Now that he’s shown himself amenable to the concept, maybe Ryan Murphy will be willing to reboot Glee with a show set in Japan about a group of Japanese army stragglers who refuse to acknowledge the end of WWII and go totally ninja on everyone. It could be called Deathcaliber.

But, whatever. Either way.

Between this little teaser and the “clues” that we posted about yesterday, this show is shaping up to really raise the bar for horror on TV. Now, we don’t know a thing about the premise, beyond “it’s a family that moves into a haunted house,” but the production designs and cast have been enough so far to ensure that we keep our eyes on this until the October 5th premiere on FX.

As we see from this video, we’ve got Dylan McDermott as the patriarch, and Connie Britton as the mom, supported by Jessica Lange, Jamie Harris, a bunch of disembodied arms and legs, and everyone’s favorite vampire encased in concrete, Denis O’Hare.

How much you wanna bet the kids are home schooled?

FX has been hot on the show ever since Murphy said, “I have an idea.” They even wrote it in big red letters with little hearts on their fall calendar before the pilot was ordered to series, and have now officially set it to premiere October 5. In creating it, Murphy and Falchuk took inspiration from classic 1970s horror movies, including Rosemary’s Baby, Don’t Look Now and The Shining. If the series turns out to be half as awesome as it sounds, we could be in for a nice companion to The Walking Dead. No, not the Sandra Bernhard special. (Deadline)

The twisty story all started to unravel itself Thursday, when Grantland.com editor in chief Bill Simmons tweeted that, “Peter Berg told us he wants to do an FNL movie with Chandler/Britton off the final episode.” After that, multiple sources told me it’s no pipe dream. Berg, who directed the original feature and shepherded the NBC series with exec producer Jason Katims, is working behind the scenes to make it a reality. (TV Line)

So as of right now, Peter Berg wants to make the movie. In the same way that Ron Howard wants to make an Arrested Development movie, and the way the cast of Party Down would like to make a movie. Until there’s a commitment, nothing is certain. Come on Universal, if you like it. Put a ring on it.

“[T]he film … explores what people do when humanity’s last days are at hand and whether Carell’s character can find love at the worst possible time.”

I dunno if it’s really the WORST possible time to find love. If the world’s about to end, no pressure to meet her parents. Anyway, no word yet on who these people are going to play — maybe half of them will be demons and the other half angels? Probably not, though. (Variety)

In “American Horror Story,” McDermott stars opposite Connie Britton, her boobs, and Jessica Lange. The plot is being kept under wraps but a pilot breakdown did provide this info about two characters:

Ben Harmon (McDermott), a handsome and masculine but sensitive therapist who loves his family but has hurt his wife, and Vivien Harmon (Britton), his gorgeous wife who is a force to be reckoned with. Lange plays their nosy neighbor, a role that has been beefed-up after her casting.

Masculine but sensitive. Probably uses Brut aftershave and wears turtle-neck sweaters the rest of us can’t pull off. That’s perfect casting. (Deadline)

She’s playing the “nosy neighbor” of the two leads, which is being expanded into a larger role to accommodate Lange. One of those two leads is a played by Connie Britton, while her husband on the show has yet to be cast. Denis O’Hare is also attached, as “Larry the burn guy.” I’m assuming that Larry the burn guy is a comedian who wears sleeveless shirts and sets people on fire. Man, I hope this show gets picked up, it sounds awesome. Ah, nope, he’s actually a vampire or something. (Deadline)

Historically, horror TV programs have “sucked” (it’s an industry term), which apparently Murphy realized as he promises to transcend genre as he did with “Nip/Tuck” and medical shows then with “Glee” and all those other shows about gay handicapped teenagers.

FX President John Landgraf refers to it as a “really complicated, interesting psychological horror show…” Interesting? I guess he doesn’t want to oversell it. This news is surprising given this recent story that David O. Russell sold a secret show to FX with Connie Britton firmly attached to star. The only logical conclusion that one can draw from this paradox is that David O. Russell and Ryan Murphy are the same person. Which explains why they’re both such big yellers. (THR)

David O. Russell must really carry a flame for Connie Britton. He is working to develop a drama for her on FX with no script or even concept. Of course he’s David O. Russell, so it probably went something like this:

FX Exec: Pass. What else you working with, David?

Russell: A drama.

FX Exec: Intriguing. Any more details?

Russell: With Connie Britton.

FX Exec: We love it. Go nuts. Let us know when it’s ready to air.

Russell: Really? Wow…

Now Russell has to call Connie Britton and tell her what he’s done.

Both are coming off of banner projects, Britton with “Friday Night Lights” and Russell with the Oscar-nominated The Fighter, so it’s not too hard to imagine a scenario like the above one actually playing out that easily. The combination of Britton, Russell and FX is certainly a promising one, as FX has shown in recent seasons that they are more than capable of competing against the pay channels with their original programming. It’s a fools errand to speculate what Russell has up his sleeve, but I’m going to assume it’s something good, even if he hasn’t thought of it yet. (Deadline)
