Oh man! He's just the nuttiest! GOULET!

Last night, history was made. Will Ferrell, appearing as legendary newsman Ronald Burgundy, went on Conan to inform the world that despite years of claims to the contrary, an Anchorman sequel is in the works. Millions of people who hadn’t even realized that they were lacking an Anchorman sequel in their lives rejoiced.

While Ferrell could have disseminated this information through a number of outlets, Conan has proved to be his go-to venue for, well, just about everything. He must REALLY like Conan, considering he’s got a whole comedy website (Funny or Die) that could also handle these announcements, while reaching just as many people. I guess it’s the spectacle of being on semi-live televisions, as well as Conan’s willingness to let Ferrell do pretty much whatever he wants.

He’s a good sport that way.

While this might be the most newsworthy of Ferrell’s appearances on Conan, it’s far from the most outrageous. Here’s a collection of Ferrell’s weirdest and funniest appearances on Conan.

“Free Bird”

The last image from Conan’s ill-fated Tonight Show tenure is this live performance of Lynard Skynard’s ballad “Free Bird,” which served as a fairly moving goodbye, in as much as a talk show hosting change can be moving. While Ferrell took vocal duties in the character of some southern-fried rocker, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Beck, and Conan all took guitar duty while the rest of Conan’s band laid down rhythm.

It may have been during this video that casual fans learned that Conan is an absolute beast on guitar, and all fans, casual or not, were reminded that Ferrell doesn’t have a good singing voice.

Dog Obstacle Course

Here, Ferrell cracks on egg of knowledge on Conan fans, informing them that, during his downtime, he really, really, really enjoys training dogs for obstacle courses in shows.

To share his passion with the world, he brought on a few dogs and set up an obstacle course. Though it’s Will Ferrell, and we all know he’s joking, he comes across as genuine right until the moment he points out the tightrope on the course. That could be an issue.

And it is. It turns out that Will Ferrell is absolutely terrible at training dogs, as they just continue to mill about idly once they take the stage. Ferrell adopts his loud, frustrated persona, and a good time is had by all.

As Robert GOULET!

One of Ferrell’s most beloved characters is a caricature of lounge singer Robert Goulet. Will came onto Conan’s Tonight Show in character, constantly mistaking Conan for Johnny Carson, and his New York studio for Johnny’s Burbank one back in the day. Even on SNL, Goulet was one of Ferrell’s more absurd characters, but the new dimensions are shown when he gets the opportunity to improvise and riff with the always-game Conan and Co.

GOULET! LAVENDER!

Will Shaves Conan

After getting yanked from The Tonight Show while he was still forbidden from appearing on TV, Conan grew one of those beards you grow when you backpack through Nepal or when your girlfriend breaks up with you. However, when he finally got the ball rolling on TBS, it was a new beginning, and the beard had to go.

There was no question who would handle the duties. Will Ferrell appears on the show, ostensibly to talk about his new movie, but he quickly tells Conan to “shut the fuck up,” and gets the beard-trimming ball rolling.

Spoiler alert: Ferrell quits about halfway through, leaving Conan with an awesomely hilarious half-beard thing.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Hey! It’s Will Ferrell being outrageous again! This time he’s dressed as a damn Leprchaun. Oh, Will! You’re just outrageous!

It’s a little difficult to keep explaining why these appearances are funny, and describe what’s going on. Will Ferrell showed up at Conan’s show dressed as a leprechaun in a Speedo. It’s funny because people normally don’t do that.

Just watch the damn video.

Archie Comics is trying hard to make sure the Life With Archie comic is hella relevant with people who don’t know what the hell it is. Issue #16 features the same-sex marriage of a gay character who was wounded in Iraq.

I have no problems with same-sex marriage, but this just seems a little overdone. This used to be a comic about watching a stoned kid eat a lot of ice cream while the two hottest girls in town fought over a ginger. When did it become Grey’s Anatomy?

At any rate, Archie is blazing new trails in the world of comics by making it okay to explore gay marriage. All eyes will undoubtedly be on She-Hulk now. You’re not fooling anybody. But when it comes to gay marriage, television was years ahead of the curve, at least when compared to Archie. Here’s a look at the timeline of television’s same-sex marriages.

Roc – “Can’t Help Loving That Man”

Airdate: October 20, 1991

Roseanne and Friends get a lot of credit for featuring television’s first same-sex marriage, but it was actually Fox‘s Roc that bravely pushed that envelope first when Roc’s uncle married his partner.

Northern Exposure – “I Feel The Earth Move”

Airdate: May 2, 1994

Cicely, Alaska’s B&B owners Ron and Erick made honest men out of one another when they wed in this fifth season episode.

Roseanne – “December Bride”

Airdate: December 12, 1995

When Roseanne stepped in to help her boss Leon plan his wedding to Fred Willard, it all almost goes to sh*t. However, Roseanne is able to step in at the last minute and save the day. I still find it rude that Christopher Guest wasn’t invited.

Why not? You're just gonna blow the money on drugs, anyway.

Released in August of this year, Conan the Barbarian failed pretty hard at the box office. Even Sean Hood, one of the screenwriters of the film, wrote a blog about how it felt to see the movie fail, which made me feel slightly bad that it did. Sometimes, you forget the people who make movies actually have feelings and believe in a project. But screw them, the movie sucked.

Well, not really. It wasn’t that bad. In fact, it’s an R-rated action film that probably would have been huge in the 90′s, but not in our cynical-10s (is that what it is? 10s? What about O-10s? That’s what I’m going to use. Try to stop me.)

The DVD and Blu-Ray are sparse on extras, but the ones they have are interesting nonetheless. “The Conan Legacy” is a pretty cool 18-minute history of the character that is really well made. The most interesting comment was by one of the film’s producers saying they cast Jason Momoa, and unknown actor, so they wouldn’t have to have someone who would be compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger. That seems slightly odd considering how anyone who would have been cast would have been compared to Arnold. I understand he is trying to find a more finess way of saying, “We cast an unknown because this movie had to be cheap.”

“Robert E. Howard – The Man Who Would Be Conan” is a short look at the man who created the character. It’s a fun watch. But, the two best features are about staging the fights.

“Battle Royal – Engineering the Action” is a look at how the stunt coordinators worked. It gives you a lot of insight into how they get these intricate fights created and ready to shoot. Spoiler Alert! Editing and many angles makes these fights interesting. Seeing the fights actually being created is funny because the actors are barely making contact and are slow. But it’s great to see the creation and final product, which makes “Staging the Fights” even cooler. The filmmakers actually shot many of the fights scenes in pre-production with stunt doubles and referred to these short films when shooting the actual movie. It’s great to see the stunt double version versus the final version.

The final two special features are audio commentaries, one with the director, Marcus Nispel (which breaks the main commentary rule: never only have one person. It’s very boring and very quiet). The other is with Momoa and Rose McGowan, which really should be called “Everything is About Rose McGowan” because she finds a way to make everything about her. Even scenes she isn’t in are somehow about her. The only thing she doesn’t talk about is the amount of plastic surgeons it took to turn her face into a flat, plastic shell of its former self.

I think Conan is worth giving a chance. It’s campy, gory, and has some decent laughs. Also, some nudity. And that’s always good, right? (No. See About Schmidt).

Wall Street is great... for me to poop on!

Take one look at the protesters in New York, and it becomes immediately clear that anyone, and I do mean anyone (crazies, hippies, rapists, Russell Brand) can “occupy” Wall Street. But it takes a very special person to make Wall Street his bitch. In fact, it takes a dog. Triumph, the Insult comic Dog, to be specific.

On last night’s Conan, which has been filming in New York all week, the mean-spirited mutt took to the streets, mocking the vast array of weirdos he found camped out in the financial district. But he also took time to insult the bankers and stock brokers who work in the area. At one point, a giant inflatable Triumph was used to bang the iconic Charging Bull statue from behind (a.k.a. Doggie Style), a symbolic gesture that’s sure to resonate with many Americans as well as the hoards of confused Japanese tourists randomly passing by.

Conan O’Brien welcomed the Television Critics Association to the set of his new TBS show “Conan.” It may have been the only audience that did not begin the show by chanting, “Co-nan, Co-nan!"

Conan O’Brien welcomed the Television Critics Association to the set of his new TBS show “Conan.” It’s the first time most of them had spoken to O’Brien since NBC, except for Bill Carter who wrote the books on the talk show wars of two generations. It may have been the only audience that did not begin the show by chanting, “Co-nan, Co-nan!” O’Brien joked that that got old “about three weeks ago.”

But seriously, O’Brien appreciates the love and doesn’t expect it to last forever. It won’t become his “Woof woof.” “We can’t even stop it,” O’Brien said. “I think it’s like anything else. It’s going to play itself out over time. The last year has been a crazy journey of discovery and this show will be the same I think. So we’re going to find out as we go. I think we’re playing it out and like I say, it’s an organic process. So I think this show could become a game show in a year. Who knows? I have no idea. I’m as interested as anybody else to find out what’s going to happen.”

The chanting is only one component of the audience that has reinvigorated O’Brien’s hosting abilities. He feels working off of the audience’s energy has brought out his best. “I mean last night’s crowd, it’s a Tuesday in January and they were unbelievable. It feels like it’s got a little bit of a rock n’ roll energy and people have made things and some of them are in costumes. Sometimes it looks like ‘Let’s Make a Deal in here.’ I didn’t design any of this. I don’t know where it’s going but all of us, everybody in this room is facing the complete transformation of our business and you can resist it and hate it and fight it or you can go with it. I’m saying let’s go with it. I go into the crowd more and I do monologues I’ll see people and I’ll engage with them and I’ll go up into the seats sometimes and bring them into it. Last night I’m playing with some guy in the crowd and we’re just seeing where this goes. If it feels good, we do it.”

It works in the writer’s room too. So many people followed O’Brien from NBC that it’s just a love fest on and off stage now. “What happens is a lot of our people came over from the last gig, really a shockingly high number of people were able to stick with us and rode out this last year and I felt just put together this show. There’s a feeling here with everybody. The crew, the staff, a lot of people in their early 20s who are working on the show, we’ve all been through something in the last year so there’s sort of a spirit. There’s a little pirate ship feeling to this show which I love. Everybody has it because we all went through it. None of us knew what was going to happen, were we going to get other jobs, how are we going to make it through this thing? We stuck together and we did. That creates a strong dynamic here at the show that I think is coming through on television.”

Even David Letterman expressed his feelings for O’Brien in a phone call over the holidays. “He wanted to know what I was wearing,” O’Brien joked. “It was just a quick call. We hadn’t spoken for a long time and he just called to basically say, ‘I haven’t checked in on you, I just wanted to make sure that we were good.’ I said, ‘We’ve always been good.’ I have a lot of respect for that guy. I said he didn’t owe me a phone call but I appreciate it and then we chatted about other silly things and that was it. So it was not a lengthy phone call. He’s not a blabbermouth but it was nice. It was just nice to get the call and I made it quite clear to him he didn’t owe me a call but I was happy to talk to him. So it was nice to get it but I wanted to reassure him that he didn’t owe me any call or anything like that.”

However, O’Brien thinks it is still unlikely he would ever have a sit down with Jay Leno. “I don’t think so. There’s nothing to be figured out. We all know the story and we all know what happened. I think it’s better, just life is short. I’ve got kids and a family. I’ve got life to live and I’m really happy here so I don’t think about it too much. And I’m sure he’s busy.”

“Conan” airs weeknights at 11 on TBS.

Conan O’Brien returned to the airwaves last night to prove that you can banish him to basic cable, but you can’t take away what makes him great. And it looks like with ‘Conan,’ he helped TBS finally earn their “Very Funny” slogan.

The show opened with a really slick segment that skewered NBC’s bonkers decision to dick him around. It’s not the end-all be-all of comedy by any stretch, but it displays a sly zaniness that you don’t see in late night television. And it’s light years better than watching Jay Leno ring random Los Angelenos’s doorbells. Just once, I’d like to see him knock on the wrong door and end up in hot water. Like, he accidentally films a paranoid militia-man. Or Gary Busey.

Check out the clip and let us know what you thought about Conan’s first show.

Conan O'Brien put on a five-minute trial run of his upcoming TBS show in a conference room. Here's hoping the production value of the actual show exceeds this one. I know it's not NBC, but paint is so affordable these days. I don't want to ruin the guest since he only stays for 30 seconds, so I'll only say that it causes a BIG BANG THEORY. Diet Coke probably gets more air time than anything else. Hey, someone's gotta pay for those spotlight gels.
Check out "Show Zero" after the jump...

"Don't call me Coco!!!"
This new promo for Conan O'Brien's TBS show shows a new side of Conan. A side that doesn't take any crap. Here we see him pack a vintage car with plastique, illegal fireworks, and popcorn kernals before personally driving it off a cliff. Only way this could be sweeter is if the car was borrowed from the Leno Collection.
Check it out after the jump...

Some new photos from Marcus Nispel's Conan remake have been released and they look pretty good. Bleeding Cool got a look at what Nispel is cooking up and things are shaping up. The sets look pretty intricate and they really captured the sh*thole village aesthetic.
This really is a testament to wizardry of color-correction and special effects. For instance, check out this before and after pic from the set.

Simply amazing.

Conan O'Brien's new TBS show begins on November 8th, and the network is starting to ramp up promotion. In this sexy new ad, Coco prepares for his new gig by washing off his desk. But instead of getting clean, Conan gets down and dirty in a scene reminiscent of Paris Hilton's famously slutty Carl's Jr. ad campaign.
While watching Conan get sprayed with a garden hose was pretty hot, I would have rather seen Jay Leno get sprayed with a fire hose, preferably in the face and genitals. But that's just me. (Coming Soon)

But when I clicked the link and was confronted with the raw animal magnetism that is a shirtless Jason Momoa, something deep inside me was stirred. It was something I hadn't felt since high school gym class, specifically the time I was partnered up with all-state wrestler Tim Nelson for weightlifting. The muscles, the grunting, the squatting: it was all too much for me to bear and I passed out. After staring at the Conan picture for five-minutes straight, I felt the same confusing feelings welling up inside me, and once again I passed out. But this time, instead of waking up to find myself duct taped to a flagpole, I awoke in a hospital bed.
It's so refreshing to wake up and see a story about the non-Tonight Show Conan. Lionsgate has cast the lead for their upcoming remake of the barbarian classic Conan. And the new barbarian is.... some dude! His name is Jason Momoa. You know him. He's in all those Stargate: Atlantis commercials. He's the Lenny Kravitz-looking guy. The one with the smelly hair. On top of that his resume includes being Lisa Bonet's babby-daddy, Baywatch, and Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding. He beat out Twilight's Kellan Lutz and Supernatural's Jared Padalecki for the role based on his running-in-slow-motion prowess. Filming is scheduled to begin mid-March in Bulgaria with Marcus Nispel behind the camera. Say what you will, at least it's not Brett Ratner. We'll keep you updated when the rap-rock accompanied trailer premieres. (Deadline Hollywood)

That's what makes this piece of news so darned interesting. It was announced that Marcus Nispel, the guy who remade both The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the Thirteenth, is on board to direct a remake of Conan. Yeah, it's a lackluster little bit of information but it's good news. Why? Because now we know Brett Ratner isn't touching the movie any more.

BY THE ANVIL OF CROM!

Usually, news about a guy who’s made a career out of directing remakes is not very exciting; it’s kind of annoying. The knock on them is obvious: they’re never as good as the source material, and they’re usually flashy flicks that lack substance.

That’s what makes this piece of news so darned interesting. It was announced that Marcus Nispel, the guy who remade both The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the Thirteenth, is on board to direct a remake of Conan. Yeah, it’s a lackluster little bit of information but it’s good news. Why? Because now we know Brett Ratner isn’t touching the movie any more.

Variety has reported that at one point in time both the Wachowski Brothers (Siblings maybe? I don’t know, anymore) and Robert Rodriguez were being courted before Ratner (the former much more competent than the latter), it is still nice to know…

that anyone other than The Rat is doing a flick that could be potentially cool. Nispel doesn’t seem like a masterful filmmaker or anything, but he’s got that little fact that he didn’t ruin the X-Men franchise going for him in my book.

Honestly, if Brett Ratner’s career was halted by an army of remake filmmakers, well, I’d be very pleased. Even if Conan is awful, Nispel’s effort should be respected by all for ensuring Ratner did not make the movie.
