I can only imagine that’s what was running through the mind of Omar Little Jr. as he was arrested last night in Baltimore on a hand gun violation. No, I’m not talking about a rerun of The Wire I was watching On-Demand. I’m talking about a real life (alleged) criminal in Baltimore who happens to share a name with the show’s most iconic character.

Apparently, The Wire creator David Simon has already stated that the real-life Omar is in no way related to the fictional character played by Michael K. Williams, and that the name is purely coincidence. But if it turns out the real-life Omar has a penchant for robbing drug dealers or banging twinks, I’m going to go ahead and call bullsh*t. Then again, even if Simon did steal this man’s identity, who cares? It’s all in the game, yo. (Warming Glow)

Showers played New Orleans homicide Captain John Guidry on the show, which examines New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and in the context of the rebuilding process.

Though similarities between this tragedy and other deaths during Katrina abound, the death als mirrors one from the first season of the show, in which John Goodman’s character killed himself by jumping off of a steamboat into the Mississippi River.

David Simon issued a typically eloquent statement about the loss:

“Michael Showers was a fine actor who contributed his talents to our drama in the warmest and most professional way. We enjoyed his work — and working with him. Going forward, we’re going to miss having him as part of our production. All of which seems of little import in light of the loss of a man’s whole life, and what that loss truly means to him, his family, his friends. Our respect and condolences go to them, especially.”

The circumstances of the death ar unknown at this time.

The teaser for "Treme" gave us only sad, orphaned instruments, so it’s nice to see some people paying attention to them in this new trailer. Everyone seems happy as pie, but since "The Wire’s" David Simon is co-creator I have a sneaking suspicion things are going to take a turn for the worse. It’s just good TV, folks. Or rather, good HBO.

A perfectly good cello leans up against a porch support in the teaser for HBO’s new series Treme. The cello is one of several sad, ownerless instruments featured in the tour of the New Orleans neighborhood in which the series is set. Treme, from The Wire creator (start creaming your jeans) David Simon, will examine New Orleans in much the same way The Wire examined Baltimore Treme specifically focuses on the musicians living in the titular neighborhood.
