We probably all put the news of an Ed Helms-starring Vacation reboot far in the back of our minds after hearing it, but the film is becoming more and more real every day. It’s now slated to being shooting in September, and it won’t just be Ed Helms with a camcorder in his garage.

Nope. The producers of the franchise of Chevy Chase films have cast, in addition to Helms as grown-up son rusty, Christina Applegate as his wife, Chris Hemsworth as his sister Audrey’s husband, and Charlie Day with a small part as a rafting guide.

So there’s gonna be rafting? Sweet!

Of course, Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are expected to make cameos, though what the hell they’re going to do remains a mystery. Probably just hang around the old folks home or something, talking about that cat in the Jell-O mold.

Pulling a page from the CBS sitcom casting playbook, New Line is in talks with Christina Applegate to have her star opposite Ed Helms in their Vacation update.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone writing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are directing the sequel/reboot. The story follows Helms as the adult version of Rusty Griswold who embarks on his own bungled vacation. Applegate will play his wife whom THR hints may be growing tired of him. It’s the singing all the time, I bet. Enough with all the singing Ed Helms.

Original stars Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are rumored to also reprise their characters because they would just find another venue to do so anyway.

Helms can next be seen in The Hangover III and Applegate will appear in the highly-anticipated Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Beyond that, you’ll likely be able to see them appear together in Old Navy commercials thirty years from now.

You’ve got to hand it to NBC. In the face of overwhelming adversity and ubiquitous ridicule, they keep plugging along. Picking up new shows, renewing and cancelling old ones…it’s almost as if they don’t realize the hardships they’re facing on a day-to-day basis. Up above you’ll see a clip from “Up All Night,” starring Will Arnett and Christina Applegate, with more clips from more new shows down below, including “Whitney,” starring comedian Whitney Cummings, “Free Agents,” starring Hank Azaria, “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” starring Laura Prepon on a Chelsea Handler-like character (!), and more. Won’t you watch them? If not for me, then for NBC. Then, after that, you’ve got your dramas.

Now that you’ve gotten comedy, the lowest form of entertainment, out of the way – it’s time for the dramas. Below we have clips for shows like “Prime Suspect,” “The Playboy Club,” the Inception-inspired “Awake,” and more.

There you have it! If you start them now, you might be able to finish before Monday morning.

NBC wants some lady action, but not the awesome kind that involves sex with hot ladies. Judging by their recent round of pick-ups, NBC is skewing more towards the vaginally-inclined viewer in 2011-2012. Here’s what’s been picked up:

- “Up All Night” is a single camera comedy, starring Christina Applegate as a working mother who never thought she’d be a mom, but guess what: she totally is. Maya Rudolph and Will Arnett co-star, with Emily Spivey and Lorne Michaels executive producing. Network executives are convinced that one day, Arnett will star in a ratings-generating sitcom. It has been foretold by the sitcom elders.

- Steven Spielberg came up with the idea for “Smash,” a drama about a group of musical folk producing a Marilyn Monroe show on Broadway. It’s been described as”Glee” for adults, so please keep it the hell away from me. Starring Debra Messing and Katharine McPhee, Spielberg co-wrote the pilot with Theresa Rebeck. I’ll tune into Spielberg’s other show instead.

- Based on her stand-up routine, Whitney Cummings‘ cleverly titled multi-camera comedy “Whitney” is about the trials and tribulations of a young couple in a committed relationship. I’m guessing someone’s mother on that show will ask why they’re not married. Laughter will then ensue.

- Maria Bello stars in “Prime Suspect,” a female NYC detective trying to “make it” in a male-dominated precinct. We’re all rooting for you, girlfriend. It’s based on a British mini-series starring Helen Mirren.

Review: Hall Pass http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-review/review-hall-pass/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-review/review-hall-pass/#comments Fri, 25 Feb 2011 15:11:41 +0000 Fred Topel http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=29725 It’s not golden era Farrellys like Kingpin but it’s good.

I went into Hall Pass thinking I’d have to accept the stereotype and appreciate what comedy could be mined from it, if any. Personally, I don’t have a desire to not be in a committed relationship. But, I know there’s this public fantasy about getting a free pass, so that could be funny. The film actually has a clever perspective and good values.

Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are married men in a rut, or two separate ruts to be accurate. Rick’s wife Maggie (Jenna Fischer) hears about hall pass from her friend Dr. Lucy (Joy Behar). It’s actually designed to make the men appreciate their wives when they inevitably try and fail to seduce young hotties.

Already this is a pro-relationship movie. It’s manipulative but the idea is to reinforce the value on monogamy. The misguided intention of that is funnier than any bickering opposites attract rom-com. Rick doesn’t want the pass. I’m with that. Fred’s more eager when his wife Grace (Christina Applegate) follows suit but you know he’s going to learn his lesson. Sudeikis is the ultimate comedy buddy. He’s the perfect instigator but never obnoxious.

The big joke is not to have a raucous wife-free party, but rather that these guys are total posers. Just the introduction of “Day 1” is hilarious. Then the delays and the setbacks take up half the week. The film doesn’t overstay the premise. They do the joke and then cut to the next development. Old guys get tired, boom. They suck at the bar scene, boom. The guys who want that party fantasy may be disappointed, but it speaks to me.

The group of friends is really funny. Flats (J.B. Smove), Gary (Stephen Merchant), and Hog-Head (Larry Joe Campbell) make a classic group of funny companions, even though they unfortunately disappear halfway through. The plot kicks in a little with Rick’s real prospect, Leigh (Nicky Whelan), but it’s always on point. These guys get into hilarious trouble trying to cash in their hall pass.

This is the Farrelly Brothers’ best movie since There’s Something About Mary. I know, I know, even better than Stuck on You. They’re more subdued here. It’s not about crushing pussy or penises stuck in zippers. The penises here are tame compared to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or Walk Hard. Fake chow funny because it makes sense (I’m opposed to it, ladies, but I get why it exists.) Jerking off illustrates the mature feelings of a married man. The joke is the reactions to it, not a cum shot. Okay, there are two poop scenes but the first is somewhere I’ve never seen it before, and the second is earned with character.

It’s not golden era Farrellys like Kingpin but it’s good. Fischer and Applegate have thankless parts. They’re really the cutaways to have the serious relationship talk. They give some counterpoint to what’s going on with the guys, but it’s not funny or perceptive.

There are two scenes where characters’ embarrassing conversations are caught by surveillance. That’s redundant and not that funny either time.

Hall Pass is the first real comedy of the year. It’s worth staying for the credits for another scene with Gary and Hog-Head. There’s a blooper near the end of the credits that’s not great but it pays off the jerking off joke. And there’s a final blooper and dedication which you should also stay for, because come on, you’ve already gotten to music credits. Honestly, after The Dilemma The Eagle Unknown Just Go With It, Never Say Never and all the January movies I didn’t see, it’s relief.

Warner Bros. has dropped the trailer for Hall Pass. Directed by The Farrell Brothers, it follows two guys (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) whose wives give them one week off marriage to do whatever they want. Simple enough concept, so it’s clearly all in the execution, and I think we might have winner here. The awesome supporting cast is as follows: Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate, J.B. Smoove, Stephen Merchant, Richard Jenkins, Alyssa Milano, and Vanessa Angel. If the Farrelly’s can’t make this movie work, God help them.

Hall Pass checks into theaters February 25, 2011.

‘Going the Distance’ Trailer Stays In Its Comfort Zone http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/going-the-distance-trailer-stays-in-its-comfort-zone/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/going-the-distance-trailer-stays-in-its-comfort-zone/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 The trailer for new rom-com Going the Distance looks at the trials and tribulations of a long distance relationship as Justin Long and Drew Barrymore try to make it work from spaced-out area codes. It takes a concept with potential and weaves in thin threads of triteness between scenes with "Always Sunny's" Charlie Day.  The original script was on the Black List awhile back, but of course Hollywood execs replaced the dark tones and realistic characters with botched spray tan and inappropriate kitchen table sex set pieces. Justin Long delivers, as he usually seems to do, but I find myself wondering why his character puts so much effort into a long distance relationship with Drew Barrymore when Charlie Day is (inexplicably) his father. Live with dad forever, dude. No girl's going to keep you as entertained as he will, even if she does let you feel her up over her shirt. Check out the trailer after the jump. Going the Distance phones it in to theaters August 27, 2010.
