Director David Yates is looking to cool his heels with a smaller project now that Harry Potter has taken his final bow. If Warner Bros allows him to take a breather, he’ll be directing the Al Capone biopic Cicero, now starring Tom Hardy.

Hardy’s currently filming The Dark Knight Rises and then he’s headed over to Mad Max: Fury Road. And Yates may be attached to both The Stand and Fables. Both are pretty busy and in-demand guys. I’d love to see this come together though. So if they want to see this happen, they’d better move quick. Cicero focuses on Capone’s rise to power in Chicago but there is franchise potential which means we’d get to see Tom Hardy go mad with syphilis some day. On-screen, guys. (Vulture)

‘Ness/Capone’ Project Proves Movie Trends Aren’t Always Awful http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/nesscapone-project-proves-movie-trends-arent-always-awful/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/nesscapone-project-proves-movie-trends-arent-always-awful/#comments Thu, 28 Apr 2011 00:23:20 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=209349 One more in an onslaught of mob movies sure beats all that vampire crap that wouldn't go away.

Well, it appears that studios are once again hip to the fact that some viewers really enjoy compelling stories and contextual violence. For that reason, it appears as though mob movies are back in full swing with the latest being Ness/Capone, a take on the cat-and-mouse relationship that is decidedly different from DePalma’s The Untouchables. Ness/Capone seems to suggest a more taunting, prideful dynamic between the G-Man and the mob boss.

Of course, because it’s not possible for Hollywood to have just one of any type of film in development at a time, we feel obligated to report that Warner Bros. has gotten cracking on Cicero, a Capone film that outlines his rise to power, which also sounds kind of awesome. David Yates, director of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has expressed interest in Cicero, though he’s not yet attached.

Warner is also getting dirty with Gangster Squad, which is a historical mob pic that focuses on LA kingpin Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn) and also will star Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin.

Rather than promoting a clear favorite, I really just hope all three of these get made. They sound awesome.  (Deadline)

Warner Brothers Wants Sean Penn To Know It Feels Good To Be A Gangster http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/warner-brothers-wants-sean-penn-to-know-it-feels-good-to-be-a-gangster-2/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/warner-brothers-wants-sean-penn-to-know-it-feels-good-to-be-a-gangster-2/#comments Wed, 30 Mar 2011 19:18:26 +0000 Joseph Gibson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=204520 Can gangster movies possibly be popular with modern audiences (Yes)?

Warne Brothers is a studio that knows gangster movies. They pioneered the form back in the 30s, and now it seems like they’re going to the well again, with two separate gangster movies reportedly in the works. Can gangster movies possibly be popular with modern audiences? I guess we’ll have to wait and see– no, I’m now being told that yes, they can.

The one farthest along is Gangster Squad. Set to be directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer. They key role here is the “gangster” of the title, Mickey Cohen, which the studio wants to be played by Sean Penn. Cohen’s a juicy part too, a charismatic gangster who was both a shameless publicity hound (he participated in a LIFE magazine profile) and a violent criminal. Ryan Gosling is also being sought as a cop who tries to bring Cohen to justice.

The other project is called Cicero, which is about the infamous Al Capone’s years as a youngster – material that’s already been covered in part on the HBO series”Boardwalk Empire.” This one is reportedly the object of David Yates‘ interest, who would be looking for a “rebound project” after the last Harry Potter movie is finished. From boy wizards to Al Capone – I guess it’s no less likely than the career path of Zack Snyder. (via Deadline)
