highest recommendation I can give without having read it myself. What? It’s a movie site, not a literary forum…

Timothy Olyphant and the hotness of Dianna Agron are mainly responsible for the I Am Number Four trailer looking decent. Alex Pettyfer plays number four, an alien targeted for death by the ringwraiths/death eaters/cloaked things that destroyed his home planet. There is a lot of shouting and explosions accompanied by blue light. Then number six shows up and I’m all like, “Who dat is?” A hot blonde with a katana sword? Just play it cool, number four. She could turn out to be your dream girl. Unless she likes getting number one-d on.

The teaser trailer for I Am Number Four has beamed down to give us a first look at DJ Caruso‘s first non-Shia LaBeouf film of the last few years. This bold, sci-fi retelling of “The Three Little Pigs” stars newish-comer Alex Pettyfer as an alien hiding out from his enemies in a suburba high school. You can’t glean too much from this trailer apart from the fact that there’s telekinesis and this high school is over-populated with really hot kids. Which is unrealistic. Take it from me, I own a quality pair of binoculars. Kids today just aren’t this attractive. Or they aren’t in the school zone near me anyway.

Glee’s Dianna Agron Toe Touch Jumps to ‘I Am Number Four’

Dianna Agron, best known for her cheerleader roles on "Glee" and "Heroes," has joined the cast of I Am Number Four to play a… cheerleader. In the DJ Caruso-directed film, Agron will dump her jock boyfriend to cozy up to alien refugee Alex Pettyfer. Also on board are Sharlto Copley as Pettyfer’s guardian and Teresa Palmer as Number Six.

The movie based on a novel co-authored by James Frey, tells the story of nine alien children who escape to Earth after being hunted by a hostile race. There they hide in Middle America where they shift nervously in their seats whenever Syfy shows reruns of "Roswell." (THR)
