Michael Bay have taken an interest in cocaine. The duo are moving forward on the series “Cocaine Cowboys” that they set up at HBO in 2008.

Writer Michelle Ashford “The Pacific“) has been hired to pen a new pilot based on the 2006 documentary of the same name. Focus is on the rise of cocaine trafficking in Miami in the 1970′s and 1980′s.

Sounds. Awesome.

I expect to see an entire series that looks like the final fifteen minutes of Bad Boys. And I will except nothing less. NOTHING. LESS. (Deadline)

David O. Russell Can’t Decide Which Set He Wants To Scream On Next

David O. Russell has had a pretty good year, thanks to his mostly-acclaimed boxing drama The Fighter. And now it seems he’s having trouble deciding what to tackle next, if this article from The Playlist is to be believed. It lists approximately 8 billion possible next steps for Russell, including but not limited to:

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune – An adaptation of the popular video game.

The Silver Linings Playbook – A comedy/drama possibly starring Anne Hathaway and Bradley Cooper.

2 Guns - A comedic actioner with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.

Cocaine Cowboys - Based on a documentary of the same name about a drug dealer from New York who moves to Miami.

Old St. Louis - A comedy in the same vein as Paper Moon starring Vince Vaughn.

Whew. This is not even mentioning all the projects he’s been attached to and isn’t any longer. Or the untitled Ice Cube “Dirty Harry-like” project. Take some time off, Dave! Who do you think you are? James Franco?

New Marijuana-Smuggling Doc Could Lead To Harshed Mellows

Cocaine Cowboys are now readying Square Grouper for distribution, a film that will dive into the marijuana smuggling trade in the 1970′s. Remember when you had to buy marijuana from a drug dealer, and not a corner store with a little prescription card? So quaint!

The film will investigate the people smuggling the drug and, similar to cocaine cowboys, the authorities in pursuit of them. The title Square Grouper refers to large square bails of marijuana that fisherman would often accidentally reel in. It beats the hell out of a boot or a tire, I guess.

Rakontur also got acclaim for their ESPN 30 for 30 documentary The U, which focused on the wild heyday of University of Miami football. It would seem that these guys don’t really like to leave Florida very much.

For the release of this film, you can’t say these guys don’t know who their audience is. The film premieres at SXSW, then goes on a hazy, hungry 40-college screening tour with the crew presenting and answering questions starting on April 1. The DVD will be released three short weeks later on 4/19, allowing thousands of stoners to take the next day off, get high as hell, then realize that marijuana was actually treated like a drug 35 years ago. Between this and the Bob Marley doc, it’s been a banner week for stoner cinema. Expect a gritty ultimate frisbee movie in 3-D later this fall. (Variety)
