If you’re going to make a series about the life of a rock n’ roll band these days, Foo Fighters are a pretty good candidate for a subject. The band is arguably the most popular pure rock band in the world, and lead singer Dave Grohl has both a storied past and a very good on-screen presence. With those weapons in their arsenal HBO and Grohl bring us a longgggggg trailer for Sonic Highways, the documentary of the Foo Fighters recording eight songs in eight cities for an album of the same name.

Each episode brings us a new city and a new song. Pretty good idea for a documentary series. In the band’s travels, they converse with local talent such as Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Chuck D, LL Cool J, Mike D, Bonnie Raitt, Slash, Gary Clark Jr. and Joan Jett.

The trailer looks like the network and Grohl got it right. Take a look.

Kidding. Colbert's great.

The Foo Fighters have taken a cue from the Justin Timberlake playbook (odd inspiration) and booked a week as the musical act for a late night talk show. However, whereas JT went to Jimmy Fallon, the Foos (that’s what I call ‘em. Superhuge timesaver) will be taking their talents to David Letterman‘s Late Show for five nights next week (October 13th-17th).

It probably isn’t a coincidence that the Foo Fighters have a new album coming out soon, and lead singer Dave Grohl is producing Sonic Highways, a docu-series about life on the road for rock bands. They get publicity, and David Letterman gets an established act for not one, not two, but five nights.

Seems like everyone wins, but no one more so than Foo Fighters fans.

That's never been done, has it?

While Fred Durst’s CBS comedy Douchebag languishes away in development hell, look for the constantly overachieving Dave Grohl to beat him to the airwaves with his untitled FX rock comedy about a band that collectively goes to therapy to stave off breaking up.

If the premise sounds familiar, this premise (though not intentionally comedic) was the impetus behind the 2004 Metallica documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, which observed the band as they tried to work out their internal problems.

Grohl, though pretty hammy and funny in front of the camera, appears to be taking on only producing duties here, while comedian and former Simpsons writer Dana Gould will play the hapless therapist who has some problems of his own.

It sounds like casting will be everything in this one, as I could see it thriving as a semi-improvised show such as Curb Your Enthusiasm.

As decent as Grohl is heading up the Foo Fighters, his side projects (up until now, mostly musical: Probot, Them Crooked Vultures, his videos) have proven more interesting to me than his day job, so I’m pretty optimistic about this one, but would love to see him in a starring capacity, as he’s already got the rock star thing down pretty cold while maintaining some self-awareness that many others don’t.
