When we last saw Riddick he was choking the dragon on the surface of the desert planet where he’s been living by himself for ten years. This new trailer gives us a bit more. A team of bounty hunters track him and attempt to take his head. However, Riddick enjoys his dragon-choking time deeply and doesn’t cotton to interruption so he begins picking them off one by one. And then the monsters awaken and things really get crazy.

It’s like First Blood in space! How come nobody thought to make this sooner?

With the exchange rate of nudity and adult situations at an all-time low, R-rated films are having a much harder time earning a profit at the box office. Studios are hesitant to invest in stronger content even if it does sound really awesome and feature tentacle monsters. You’d think that certain film makers would be immune to the penny pinching, especially when they can make movies about driving around really fast into global phenomenons. But no, even Vin Diesel has money woes in today’s economy.

He recently updated his Facebook page to say that The Chronicles Of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking has the go-ahead. But at a price. Both to his stylish money tote and his soul.

“[David Twohy] the writer/director just landed in New York with the good news. We can start filming this summer,” writes Diesel. “However, there is a catch … in order for us to make a true R-rated film, I must work for scale upfront. Not unlike the “Find me Guilty” experience (which I wouldn’t have changed for the world). Money is always second to art, integrity and spirit… but the real issue is deeper. Can I suspend my life, to momentarily venture to that dark place… called Riddick.”

Don’t stare too deeply into the Abyss, friend. As I’m sure you’re aware, the Abyss stares back. The Abyss stares back.

The Vin Diesel sequel train continues to chugga, chugga. In recent months he’s announced xXx: The Return of Xander Cage and Fast Five, both follow-ups to films that somehow made him a star. Now he’s adding another Riddick film to the pile. Riddick is the character he played in Pitch Black and its completely unconnected spin-off, The Chronicles of Riddick.

Nobody is talking plot yet, but director David Twohy states that the tone of the new movie falls closer to Pitch Black than it does Chronicles. Though I wish it fell more in the laugh-track sitcom realm as the simple title Riddick would imply. All they would have to do is add an exclamation point and have him move in with his nerdlinger brother (played by Jason Biggs) and they’d be good to go. (Variety)
