'Tarzan: A New Hope'?

You might recall earlier reports of a Tarzan movie being in development at Warner Bros. You might also recall, if your memory has been able to withstand the savage jungle, that one of the scripts commissioned for the project was to be penned by screenwriter Craig Brewer.

Well, now it seems that Brewer is not only the man for the job, but he’s come up with a Tarzan trilogy idea – not only that, but he wants to direct it, too. This guy must be a bigger Tarzan fan than George of the Jungle. The other script, being worked on by Adam Cozad, hasn’t been thrown into the pit of snakes yet, so it remains to be seen which Tarzan will come out on top. But if WB is even giving thought to Brewer’s idea for not one but three Tarzan movies, it just might be his job to lose.

No details yet on what this trilogy would entail, but it’s definitely true that there is plenty of source material to work with. Edgar Rice Burroughs wasn’t known for stopping at one, three, or a dozen books – the main series include 24 (!) novels. So a trilogy doesn’t seem like that much, does it? (Deadline)

WB Working On A Couple Of ‘Tarzan’ Scripts

Ungawa!

The character of Tarzan has been making money for various companies since the first novel was published in 1912. And it looks like that isn’t going to change any time soon, since Warner Bros. is saying “ungawa!” to another Tarzan movie. And they’re reportedly commissioning two scripts to be written simultaneously.

One of the scripts will be written by up-and-coming screenwriter Adam Cozad, who also worked on the script for the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot. His work on reinventing a popular character might be what attracted WB executives to him for this. The other, according to reports, is being written by Craig Brewer.

This practice isn’t uncommon for big studio movies, especially ones with franchise potential – the script that doesn’t get chosen as the first movie can often be reworked into a sequel if necessary. I just hope WB can work in a cameo from Cheetah the chimp. (Deadline)

Good news and bad news about the Footloose remake. The good news is it’s no longer a Zac Efron vehicle, and it’s no longer based on the Broadway musical. The bad news: it’s still a remake.

Good news and bad news about the Footloose remake. The good news is it’s no longer a Zac Efron vehicle, and it’s no longer based on the Broadway musical. The bad news: it’s still a remake. Dancing with the Stars’ Julianne Hough plays Ariel Moore in director Craig Brewer’s version and she spoke about the remake while promoting her first film, Burlesque, this weekend.

“It’s so true to the original and so fitting for our time the way the script is done right now,” Hough said. “I don’t really dance that much in it. I mean, I do but I had to kind of, not dumb down my dancing but tone it down a little bit. ‘Tone down the hairography’ is what Craig Brewer and I called it.”

Ariel is the daughter of the preacher who bans dancing from his small town in Footloose. The Kevin Bacon original was daring in 1984, so that gives the remake license for 2011. “It’s really a drama with dancing in it rather than a dance movie,” Hough said. “When you look back at the original, it was really edgy. It would probably be rated R in our time now. We’re definitely pushing the envelope a little bit too. The fact that she gets hit in the movie and there’s black eyes. There’s weed in the original movie. It’s like well, they had it so we can do it. So that’s one thing that’s good about redoing the original.”

They still probably shouldn’t remake Footloose, but at least if they do, they can get it right. “Less based on the stage musical, it’s more like the original movie. I’m so happy because I’ve been attached to it for so long, probably about a year and a half now. It was going to be a big musical and I was going to sing in it and dance in it. Then they changed directors and cast and everything. It’s so wonderful that everything happened the way that it did to get to where it’s at.”

Footloose is due out in 2011.

The cast for the Footloose remake has finally been set. Yaaaaay... Julianne Hough is already on board to play the girl, and Dennis Quaid is playing John Lithgow's role of Strict Preacher Father. But I'm guessing you want to know who's filling Kevin Bacon's fancy shoes? It's Kenny Wormwald! You probably remember him from the MTV series "Dancelife" and the film Center Stage: Turn it Up, the sequel to Center Stage. He can dance, and the film's director, Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), must also think he can act. Why else would be turn down Zac Efron and Chase Crawford for an unknown? Oh and some kid named Miles Teller is playing the Chris Penn friend to Bacon role.Listen, all of this is moot unless Kenny Loggins comes out of hiding and records a new song for the soundtrack. Or Kanye just remixes the original "Footloose" pop sensation. Imagine what Strict Preacher Father would think if all the kids were listening to black people music. Getting crunk is forbidden in his little town.
