The director passed away on location in South Africa.

Cause of death has not been released but Deadline reports that director David R. Ellis has died unexpectedly while in South Africa prepping his next film, the live-action adaptation of the anime Kite.

His career began as an actor before leading to stunt coordinating which in turn eventually lead to directing. While best known for pitting Samuel L. Jackson against poisonous snakes at 30,000 feet in Snakes On A Plane, his best film is Final Destination 2. The sequel raised the bar on gore and splatter in the series and remains the pinnacle of what those films can be. Say what you will about his other films, Shark Night 3D, Cellular, the idiotically NASCAR-based The Final Destination, but it’s only appropriate to play him off with his greatest work — the spectacular car crash from Final Destination 2. Our condolences.

Star Sara Paxton likes it that way.

Listen, I will still defend Snakes on a Plane ‘til the day I die. It’s been five years, and no other movie since has given us snakes, on a plane. I think director David Ellis can do the same for sharks. I found out a little bit more about Shark Night 3D from Sara Paxton on the set of her next movie. She’s shooting Liars All in Los Angeles, but Shark Night gave her hardcore swimming lessons.

“They stuck me in a lake and there’s frickin’ water moccasins and alligators and there can be real bull sharks,” Paxton said. “I’m in the lake wading, and we trained with the Navy SEALS for like a month before the movie.”

No, it was not SEAL Team 6. Paxton’s Liars All costar Matt Lanter made that joke before even I could. “Oh, I get it, I get it,” Paxton said.

More importantly, Shark Night is full of young hotties in bikinis and real old school shark effects. “We got to have fun in a lake with seven young people in bathing suits all day, with animatronic sharks,” she said. “They didn’t want it to get too CGI and I kind of agree with that because I feel like too much CGI just doesn’t look that great to me.”

Shark Night 3D comes out September 14.

It's lazier than this excerpt I'm writing right now.

I’m big fan of the Snakes On A Plane internet meme. So I’m glad that director David R. Ellis isn’t letting naysayers sway him away from using another jokey title that could cost his movie millions of dollars in revenue. Ellis isn’t a fan of the foreign title of his new movie Shark Night 3D, so he’s proposing this title for the US release:

Untitled 3D Shark Thriller

“The title says everything you need to know,” Ellis said. “‘We’ve got sharks.’ ‘It’s in 3D.’ and, ‘It’s a thriller.’”

You know what? If Relativity Media wants to release a film with “Untitled” in the title, and David R. Ellis doesn’t mind putting his reputation on the line, I will proudly participate in an Untitled 3D Shark Thriller Photoshop contest. Then I will forward the link for that contest to my friends, so they can post it on their Facebook walls. We’ll all have a grand old time on the intertubes.

Now, will I pay $25 dollars for a movie they were too ironically lazy to find a good title for? Uhm… no. But I’ll gladly make fun of the trailer on Twitter, which I assume will help their box office numbers somehow.
Relativity Media has picked up Ellis's Shark Night 3D and re-monikered it with the much more catchy The Untitled David R. Ellis 3D Shark Thriller. TUDRE3DST just rolls right off the tongue.

Not one to be outdone by Piranha 3D, David R. Ellis is also dipping his toe into topless women getting devoured by an underwater menace film-making. Relativity Media has picked up Ellis’s Shark Night 3D and re-monikered it with the much more catchy The Untitled David R. Ellis 3D Shark Thriller. TUDRE3DST just rolls right off the tongue.

Ellis knows a thing or two about how important a title is, after directing Snakes On A Plane, so you can look forward to seeing some monkey-biting sharks in a Monday to Friday lake to release wide in 2011. The film stars Donal Logue, Joel David Moore, Katharine McPhee, and other people that I’m too lazy to list. I think one of the guys was on “The O.C.” or something. I just wish Ellis could have found a role for Heidi Montag. She really wanted this. (THR)
