They're like jokes that you make with your feet.

Ah, the dance off. The storied tradition of lazy comedies released during the aughts. It’s what you do when you realize that writing something witty, memorable, or compelling for your characters to say is really hard. A dance-off is like a joke you can make with your feet and it means you don’t have to break out the dictionary. It’s a win-win for both the filmmaker and the mouth-breather willing to laugh at the weakest attempts to entertain.

Take Me Home Tonight

Wouldn’t it be funny of an obnoxious, overweight guy were to challenge another guy to a dance-off, but it turns out that other guy is really good at dance-offs? Answer: nope.

American Pie 3

When the enthralling narrative of the second American Pie sequel sensibly drew our players to a gay bar, it was a forgone conclusion that <s>someone was going to get f***ed in their pie</s> Stifler was going to dance with a dude. Is this the type of awkward, silly white guy dancing that goes on in gay bars? It’s a wonder those dudes get any at all.

White Chicks

Writing movies is hard. Did you know that you’re expected to fill at least 88 minutes of screentime? And twenty-five minute end credits are frowned upon. That’s (probably) why the Wayan’s Brothers chose to fill up this four-minute gap in White Chicks with a random dance-off. Making characters say words can be hard.

We fire up the Screen Junkies' Funk-O-Tron 5000 to pay tribute to the legend.

Soul Train creator and host Don Cornelius was discovered dead this morning in his home, the victim of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The recently divorced 75-year old brought the dance show to the air in October of 1971, providing a showcase for African American musicians and singers. Think The Grind if you couldn’t masturbate to it.

Cornelius hosted for 22 years before retiring in 1993. The show would remain on the air until 2006. It’s 35 years on the air earned it the honor of being the longest-running first-run nationally syndicated show in television history.

It’s sad to see a man who had such an impact on our culture go out in such a tragic way. The best we can do is look back at Soul Train’s great performances and awesomely retro dances. Drop the needle.

Awesome Line Dance To Rufus’s “Once You Get Started”

Just a little something to get us warmed up.

O’Jay’s “I Love Music“

Now we’re getting there.

The Trammps “Where Do We Go From Here?”

Gotta love the talking intro.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes “Bad Luck”

The sweetest arm moves start at 0:31.

Tavares “Check It Out”

Pretty sure this song is sung by a Soul Accountant.

LaMont Dozier “Fish Ain’t Bitin’”

Wow. That microphone has excellent pick up.

The Fifth Dimension “One Less Bell To Answer”

Is she in a neck brace?

The Joneses “Sugar Pie Guy”

As if the authority of matching pink tuxedos isn’t enough to captivate you, skip ahead to the 0:52 mark. Spo-Dough-Bow.

The Moments “Just Because He Wants To Make Love”

Now, something slow. Grab your best girl and hold her tight.

Isley Brothers “Who’s That Lady?”

Time to pick it back up.

The Dramatics “In The Rain”

How dramatic? In studio lightning effects for starters.

The Intruders “I Bet He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You)”

Not sure why this was performed on a spooky castle set. I’m not complaining. I’m just not sure.

The Futures “I Had A Dream”

Frankly, it’s nice to hear a soul song that utilizes the didgeridoo.

Faith Hope & Charity “Don’t Go Looking For Love”

I’m more captivated by this performance than anything on modern reality shows.

The Jackson Five “All I Do Is Think Of You”

And let’s close with a classic.

Footloose. Dirty Dancing. Saturday Night Fever. Weekend At Bernie's 2. It only took 17 years, 3 months, and 9 days, but now the dancing corpse has officially inspired a dance craze. Southern rap group I.S.A. have created the hit song thing with music behind it "Moving Like Berney." As you'll see in the video below the jump, the dance is easy enough to do. In fact, it's a modified limbo where you wiggle your head while shuffling about aimlessly. Much like the corpse of Bernie Lomax did in the presence of music thanks to a botched voodoo ritual in the poorly-received but now bonafide hit sequel. I'm so glad this exists. Just in time for my best friend's wedding!
Shake your dead groove thang after the jump...

The world's greatest zombie comic book is shuffling its way toward a small screen adaptation. The ridiculously rad Frank Darabont is in final talks to write and direct The Walking Dead for AMC. If you're unfamiliar with the books, the story centers on a group of strangers who must fight for survival in a zombie-infested world. Though the focus is on how we deal with one another once society and the creature comforts crumble, there is quite a bit of disturbing gore throughout.
The world’s greatest zombie comic book is shuffling its way toward a small screen adaptation. The ridiculously rad Frank Darabont is in final talks to write and direct The Walking Dead for AMC. If you’re unfamiliar with the books, the story centers on a group of strangers who must fight for survival in a zombie-infested world. Though the focus is on how we deal with one another once society and the creature comforts crumble, there is quite a bit of disturbing gore throughout. This is super exciting and Darabont is the perfect choice to helm. I’m also very excited that zombies will finally be brought to the small screen. The zombies on The Hills don’t count because those are fast zombies.
