Upon realizing that he’d accidentally signed on to a horror film, Colin Firth has opted to leave Paddington, the family film that rendered the adorable bear in the creepiest of manners. “After a period of denial, we’ve chosen ‘conscious uncoupling,” says Firth in a statement. The film already has a November 28th release date so now it’s a matter of finding another recognizable British guy to loan his voice and they’ve already got the dad from Downton Abbey in this thing. There’ll also need and actor who doesn’t mind scaring kids. Someone get Bill Nighy on the phone right now. (EW)

When you’re translating a beloved children’s book character into CGI for a big screen adaptation, rule number one should be that you don’t make the character look terrifying. The producers of Paddington have broken that rule.

By giving the cuddly British bear the serene countenance of Colin Firth and combining that with a rain slicker (easily the creepiest of jackets), they’ve created a monster that will kill us where we sleep and suck the marmalade from our bones. The Internet took notice of this and took the appropriate action: by turning Paddington into a disturbing meme. They’ve finally created a bear more terrifying than Pedobear.

In an effort to ensure that no element of your childhood be without a move based on that element, The Weinstein Company gives us Paddington, a live-action/CGI film that follows around that marmalade-lovin’ ursine bastard. The film is of course based on the children’s book A Bear Called Paddington.

He’s voiced by Colin Firth, who is pretty much a less furry Paddington bear in human form anyway.

Lest you treat this film as optional viewing, its release date is December 25th, 2014…so you WILL SEE THIS WITH YOUR FAMILY AND IT WILL BE PLEASANT.

Because we all know the lowest common denominators among families during the holidays are Colin Firth and cartoon British bears.

That’s not up for discussion.

The Coen Brothers have veered once again into remake territory and the results seem to be ugh. A remake of the Michael Caine/Shirley Maclaine 1960′s heist flick, Gambit, brings the Coens aboard as writers only. So they can’t take the brunt of the blame like with The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty. Those this film definitely has the same work-for-hire feel those movies share.

Feel free to watch the trailer, but I should warn you that Cameron Diaz speaks in an over-the-top Southern accent. In other words, don’t watch the trailer.

Clive Owen is one of those actors who excels at both slimy bastards and sympathetic heroes. And he did a little bit of both simultaneously in Spike Lee‘s Inside Man, so it’s not a huge surprise that he’s reportedly been offered the role of the villain in Lee’s remake of the cult Korean thriller Oldboy. But the remake is supposed to feature new characters and somehow be darker than the original (perhaps the producers mean this literally, as in the movie will be lit by candlelight).

If Owen accepts, he’ll be playing the part of the bad guy who will be butting heads against Josh Brolin. And if you’ve seen the original movie, you probably agree that Owen would make a good fit for the upper-class villain of the piece (the role was first offered to Colin Firth, who turned it down). Another role has also been offered to Mia Wasikowska that was turned down by Rooney Mara. Maybe a good alternative title for the American version of Oldboy could be Sloppy Seconds. (The Playlist)

If there was a way to embed mp3s in articles, you can rest assured that you would be listening to “I’m Every Woman” as you read this piece. And it would be LOUD. But the technology just isn’t there yet, so you’ll just have to learn about the announcement of Bridget Jones 3 while playing it in your head.

That’s right, it’s time for Renee Zellweger to get fat and British again, as the script for the third installment is reportedly done and pre-development is underway. They’ve decided to make this one about the love triangle between Zellweger, Colin Firth, and Hugh Grant. That should make for a refreshing change of nothing.

Firth lays out the plot thusly:

“I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can’t have children, I think that’s the way it goes on. So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver [Hugh Grant's character] for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she’s left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her.”

A new Bridget Jones movie that’s all about raising a baby? Pinch me! (/Film)

From the looks of this new trailer, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy looks like it will be this year’s best film about British guys not trusting one another.

Set during the Cold War, Gary Oldman stars as a former MI6 agent to root out a mole in the upper echelons of the agency. Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark StrongToby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham also star. The earlier teaser focused on Cumberbatch’s character whereas this one centers more on Tom Hardy, who first learns of the double-agent and brings the information to the organization. But can he be trusted? I say just fire the whole lot of them.

If you are anything like us then you are reading about the recent success of the US Women Soccer team in the Soccer World Cup, but know absolutely nothing about this thing they call “football” across the pond…and are not sure you should care. However, once we heard that this was the Women’s team our ears perked up, especially when we learned that players on the US Women’s Team tend to take their shirts off after they score a goal. Fortunately there is nothing you can’t learn about life from movies, so we put together a few soccer movies that we think will get you up to speed on why people get so excited about soccer videos in general, and this world cup thing in particular.

Bend It Like Beckham

But that’s a baseball movie, you idiots…right?! Nope. It’s a  soccerphilia fest from the mind of Nick Hornby that came out way before Drew Barrymore lisped her way through—we’ll just come out and say it—a pretty sucky film of the same name. In this Fever Pitch, Colin Firth stars as a one of Hornby’s typical self-absorbed, specifically-obsessed-but-ultimately-changed-by-love male protagonists. His favorite soccer team is the driving force in his life…until he meets the love of his life, who happens to hate the game. Life lesson in this soccer flick? That if you love a team of men obsessively, you can love one woman just as much. And it’s a lot more fulfilling. How sweet.

She’s The Man

Eric Cantona philosophizing in Looking For Eric

Eric Bishop worships two things: Manchester United and soccer legend Eric Cantona. But his life and relationships are in shambles, until one evening he smokes some weed and hallucinates a conversation with Cantona his hero. Suddenly, Canton starts appearing to him in other situations and becomes a sort of invisible life coach for Bishop. He turns his life around, yada yada yada. And the moral is…marijuana actually fixes lives not ruins them? No, no. Looking For Eric clearly isn’t endorsing that, but rather speaks to soccer fans by demonstrating how athletes can be really important and inspirin role models, even for adults. That is, when they’re not inspiring hooligan riots.

Paul Feig‘s adeptness at putting women in embarrassing situations has landed him the chance to direct the third Bridget Jones’s Diary film. The Bridesmaid‘s director is said to be in talks to helm the sequel to the classic romantic comedy. Bridget Jones creator, Helen Fielding, has written a script that would follow Renee Zellweger‘s titular character on her attempts to have a baby.

But nothing is a done deal just yet as it may be tricky to get the film’s stars to return. Renee Zellweger most likely would because she did Case 39, so how’s she going to argue? Colin Firth has an Oscar now which means his dry charm has become a lot more expensive. And Hugh Grant is keeping busy doing… I don’t know, Hugh Grant stuff. So let’s just go ahead and put Jon Hamm in their place in a dual role. (Daily Mail)

Danny Boyle knows what he wants. In this instance it’s Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson for his heist film Trance.

It’s reported that James McAvoy is locked for the lead role of Simon and his X-Men: First Class bestie Michael Fassbender will not be joining the film as believed previously. Boyle has his eye on Firth to fill the role vacated by Fassbender and wants Scarlett for a major supporting role. Though no info about plot or character is given, we can assume they’re all playing sexy thieves who with their fast hands and forbidden passions will steal your diamonds, and perhaps more.

No formal offers have gone out yet but it’s said “who Boyle wants, Boyle gets.” Except Michael Fassbender. (Cinema Blend)

Super 8 drew unexpected backlash from people who need to have opinions about things because they felt the film looked too Spielbergish. However, I doubt that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy will draw criticism for its retro 1970′s English vibe.

The English-language debut from Let The Right One In director Tomas Alfredson, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy stars Gary Oldman as a spy in the British Intelligence community trying to uproot a mole amongst its ranks. He sends British Namey Award Winner 2010 Benedict Cumberbatch to investigate five high-ranked agents to figure out which one it is. It turns into a race against time as the mole blows the cover of the best agents. And Colin Firth looks wicked guilty.

Moving right along, Focus Features has announced a release date for Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson’s new film, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The cast includes a few folks bat-swiped from The Dark Knight Rises, Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy, not to mention Colin Firth and Mark Strong. The spy drama will be released November 18, 2011.

Based on the novel by John Le Carre, Tinker, Tailor tells the story of a spy named George Smiley (Oldman), who must come out of retirement, tasked with finding a mole in British Secret Intelligence Service during the Cold War. This one’s got a lot of Oscar buzz around it, hence the November release. Also getting released that weekend are The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Happy Feet Two, two other serious Best Picture contenders. (Variety)

The world is on tenterhooks to see if Colin Firth has conquered his debilitating stutter in time for his new “crime-comedy” entitled Gambit, which is a little bit like calling your romantic comedy Wolverine. It also stars Cameron Diaz, Stanley Tucci, Cloris Leachman, and Alan Rickman. The movie seems to be something to get excited about, mostly because it was written by the reliable-to-say-the-least Joel and Ethan Coen. Here’s what it’s about:

“Firth plays British art curator Harry Deane, who devises a finely-crafted scheme to con England‘s richest man and avid art collector, Lionel Shabandar, (Rickman) into purchasing a fake Monet painting. In order to bait his buyer, he recruits a Texas rodeo queen (Diaz) to cross the pond and pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.”

Between that synopsis and the Coens’ involvement, this looks like it will be twisty fun. Below you can see the first photo from the movie, featuring Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth – and I promise you, this is 100% authentic, and in no way a fake. Just trust me.

Well hello there, cowpokes! I can tell by that gleam in yer eye that you’re a-lookin’ for casting updates coming out of the Cannes Film Festival. Well saddle up, pardner, because here we go! Yee-haw.

First up out of the corral is Dennis Quaid, who’s joining Jeremy Irons and Bradley Cooper in The Words. Quaid will play “Clay Hammond, a celebrated writer, in the tale in which Cooper’s character, another writer, discovers the price he must pay for stealing the work of another man, played by Irons.” Sounds like a rootin’-tootin’ good time, and also a meditation on creativity and plagiarism. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Next up under the branding iron are cowpokes Orlando Bloom and Nick Nolte, who’ve been cast in “coming-of-age road-trip comedy” Idea in America along with Stanley Tucci and Cristiana Capotondi. (The Hollywood Reporter)

The no. 3 spot on this rodeo is held by Helen Hunt, who’s a-gonna direct and star in romantic comedy Ride. A romantic comedy starring and directed by Helen Hunt? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAW!

Finally, we got England‘s Number 1 Wrangler Colin Firth, who will play the lead role in an untitled comedy to be directed by Dante Ariola from a script written by Becky Johnston. Here’s a plot synopsis, which rolls through your field of vision like a tumblin’ tumbleweed: “Firth plays a man who hates his job and is hated by his ex-wife and son. Feeling he missed his one shot at living the dream, he fakes his death and buys a new identity.” (Deadline)

A new, less “fucky” version of The King’s Speech is coming to theaters on April first. That’s right, say goodbye to your precious fucks, fans of The King’s Speech, because in eight short days, a cut of the film is coming out that will replace all the instances of the word “fuck” with the word “shit,” which is apparently all you need to do to get your film downgraded to a PG-13 rating from an R. The new cut opens on 1000 screens, and it’s no April Fool. Here’s the press release:

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that THE KING’S SPEECH PG-13, the family-friendly version of its Academy Award-winning historical drama about King George VI, will open on 1,000 screens nationwide on April 1, and will be the only version available in theatres. One of the year’s most celebrated, successful and beloved films, THE KING’S SPEECH was honored at the 83rd Academy Awards® with Oscars® for Best Picture, to producers Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin; Best Director, to helmer Tom Hooper; Best Actor, to star Colin Firth; and Best Original Screenplay, to screenwriter David Seidler. The announcement was made by TWC’s President of Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment Eric Lomis.

Said Lomis, “We are thankful to the MPAA for their wisdom and swift action in approving the release of THE KING’S SPEECH PG-13 release. The action enables those to whom it speaks most directly – young people who are troubled by stuttering, bullying and similar trials — to see it.”

The emotional impact of stuttering that was illuminated by THE KING’S SPEECH continues to be a topic of conversation with the recent statements by Vice President Joseph Biden about his own struggles with stammering. The release of THE KING’S SPEECH PG-13 offers families nationwide access to a positive story about stuttering and overcoming obstacles and social stigmas.

When I first heard a movie called Gambit was coming out, my thought was: “oh no, they’re not gonna ruin my favorite X-Men character again, are they?” When I found out it was a comedy written by Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth in a remake of a 1986 British heist film. The film is about the attempted robbery of a rich man’s statue by an art curator (Firth) and a “Texas Rodeo Queen” (Diaz). Mike Hoffman (The Last Station) will direct all this glittery, Oscar-winning talent.

CBS Films has been throwing movies out there like energy-charged playing cards. So far, films like Beastly and The Mechanic haven’t really been hittin the box office that hard, but Gambit might be the new ace up their sleeve.

FYI, my mutant power is making dorky analogies. (ComingSoon)

Judd Apatow still want Paul Rudd to knock up his wife. MTV caught up with the director and his muse Seth Rogen Leslie Mann on Oscars night for an update about the Rudd/Mann-centric Knocked Up spin-off.

“It’s spinning off right now, as we speak,” Apatow told me outside the fancy shmanz Vanity Fair Oscar party Sunday night.

“We’re in rehearsals,” Mann said, adding that her character and Rudd’s character will be seen at a different place in their marriage than in “Knocked Up.”

“We’re really happy now,” she said. “Pete and Debbie are really happy.”

It’s too early in the game to give up plot or additional casting info, but Apatow noted that some familiar faces will be appearing in the film. He also mentioned an actor he’d love to bring in to the fold.

“I’m going to hit on Colin Firth tonight and see if he can play the weird neighbor,” Apatow said. “I think he might do it.”

Seems like he’s only kidding around but I’d love to see Firth cast as the weird neighbor. We already know he can do the requisite stutter.

People sure are loving that Colin Firth. Last night he took home acting’s top prize and he’s picking up more roles than a clumsy baker. Talk about a regular Treat Williams.

Universal has just picked up Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, a film featuring Firth and Tom Hardy. Directed by Let The Right One In director Tomas Alfredson, the adaptation of the classic spy thriller centers around a British spy who must root out a mole within the highest levels of his organization. Oooo, I can sense a lot of intense Firth staring.

Both Summit and The Weinstein Company chased this one hard, but the win went to Universal. The film is currently in post and being prepped for awards season next year. So when you see Tom Hardy at next year’s Oscars with a surprising beard, you’ll know why. (Deadline)

The King’s Speech is expected to clean up this Sunday at the Oscars and in turn, Harvey Weinstein would like the film to clean up at the box office. A PG-13 version of the film will be hitting theaters soon to draw in the tweens. They just looooove Colin Firth.

The film is pretty clean overall save for one scene where Firth issues a frustrated, expletive-filled outburst that would make Kurt Sutter blush. In this re-edit, that has gone bye-bye against the wishes of director Tom Hooper. Next thing you know, they won’t let him cast Andrew “Dice” Clay in his adaptation of Les Miserables. (THR)

There was no overlap though, as Snookered shot in August of 2008, and The King’s Speech was shot in 2009. Imagine the extra stammering that would have come out of Colin Firth if he’d walked onto set and accidentally interrupted a crucial Snookered money shot. The idea machine that is Hollywood has cooked up a real corker of a concept: British diction specialist Colin Firth should star in a remake of My Fair Lady. Miracle of miracles, whoever dreamed that up should get a Bentley. Firth has been pursued for the role of Henry Higgins in the Emma Thompson scripted remake of the Lerner and Loewe musical before, along with a million other batted around names. The studio wanted Hugh Grant, while original director Danny Boyle wanted Daniel Day-Lewis for the role so much that he even dropped out of the project when he couldn’t land him. Carey Mulligan is attached as Eliza Doolittle, a role that at one point was linked to Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and many others. Current director John Madden still wants Firth, and although the actor is next committed to the Coen Brothers scripted Gambit, he’s the top choice for the film.

The film has been delayed for a slew of reasons, from Mulligan’s shooting schedule, to the rights of the source material being tied up in various places. It seems that CBS owns some of it, as do the estates of Lerner and Loewe and also George Bernard Shaw. Regardless, these are not insurmountable issues, and all parties are reasonably confident that they can get the film in theaters by 2013. Colin Firth will just have to take a yea break from winning every award in history. Maybe he can take a vacation or something. A very proper and British vacation. (The Playlist)

Last week we pitted our Best Actress contenders against one another in a sexy battle to the death — but what of the menfolk? This year’s Academy Awards offers an impressive list of Y-chromosome-enhanced thespians duking it out for a Shiny Gold Dude to place on their mantle, including two veterans of last year’s award ceremony. Will Jeff Bridges get the two-peat? Will Colin Firth be v-v-v-vindicated for last year’s loss? Or will one of our young Turks pull off an upset? Let’s brush the green leafy substance off our scales (it’s oregano, I swear!) and weigh the pros and cons.

FRONTRUNNERS

COLIN FIRTH

Pro: Sure, Colin Firth’s a great actor. But if Oscars were handed out for talent alone he’d have taken last year’s trophy for his performance in A Single Man.  However this year Firth has the ace up his sleeve with The King’s Speech: Namely, a disability.  If there’s one thing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences loves more than hookers, cocaine and Scientology, it’s gimps.  Just look at the handi-capable characters stepping off the Best Actor short bus: We have an autistic Dustin Hoffman (Rainman), a palsied Daniel Day Lewis (My Left Foot), a sight-tarded Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman), simple-minded Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), and nuttier-than-a-bagful-of-squirrels Geoffrey Rush (Shine). Seriously, is thi the Academy Awards or the Special Olympics?

Con: Other than that he’s almost too obvious a choice, I don’t really see a chink in the King’s armor.

JAMES FRANCO

Pro: In the last few years James Franco has done a lot to step out of Spider-man’s shadow and establish a reputation as an actor to be taken seriously. He’s shown range (flexing his dramatic chops in Milk and comedic muscle in Pineapple Express), brains (Franco’s currently a PhD candidate at Yale) and quirk (i.e his PoMo ironic stint on “General Hospital”). But 127 Hours was Franco’s acting tour de force. His performance as a hapless hiker trapped in a gorge was so engaging that one forgets that this film was essentially one character and one location. If there’s anyone who can deny Firth’s King his Oscar c-c-crown it’s Franco.

Con: Franco’s performance was impressive but Franc-ly, I don’t think he went far enough.  If he really wanted that Oscar he would’ve gone full-on method and chopped off his own arm. What’s a limb compared to the ultimate show of respect from your peers? De Niro in his prime would’ve done it. And Brando would’ve chopped off not just an arm but a leg too, regardless of whether or not the character was missing any limbs.

DARK HORSE

JESSE EISENBERG

Pro: While the Oscar buzz favors Firth and Franco, there are still more than two dogs in this fight. We should not overlook Jesse Eisenberg who, with The Social Network, finally proved to the world that he’s not just Michael Cera in a Jewish mask.

Con: The biggest strike against Jesse Eisenberg has nothing to do with performance, but rather with the character he portrayed. Mark Zuckerberg – in real life and in The Social Network – is a backstabbing borderline sociopath who’s made billions shilling our personal information to the highest bidder. It’s the Academy Award for Best Actor, not biggest douchebag.

LONG SHOTS

JAVIER BARDEM

How was Bardem’s performance in Biutiful? How am I supposed to know? It wasn’t in English! He could’ve been saying anything for all I know. He could’ve been reading his grocery list, reciting dirty limericks, or just making up nonsense words. Are we really supposed to give the Oscar to a guy who’s essentially babbling? And hey, dude… where’s the bowl cut?

JEFF BRIDGES

Don’t get me wrong, I love The Dude, but Jeff Bridges already took home the Shiny Gold Dude for Best Actor just last year and there’s no way in hell anyone’s giving him an Oscar for playing the same character as the one for which John Wayne won his Shiny Naked Fella. Do you want to be haunted by the Duke’s ghost, commie? Didn’t think so.

ADVANTAGE: Colin Firth.  G-g-g-give that m-m-man a-n-n-n Oscar!

Royal movie critic Queen Elizabeth II saw Academy Award nominated movie The King’s Speech and gave it four and a half corgis. That’s right, she sacrifices dogs whenever she sees a movie. It’s a royal tradition.

The film portrays her father, King George VI, as an uptight stutterer who eventually goes on a ridiculous swearing binge. Up until now, nobody on Team King’s Speech — Colin Firth, director Tom Hooper — knew what the subject of the hidden track on “Abbey Road” thought of their film. Now they know, because The Sun reports:

“[S]he found it moving and enjoyable. She was clearly amused by some of the lighter moments.”

The Queen is also a documented Nintendo fan, so I’m sure she’s greatly anticipating “The King’s Speech: Stutter Busters” for Wii. It comes with a phonograph peripheral.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was also as-gracious-as-can-be-expected about his biopic The Social Network, even appearing on SNL with star Jesse Eisenberg, pretending to be cool about everything. Damn it, why aren’t these people more outraged about Hollywood taking liberties with their lives? Back in the good old days, if William Randolph Hearst didn’t like your movie about him, he would bury your film in the papers and attempt to buy all the negatives so he could burn them. Now that’s what I call a kickass reaction to a biopic. (TheWrap)

“The British numbers are huge because the rating lets families see the movie together,” said Weinstein. “Tom and I are trying to find a unique way to do this that keeps his vision of the movie.”

The King’s Speech is a British period piece about the monarchy AND a triumph over disability story, so it’s a sure thing for the Oscars. This is one you’ll actually want to watch anyway and it doesn’t even play like Oscar bait.

Bertie (Colin Firth), son of King George V (Michael Gambon) and Queen Mary (Claire Bloom), suffers from a stammer. His wife Elizbeth (Helena Bonham Carter) finds him a speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Bertie struggles with Logue’s lessons until he eventually has to take his place as King George VI.

This is the Rocky of speech therapy, complete with training montages. Logue’s methods of relieving vocal tension are clever, some almost 36th Chamber of Shaolin level. Logue makes a good tough love coach in Bertie’s corner too.

The film’s greatest asset is humor. Bertie and Logue are funny and engaging. Their humor is self-deprecating, even when Bertie gets frustrated. This is not the stuffy serious period piece I usually dread reviewing.

Firth’s performance is a careful balance of a realistic portrayal of a stammer, but perfect for dialogue. Don’t keep the audience waiting. Just give it a dramatic pause. It creates suspense. Will he say it? Will it flow? You really see the effort speech patients make. It’s a demoralizing condition and they make a noble struggle, whether it’s Bertie or the little kid in Logue’s waiting room.

Tom Hooper complements the drama with his visual style. He goes in for Raimi angles on Rush and Firth’s faces at pivotal speech moments. Then he leaves an unnatural amount of empty frame space in other scenes. He makes speech visual, so it’s not just talking.

This is the perfect kind of period piece where it’s just old enough to feel exotic but recent enough that it’s not hard to understand. The language is clear, pretty direct and close to modern, just with British accents. The costumes are classy but still look like suits and hats we recognize today as high royal fashion. We recognize the ‘30s era cars from gangster movies so we feel at home in this world.

The family drama of the monarchy was less interesting to me than the speech therapy, but it impacts the speech issue directly so it has to play. That’s just my natural frustration with king and queen movies. When Bertie becomes George VI, the king rules during World War II. That’s something we really “get” in America so we know how important those speeches will be.

The King’s Speech is one of those rare movies that is both important and compelling. Usually when a movie starts out with an important subject, it’s doomed to be pretentious and impenetrable to actual audiences. King’s Speech is relatable and moving. It just happens to also be a true story about a British person of the crown.
