The MPAA and National Association of Theater Owners have both said what we’re all thinking and told the public and that Google Glass and other wearable technology is not welcome in their parts. It likely has to do with the ability of these devices to record, and subsequently, bootleg, the films shown, but also because maybe an atmosphere of blinking, beeping spectacles isn’t copacetic to getting lost in cinema.

To paraphrase, the lobbies say that all phones must be silenced, and any other recording devices must be turned off. If you don’t turn them off, you’ll be asked to leave, and if you’re caught recording, they’ll call the cops.

This excerpt from Deadline demonstrates exactly how serious they have been about this in the past, which we also covered here:

In January, a theater in Columbus, Ohio called in the Department of Homeland Security, which handles movie theft cases, which detained a visitor who was wearing his Google Glass with prescription lenses to a showing of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The man and his wife were detained and questioned for 3 1/2 hours before officials could ascertain that he was merely watching the movie, not recording it. Someone from the MPAA apologized, and gave him four movie passes.

Please don’t construe this as “wear Google Glass, give up four hours of your time to get interrogated, get four free movie tickets.”

Also, the Department of Homeland Security handles move theft cases? That’s stupid.

In a sad testament to how real the dangers of the reality television forerunner Cops really are, a longtime cameraman for the show, Bryce Dion, died of a gunshot injury in a shootout between police and a gunman. The showdown took place outside an Omaha-area Wendy’s where police confronted an armed robbery suspect.

The gunman was also killed after sticking up the Wendy’s only to find the police, and the film crew waiting outside. A shootout followed, which apparently left the fast food restaurant’s windows riddled with bullet holes and two men mortally injured.

The crew had been in Omaha filming for much of the summer for Spike TV, which has been airing the show after it was dropped by FOX.

There aren’t many more details available as of now, but what more is really needed? A tragic incident that, sadly, is not surprising, given the show’s history of putting film crew in harm’s way.

UPDATE: FOX is going to be releasing some clips in the next hour or so, so watch this space if you’re interested.

Everyone hates summer. We’re forced out of our homes by reruns on TV, only to be assaulted by bright sunlight, abrasively green grass, and painfully hot sand. Thankfully, there’s an end in sight to the awful onslaught of summer, as evidenced by FOX’s fall schedule. Here is the darkness at the end of the painfully bright tunnel:

Monday: “Terra Nova,” the impressively ambitious show with dinosaurs or something at 8 PM, followed by “House” at 9 PM.

Tuesday: Some show called”Glee” at 8 PM, followed by the new “The New Girl” with Zooey Deschanel at 9, then “Raising Hope” at 9:30.

Wednesday: “The X-Factor,” which is different from “American Idol” in dozens of ways, starts at 8 PM. Then it’s “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” with Jamie Pressly at 9:30. That’s right, “The X-Factor” is on for an hour and a half.

Thursday: The evening starts at 8 PM with the results show of “The X-Factor,” which mercifully is only an hour long. Then after that it’s “Bones” at 9.

Friday: “Kitchen Nightmares” at 8 PM followed by”Fringe” at 9. That’s why it’s the most popular TV night of the week!

Saturday: “Cops” is inexplicably still on the air at 8 PM, followed by reruns and “occasional” “America’s Most Wanted” after that at 9.

Sunday: It’s Sunday night animation, starting whenever all that football stuff is over -”The Cleveland Show,”"The Simpsons,” a new show from Jonah Hill called “Allen Gregory,”"Family Guy,” and “American Dad.”

Well, there you have it. Keep this in mind as you struggle to make it through another punishing summer. And remember, you can always watch reruns. (The Hollywood Reporter)
