An incomplete retrospective on the fast and loose awards ceremony that is the Golden Globes.

While the Golden Globes might be the second most prestigious film awards out there, they’ve always existed in the shadow of the Oscars. However, what the Golden Globes may lack in terms of respect, they more than make up for in spontenaity, having embraced a culture of improvisation and spontaneity that their older brother continues to condemn.

With the news of the nominees today, let’s look back at some of the most controversial and entertaining moments during the Golden Globe ceremonies over the years.

1982 – Richard Attenborough

I would like to start off the list with Richard Attenborough’s now-infamous “Ghandi sucks” speech. Upon winning the award for Best Director for the epic biopic of the Indian icon, Richard Attenborough held his award to the sky in triumph, then, smiling, said, “I guess this means I can finally stop talking about fucking Ghandi 24 hours a day.”

He then broke into an offensive Indian accent which is now believed to have been the inspiration for Apu on The Simpsons, during which the cameras cut to Sir Ben Kingsley in the audience, who appeared to be laughing uproariously throughout the insensitive rant.

1990 – Ted Danson

Ted Danson receives his second Golden Globe award for his performance as Sam in Cheers. He gives a gracious and thoughtful acceptance speech, only to have it overshadowed by popping an enormous “fear boner” halfway through his acceptance. Mortified, Danson stalls and stammers onstage until Clint Eastwood emerges from the audience to escort him off stage. According to a stagehand they passed walking offstage, Clint Eastwood whispered to Danson, “One way or another, you’re going to have to get rid of that thing.”

Both actors disappear from the public eye for six weeks, reappearing together in a little-seen “Tour Nova Scotia!” television commercial.

(Note: Following this incident, the Awards producers worked to buck the notion that the Golden Globes were the “Deadwood of awards ceremonies” by sedating all nominees in attendance. It is for this reason that there was little excitement in the awards until the Department of Justice put an end to the practice in 2003.)

Seven of the most notable men and woman Hoover had in his crosshairs.

Clint Eastwood‘s epic flim J Edgar hits theaters this weekend, painting a grim portrait of legendary FBI director J Edgar Hoover. It’s appropriate that Hollywood has finally produced a biopic focusing on Hoover’s life, since he spent so much of it obsessing over film and TV actors, producers, and writers. Along with monitoring the production of such FBI based shows as The Untouchables and The FBI, Hoover reportedly targeted much of Tinseltown for what he considered “subversive activities.” In the years since Hoover’s death, evidence has come to light showing that Hoover investigated, and occasionally persecuted, any Hollywood celebrity who crossed him. Here are seven of the most notable Hollywood icons Hoover had in his crosshairs.

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin is widely considered one of the greatest comedic performers to have ever lived. Unfortunately J. Edgar Hoover wasn’t known for his sense of humor (except that time he wore white after Labor Day). Chaplin was known for supporting left-wing causes, and this led Hoover to bar his re-entry in to the Untied States after Chaplin attended the London premier of the film “Limelight” in 1952. Chaplin took the hint and made himself comfortable in Europe for the remainder of his life, except for his return to the U.S. in 1972 to accept an honorary Academy Award. This occurred one month before Hoover’s death, which makes it one of the coolest “f*ck you” moments in history.

Jean Seberg

Actress Jean Seberg appeared in everything from “Breathless” to “Airport.” Along with being well regarded by critics and audiences, she was a major supporter of The Black Panthers. Hoover wasn’t on board the soul train, apparently, and in 1970 he had false stories planted in the media accusing Seberg of infidelity. This occurred during Seberg’s first marriage and pregnancy, and preceeded the death of her infant child and her eventual suicide in 1979. So in addition to developing law enforcement techniques for the 20th century, J. Edgar Hoover also paved the way for the Internet bully.

Why isn't Batman doing something about the Zetas?

A couple weeks ago, Mexican drug traffickers known as the ‘Zetas’ dumped 35 bodies onto a street in Veracruz, marking a new level of terror in the state. That terror has spawned a new level of justice – the ‘Zeta Killers‘, an unidentified vigilante group aimed at getting rid of the Zetas by any means necessary. To make matters worse, the authorities announced they would crack down on any vigilante violence that acts outside the law.

Though I’d like to think these ‘Zeta Killers’ can get the job done, the existence (and placement) of their water bottles is throwing me off. So, in the event they can’t do it, let’s see who easily could.

Batman – The Dark Knight

This is a no brainer. Batman has vigilante violence down to a science; he also knows how to coax members of the law on to his side. If he’s able to sneak into communist China undetected, there’s no reason why he couldn’t sneak into Veracruz in the same fashion. This would also give him an excuse to snag a Zeta and scream “Where were the other drugs going?!?”

Creasy – Man on Fire

Not only is Creasy a demented lunatic, he knows his way around Mexico. If he’s able to find kidnappers in big, bustling Mexico City, he can easily find drug traffickers in Cuernavaca. And it doesn’t hurt to have Tony Scott‘s neurotic 360 camera spins and Trent Reznor‘s beats blasting in the background.

Looks good. Can't wait until Taylor Lautner stars in a Dick Cheney biopic.

I’d never known that J. Edgar Hoover and Batman were so similar until I watched this trailer for J. Edgar. Both committed themselves to ridding society of gangsters and evil-doers. Both took the fight in both hands when the downtrodden weren’t strong enough to rise. And both enjoyed to play dress up.

Leonardo DiCaprio and a balding cap star as the FBI director in a story that spans several decades. The 987th film from celebrated director Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar will hit theaters just in time for awards season by opening wide on November 11th. Though it’s likely to face some strong competition from Darren Lynn Bousman‘s 11-11-11.

Will Leo be able to brood while performing "jazz hands?"

It’s becoming pretty clear that Leonardo DiCaprio is a serial monogamist when it comes to directors, though he di break the chains of love to work with Chris Nolan on Inception.

While filming J. Edgar with director Clint Eastwood, there is word that Clint is sweet-talking Leo into joining the cast of A Star Is Born, Eastwood’s next directing gig. This would be a big change for DiCaprio, who has made a blockbuster career out of playing intense, brooding characters, the type you normally don’t find in musical remakes.

If Leo joins the film, there is little question he would play the lead, a has-been star performer who takes an up-and-comer (Beyonce) under his wing, only to fall in love with her.

With J. Edgar still shooting, the casting decisions here aren’t terribly pressing, but it’s a safe bet that Eastwood would like to lock down DiCaprio before they go their separate ways after filming ends.

This project is getting weird so gradually, it’s almost hard to notice. (Deadline)

The film, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, opens with a terrifyingly realistic Tsunami destroying a Japanese resort. The film, out of DVD tomorrow in the states, opened last month in Japan, and it seems only fair to end its Japanese release in light of the tragedy that has befallen its people.
Stephen Root should be in more movies, so this is good news.

Character actor Stephen Root (Red State) has a way of turning up in unlikely places, especially now that he’s escaped from the comedy ghetto of his earlier work. Now, he’s been added to the already-in-production J. Edgar from drama ghetto denizen Clint Eastwood.

He’s joining a pretty impressive cast, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the titular role of FBI head J. Edgar (Hoover), The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer as J. Edgar‘s “companion” Clyde Tolson, and Judi Dench as J. Edgar’s mother.

All right-thinking film fans should be excited about this, because Stephen Root is one of the most fascinating people to watch in movies today. And if you’re skeptical about his ability to be in serious dramas, see his recent work in No Country For Old Men and the TV series”Justified.” (via The Playlist)

Matthew Vaughn is apparently fed up with working with little kids in Kick-Ass and teenagers in X-Men: First Class so now he wants to do a super-hero movie about old people. He wants his next project to be The Golden Age, about elderly super-heroes in a retirement home. Cool, it’s like Bubba Ho-Tep but with super-heroes instead of Elvis, JFK, and an ancient mummy. Upgrade? But Vaughn isn’t skimping on ambition when it comes to his vision for the film:

“His wish list is Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, and Warren Beatty to play the retired superheroes who help out their grandchildren when their middle-aged parent screw up the world.”

Right. I’d be incredibly surprised if he got 1 of those 3 names (and it would have to be Nicholson), but there’s now way in the universe he’ll get all 3. Aim a little lower, Matt – How do Mickey Rooney, Dick Van Dyke, and “The Macho Man” Randy Savage sound? (via Deadline)

It's the squinting and the cigarette. Man looks as straight as an arrow.

Here’s a first look at Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar. The film explores Hoover’s closeted homosexuality and his relationship with Clyde Toulson, played by the Winklevie, Armie Hammer. Tell me, does the man below look gay to you? The way he squints and lets that cigarette dangle from his lip. Straight as an arrow. But I suppose looks can be deceiving. Toulson didn’t give him the name “Hoover the Vacuum” for no reason. You’ll have to wait for the movie to see if my tasteless joke makes it in. I bet Eastwood cuts it.

Edgar Hoover biopic.

The promising-looking J. Edgar also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ed Westwick and Ken Howard, but let’s be real here. None of those actors have boobs (that I’m aware of, at least), and none of them have simulated lesbian sex on film (unless Westwick was in a weird student film or something). That’s where Academy Award nominated Naomi Watts comes in. She’ll offer a nuanced, yet emotional take on J. Edgar Hoover’s loyal secretary, and a willingness to put those lovely boobs in front of a camera. Awesome.

Charlize Theron was rumored to be the front runner for the role, but hopefully she’ll be flashing her boobs to aliens in Prometheus, the new almost-Aliens movie by Ridley Scott.
A fourth film version of A Star Is Born has been announced, and the players involved run from the obvious to the totally, mind-blowingly surprising.

A fourth film version of A Star Is Born has been announced, and the players involved run from the obvious to the totally, mind-blowingly surprising. The female lead has been announced as Mrs. Jay-Z herself, Beyonce, which should surprise no one. Given her vocal stylings and her pedigree for musical performance on the big screen in Dreamgirls, she’s an accesible, talented selection.

The announcement as Clint Eastwood as director of the musical is borderling jaw-dropping. He had earlier expressed an interest in working with more female-driven stories, but to do so in this capacity is shocking. He has proven capable of tackling most any genre in the book, but when examining the trio “Clint Eastwood, Beyonce, musical,” one of those things is not like the others. Just hearing him say “Beyonce” in his next interview has me giggling already. Warner Bros. made the announcement today, but no word is available on the schedule or release dates, though rumors are shooting will start in the fall.

For those not familiar with the three previous iterations of A Star Is Born, the story is essentially a love affair between an alcoholic star in the twilight of their career and a young star on the rise. While no roles have been assigned with the casting news, it’s a safe assumption that Beyonce will play the latter character, which begs the question of who will play the other role. Hugh Jackman is probably sitting by his phone right now with sweaty palms. (Deadline)

It would seem that Josh Lucas has an affinity for period pieces. Or period pieces have an affinity for Lucas. Either way, he’s in a lot of them these days. He has just signed on to play aviator Charles Lindbergh in the upcoming Clint Eastwood-directed biopic J. Edgar, with DiCaprio playing the titular role. What does Charles Lindbergh have to do with former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover? I have not the foggiest idea, but one thing’s for certain: If Josh Lucas was cast to play him, then Charles Lindbergh must have been a very, very handsome man.

Not content sticking to one historically significant character per year, Lucas is also in the running to be no less than Honest Abe himself in the much-anticipated film adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Lucas seems like an odd pick to play Lincoln, but the entire premise of the movie seems odd, so who knows what will work and what won’t.

Further solidifying the assertion that Lucas has caught “Lincoln Fever,” Lucas’ next role will be opposite Matthew McConaughey in The Lincoln Lawyer, about a lawyer who practices out of the back of his Lincoln automobile. Josh Lucas: One-stop shopping for all your cinematic Lincoln-related needs.
Clint Eastwood has confirmed that Dame Judi Dench will star in his upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic, J. Edgar. The director also claims that Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron are likely to appear in the film.

“The script is a very good script and we were all preparing it and he [DiCaprio] liked the script. He actually volunteered for it… We think she [Theron] will be in the film. And Judi Dench is definitely in the film and there we are.”

I guess it should come as no surprise that Dench is on board. After all, who else could pull off such a convincing Hoover? Yeah, I know that was a cheap shot, but the Roy Cohn joke I had planned would have flown straight over your heads, so let’s just put it behind us and call it a day.
Government bureaucracy isn’t normally depicted as the sexiest of career paths, but Charlize Theron might soon change that. She’s been offered the role of Helen Gandy, eccentric FBI man J. Edgar Hoover’s personal assistant, in Clint Eastwood’s greatly anticipated Hoover biopic, with Leo DiCaprio already cast as J. Edgar himself. Also in talks to join the cast is Armie Hammer, the guy who played those rich, blond twins a.k.a. The Winklevi in The Social Network. He would portray Clyde Tolson, Hoover’s right-hand-man and rumored lover. Eastwood previously offered the part of Tolson to professional crazy person Joaquin Phoenix, who reportedly turned it down after learning that the role would require him to do more than just stare at things intensely.

Hereafter is a Final Destination movie with the air of respectability that Clint Eastwood commands, but absolutely no fun. Clint Eastwood doing Final Destination may sound awesome, but this is a movie just designed to make you feel miserable.

French television reporter Marie LeLay (Cecile De France) survives a disaster in South America and has a near death vision. Pre-teen British twins Marcus and Jason (Frankie and George McLaren) have a heroin addict for a mother and questions about what happens when you die. George Lonegan (Matt Damon) is a psychic who has the answers, but doesn’t give them anymore, except for when his brother Billy (Jay Moher) talks him into reading a friend so the audience can see what he does.

This isn’t one of those cathartic movies like The Notebook or Monster’s Ball where the film actually deals with dark subjects in a productive way. These three stories are just plodding, mundane sorrow. Oh, look at all the tragedy befalling those cute, wise-beyond-their-years kids. Look at the burden this power places on George. Look how spiritual doubts tear Marie apart.

Also, the three stories are just boring. They really milk the druggie mom well into the second act. Come on, already. To get out more, George takes a cooking class where he’s paired with Melanie (Bryce Dallas Howard). As these two sad losers get to know each other’s sadness, you realize there are still two other awful stories to get back to.

Billy is purely a device to give exposition about George. Every time he appears, he mentions all the experiences George had in the past, in the context of “this time will be different” but it’s still artificial. The pain a true psychic would feel facing grieving moms could be poignant. It was when that subject was dealt with in The Gift. Just tossing in a throwaway scene here is cheap.

The big disaster is presented in that matter of fact no frills Eastwood style. The CGI still looks fake, especially in the muted tones in which he shoots film. It’s a scary accident though. Those people are in trouble. The other near death experiences are so contrived they wouldn’t even belong in the prologue of a “Six Feet Under” episode.

The film makes no contribution to the spiritual movement. In fact, it sets the movement back by removing any possibility from it. It’s just vague enough so they don’t have to offer any real inspiration. Yet they specify something with the blurry Hereafter-vision. Then they try to get away with a childlike point of view, as if it’s all innocent. Listen, if you’re going to offer a philosophy, then commit to it. If you’re not, you’d better ask some more probing questions than this movie does.
Insert penises here.
Now that's he's officially not actually crazy or a rapper, Clint Eastwood has been squintily-eyeing Joaquin Phoenix as his boy-toy. It's not what you think, you guys. He just wants to watch he and Leonardo DiCaprio make out a bit. Maybe some ass-play. And he's going to film it. But don't worry, it's totally on the up and up.
Eastwood wants Phoenix to play Clyde Tolson, the rumored lover of J. Edgar Hoover in the Hoover biopic that he is setting up. Neither DiCaprio nor Phoenix have agreed to appear in the film yet (or the ass-play), but how could they turn this down? They sounds like a complex roles in a really interesting film. One that I plan on watching (when my girlfriend is out of town). (Vulture)

Warner Bros has dropped the new trailer for Clint Eastwood‘s Hereafter. It tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. One of them is Matt Damon, who talks to the dead. Another is French journalist, who has a near death experience by almost drowning. And the last is a London schoolboy, who loses someone close to him and wants answers. He asks Damon for help and gets yelled at. Don’t you know that the power he possesses is a curse, not a gift?! Scram, Kid!

Aw, don’t worry. I’m sure he’ll eventually contact his dead whomever for him.

Hereafter materializes in theaters October 22, 2010.

Check out the trailer after the jump…
