Are you really going to argue with scientists?

The post A Look At ‘The Kraken’ Throughout Film History appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Some scientists now speculate that the Kraken may not have been as mythical as we’d always thought. The discovery of ichthyosaurus bones in a deep sea cave heaped in strange patterns, supports the theory that an enormous Triassic-era octopus creature existed and fed upon giant sharks. And probably caveman pirates, too.

What does this all mean? Answer: the beach is closed! Get out of the water! RUN!!

In honor of this discovery, we’ve decided to take a look at the Kraken’s appearances throughout film history. And seriously, we’re canceling our annual Screen Junkies Disney Cruise.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

When the Kraken was released in 2010′s remake of Clash of the Titans, it served as a testament to how far special effects and computer-generated animation had really come. Resembling a Rancor with thrashing tentacles, this made-over Kraken easily stood out as the coolest part of a tepid remake. Apart from Liam Neeson‘s epic beard, of course.

Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep

Though filmed 25 years after the original Clash of the Titans, this TV movie pulled off a less realistic rendering of the beast. Also, showing the death scenes of your main cast in the trailer is probably not the best move when making a horror movie.

You know how trailers often use phrases like, “from one of the producers of Lethal Weapon,” or “from the 3rd Assistant Director of Alvin and the Chipmunks…” to trick audiences. Well, I seriously hope the trailer for the film Wrecking Ball, an in-development feature from director Beatrice Leterrier, begins like:

“From the wife of the guy who brought you Transporter 2…”

Beatrice Leterrier, wife of Clash of the Titans director Louis Leterrier, is set to direct a dramedy about a family who has to deal with “the awful memories of a tragic event that occurred 20 years ago.” From that description, it doesn’t sound like there will be as many gunfights, explosions and Hulks as her husbands’ movies, so anyone going in looking for big action will surely be disappointed. However, Eva Mendes is attached to star, and that’s something her husband’s fanbase might enjoy.

Actually, although this is Mrs. Leterrier first feature, we’re sure she’s not depending on her husband that much at all. She’s got a lot of directing experience from shooting commercials and videos in Europe. Of course, if the tragic event in the family’s past is grandpa getting infected with a time-sensitive virus, we’ll know whose note that was. (Collider)

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, Clash of the Titans 2.

I just think we can improve on it. I think the first one, we kind of let down some people. And yeah, I totally agree. The only point of doing a sequel is either the audience demands it or you believe you can better the first one. What we’re setting out to do with this one — the writers and the director and myself — is improve.

If the only goal is to improve on the original, I’m fairly certain that can be accomplished. After all, unless they do a time-travel crossover with Sex and the City, or turn it into an anti-bullying parable, it can’t be any worse. (Moviefone via Collider)

Warner Bros is aiming high for the sequel to Clash Of The Titans. But maybe they’re aiming a little too high.

In news from the Land Of Make Believe, Production Weekly reports that the studio would like to put Javier Bardem and James Franco in silly wigs and robes for Wrath Of The Titans. I don’t think there’s anyway this is going to happen. It’s one thing to get Liam Neeson because HE. WILL. DO. ANYTHING. But both Bardem and Franco are enjoying Oscar-buzz for Biutiful and 127 Hours. It’s doubtful that they’ll flush that away so quickly. Then again, it is a chance to work with the director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

Also, unlike the first film, Clash of the Titans II will supposedly have a plot mapped out before shooting begins. (Spoiler Alert) Hopefully this sequel will avoid some of the pitfalls of its predecessor. For example, one of the worst scenes from Clash of the Titans was the ending, when Zeus randomly resurrected a character who had died earlier in the film. Resurrection? Talk about an unbelievable cop out? No wonder no one worships Zeus anymore.

Clash of the Titans
PG-13, 118m., 2010
Cast: Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelson, Jason Fleming with Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson
Directed by Louis Leterrier
Screenplay by Travis Becham, Phillip Hay, and Max Manfredi based upon 1981 screenplay by Beverly Cross

Clash of the Titans is 300 for 12-year-old boys: a fast paced Saturday morning cartoon on Greek mythology. Based upon a 1981 movie of the same name, Clash of the Titans tells of Perseus, the young half god/half human son of the God of the Heavens — Zeus — and his quest to behead the Snake Goddess Medusa in order to save the Greek city of Argos from destruction by his evil uncle, the God of the Underworld — Hades (played by Ralph Fiennes in yet another one of his demonic hissing roles) — and his giant sea monster The Kragen.

Joining Perseus on his journey through the river Styx and into Medusa’s layer are the stoic bad ass Draco (Bond villain Mads Mikkelson), the fiery oracle Lo (Bond girl Gemma Atherton) and the disfigured minion Calibos.

Sadly for those who enjoyed the original ’81 flick with all its Ray Harryhausen stop motion wizardry, the tin owl Bubo does have a cameo but is quickly put back in his cage for this journey.

Worthington as the forsaken demigod proves like he has in the past with Avatar and Terminator Salvation to be a good image for this day and age’s new action hero. On screen he has quick athletic instincts, can say a silly line like “Not on this planet you won’t!” or “Damn the Gods!” with ful conviction, and pull off a good running war cry like his hero and fellow Aussie actor, Mel Gibson.

Where Clash of the Titans falls on its sword is the 3D. The film was shot in standard 2D and at the last minute given the 3rd dimensional gimmick to pull in more money at the box office. The 3D glasses are more than anything a distraction as many of the action scenes are in standard play and only make your eyes strain as scorpions and snakes crawl on to the screen.

Another thing that will strike a blow to Greek Mythology purists in the audience are the wasting of other Olympic Gods, like Zeus’s brother, Poseidon (Danny Huston), who has but one line in the whole movie and makes you wonder if the rest of his performance was left on the cutting room floor or if the filmmakers’ hands were tied behind their backs. Last month’s kids-tailored Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief had stronger copyrights to the Gods of Olympus than this more mature swords and sandals epic.

While, Clash of the Titans may not appeal to the older more scholarly crowd, it does make its way up the river of Styx at least halfway before sinking into the Saturday morning matinée abyss.

Grade: C+

‘Clash of the Titans’ in 3D Maybe http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/clash-of-the-titans-in-3d-maybe/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/clash-of-the-titans-in-3d-maybe/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Those of you who prefer Sam Worthington to protrude unnaturally from the screen may be in luck. In the wake of Avatar's box office death-grip, Warner Bros executives are now considering converting the epic to 3D. Within the next 10 days, they will screen a few converted scenes and then make the call whether the full conversion is worth it.A possible reason for the upgrade is that DreamWorks Animation’s big kid-friendly feature How to Train Your Dragon is also releasing over the March 26th weekend. If Titans wants a bid at number one, they'll need the higher-priced tickets. But between Dragon and Avatar (which will probably still be crushing all who oppose it) will there be enough 3D screens?Like Warners, I'm not 100% on-board with the conversion. At first, it seems like a good idea to have Liam Neeson's Kraken swinging in your face. But, I don't know. It might just be too much Kraken. (THR)

Second ‘Clash of the Titans’ Trailer Releases the Kraken http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/second-clash-of-the-titans-trailer-releases-the-kraken/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/second-clash-of-the-titans-trailer-releases-the-kraken/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Susan Boyle makes her feature film debut. Just in time for Avatar, we have a new Clash of the Titans trailer that absolutely defenestrates subtlety. It's essentially the teaser trailer with all the bells and whistles added. In it we see giant scorpians, Zeus, Hades, sand people, lava, dudes yelling, Medusa, Pete Postlethwaite, Pegasus, those helmets with mohawks on top, and palm eyeballs. But the real spectacle is Liam Neeson's Kraken. It's much larger than rumored. Clash of the Titans damns the Gods on March 26th, 2010. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Holy crap, I am pumped! I was hoping for giant scorpians or mutant sand-people, but I never expected both. Not to mention all the leaping. I don't think I've ever seen so much leaping and bounding in one single minute. Sam Worthington jumps into canyons, over canyons, around canyons, and there's usually fire trailing him. The official synopsis for the film is that it follows Perseus on his quest to battle Medusa and the Kraken in order to save the Princess Andromeda. Hey, whatever, there's rock music accompanied by a symthony orchestra. It's really the only way to score a brutal battle between the Gods. And if I'm not mistaken, is that Slash playing in the desert?
