To commemorate the release of the season 6 DVD set that very few people will actually buy, NBC has given us a lovely gift: yet another Parks and Recreation gag reel. As the show gets older, the stars get bigger, and everyone seems to stop caring as much, which makes for some VERY funny outtakes.

Also, the humor runs a little profane, so if you’re listening at work, might wanna toss those headphones on.

A sampling from Chris Pratt‘s nonsensical improv: “My mom carried me to term for 17 months. I was born with a full head of hair…a full head of teeth.”

Just watch this. You won’t regret it.

Chris Pratt has always seems like a pretty cool guy, especially as the schlubby Andy on Parks and Recreation. But with a ripped new body, and a fast track to Hollywood’s A-list, we were concerned that he would go all up his own butt and lose the charm.

Nope. Charm and good nature intact. If you want proof just check out this clip of him attempting the Ice Bucket Challenge, pounding an airplane bottle of vodka, then getting doused with water at least six times while trying to speak. It’s awesome, and since this ALS Fundraising trend has given us so much material, the least we can do is link to the official ALS donation page and suggest you chip in a few bucks yourself. Here ya go.

Oh, and here’s Pratt before we forget:

Chris Pratt may be in just okay shape, but his rap game is tight. Earlier this week, a video surfaced of Pratt challenged to rap the Eminem verse from “Forgot About Dre.” Without missing a beat, he performed it nearly flawlessly. That’s further backed by this remix of his verse laid over the beat.  His playlist continues to grow.

If you haven’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, go check it out. If you have seen the film, or are on the fence, then this video might serve as a nice extra/motivation to get back into the theater again. It’s Chris Pratt giving a guided tour of his character’s spaceship, The Milano. Why “The Milano?”

Because he had a big crush on Alyssa Milano when he was a kid.

If you don’t find that answer satisfactory, you are a cold-hearted, Pratt-hating monster.

The tour is hindered by the fact that there’s SO much green-screen stuff going on in this film it’s a little hard to know what’s what. But we’ll take our Pratt when we can get him.

Guardians of the Galaxy marketed itself as a different type of superhero film. It was character driven, as audiences weren’t familiar enough with the source material to fall back on the familiar faces and plots. It was goofy and funny, but not at the expense of action. The film was initially far riskier than Iron Man, The Avengers, or any of the old guard.

But rather than alienating the die-hard fans, Guardians appealed to…well, everyone. It pulled in $94 million its opening weekend, which is just $1 shy of Captain America‘s take earlier this year. It also will likely lend itself better to repeat viewings, so it could prove a little more durable in later weeks.

Good thing they’ve already announced the sequel. America apparently can’t get enough of little raccoons and anthropomorphic trees.

I wish I could just leave this part blank, and just couple the headline with this clip from Late Night with Seth Meyers, but there are a lot of reasons why I can’t do that, so let’s talk about it for a second. If you haven’t seen the Parks and Rec outtakes, then you don’t know what a card Chris Pratt is on set. He’s like a cross between his character, Andy, and a slightly smarter version of Andy. Goofy and funny.

All signs point to Guardians of the Galaxy, despite being based on lesser-known source material from Marvel, making an absolute killing at the box office this weekend. And the next weekend. And probably on DVD. And PPV. And merchandising.

While the tools used predict such information are a little “inside baseball” and foreign (focus groups, ouija boards, surveys) we got our first real piece of evidence today when it was revealed that last night the film took in $11.2 million, which is more than Captain America, the year’s high-water mark, did in its first night.

The predictors are expecting $40-$50 million tonight, with the weekend totaling $80-$90+ million.

In any event, the film is all but guaranteed to have the biggest August opening ever for a film, eclipsing The Bourne Ultimatum’s $69 million.

Yay, Hollywood revenues. It’s nice to know that these studio execs will finally see some money from their hard work.

By Jared Jones

It’s rather fitting that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy would be the first film I’d review for Screen Junkies, as it’s a movie that seems damn near impossible to critique. Sure, Guardians adheres to many of the conventions we’ve come to expect from a comic book movie (dead parents, cryptically-introduced characters who speak entirely in exposition, etc.), and betrays most of its plot conventions before they are even established, but its absolute refusal to take itself seriously doesn’t exactly open the door for criticism.

Of course, then you see a wisecracking racoon unleash a barrage of machine gun fire while riding on the back of a talking treebeast, and you nearly pass out from the deluge of blood that rushes from your head to your nerd boner.

Guardians of the Galaxy can best be described as a two-hour montage set to a 1970′s Jock Jams mixtape, complete with some of the most intense and plain beautiful CGI your puny eyes may ever gaze upon. It’s the kind of movie Pete Hammond would describe as an “uproarious, fun-filled thrill ride!” while sucking on the taint of whatever PR firm had hired him to write it. For once, his blatant hyperbole would be accurate.

The story is a rather familiar one in terms of comic book adaptations: Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is abducted by a gang of intergalactic mercenaries (led by the always delightful Michael Rooker) after watching his mother succumb to cancer, and twenty some-odd years later, he is roaming the galaxy as a common, if wickedly inventive thief. That is, until he stumbles upon the Infinity Stone capable of destroying entire civilizations (DUN-DUN-DUN!) and is forced to band together with a crew of misfits and miscreants in order to save the galaxy. Yadda yadda yadda hijinks ensue.

But yes, back to the CGI. As someone who has always preferred his world-building to take place in our actual world, even I must admit that Guardians was able to create the kind of exceptionally detailed, fully realized CGI-scapes that make paying the extra $10 for 3D glasses worth it. Not that I have to, being a fancy film critic that I am now and all (*spins bow tie*). The post-opening credits scene, which sees Quill a.k.a “Star Lord” shimmy his way across a barren planet to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters/Tesseract/whatever, was the highlight for me in that regard. The whole sequence plays out like a steampunk take on the 1912 Utah opening from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and if you can’t get into that, the door is right over there.

That said, the inevitable success of Guardians will ultimately (and rightfully) be attributed to its cast and the witty repartee they develop. Marvel movies — and really, any comic book adaptation — only shine when they opt for the absurdist route, in my opinion, and director James Gunn‘s script never once pauses to talk about “destiny” or “fate” or whatever hackneyed cliches often punctuate comic book faire. A gravel-voiced Christian Bale speaking in platitudes about the moral weight that comes with being a cape-wearing crime fighter? I fart in your general direction, sir. A gravel-voiced Dave Bautista discussing his inability to understand metaphor? I’ll take two, please.

*Every* character in Guardians is the comic relief, Zoe Saldana‘s somewhat flat Gamora excluded, and that’s what makes the movie such a fun, effortless experience to watch. That, and the breakneck pace at which the film itself moves, because good God, does this flick hustle information past you like an irritated flight attendant on a frat bro-filled plane to Spring Break, Cancun. But on top of it all, Guardians of the Galaxy is just funny, plain and simple. Who would’ve guessed that a WWE star not named The Rock has legitimate comedic timing, or that Vin Diesel repeating the same line of dialogue over and over and over again would never not be hilarious? Spoiler alert: Bautista kills it, and I want a baby Groot-sized potted plant on my desk ASAP.

If I could lob one legitimate criticism at Guardians, it would be that of its villains. As I’ve noticed in more and more blockbuster action movies to come out in recent years, Guardians in the Galaxy would like you to believe that its bad guys — mainly, the Vader-esque Ronan — are all-powerful, menacing, genocidal killers, yet it never really commits to that narrative or establishes what exactly is motivating them (other than the classic standby of “world destruction”). Ronan and his cronies are merely blips on the radar who pop up when needed to cause a little mayhem, but they never really give the impression that they possess the destructive power that warrants the fear they instill.

Guardians’ PG-13 rating is most likely to blame for the movie’s lack of any real stakes or sense of impending doom, and I guess that’s forgivable. But just once, I’d like to see a quote unquote “popcorn flick” have the balls to actually commit to decisions it makes. If you’re going to kill off a character, kill off a character. If you’re going to have one character betray another, maybe establish a relationship between the two that last more than 30 seconds to give said betrayal some actual gravitas.

It’s a minor complaint in an otherwise glowing review, but something Marvel should maybe consider when developing Guardians of the Galaxy 2-8. Oh, did you not know that this movie is going to a box office juggernaut greenlit for a sequel by night’s end? Or that Chris Pratt is probably the next king of the box office? Because yeah, that’s all about to happen.

Grade: B+

In order to keep feeding the beast of high-profile release dates that Marvel/Disney has staked out for the next four years or so, there’s no time for annual evaluations and strategic meetings. There’s your gut, and there’s following what it has to say. And Marvel’s gut is saying that Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be huge, that James Gunn did a great job writing and directing, and that he should be hired for the second one with no more discussion.

And so it shall be.

Gunn has been picked up to write and direct the next installment of the film (release date July 28, 2017). I don’t entirely understand the virtue in making this announcement now, before the first one premieres. I mean, it’s not like he won’t have three years to film and edit the sequel. My guess is this is something of a marketing move, with Marvel demonstrating just how confident they are that this movie is going to kick ass.

It’s like booking a Super Bowl trip while your team is in the Wild Card hunt. Only the Wild Card hunt is a raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper. Or the Super Bowl is voiced by Bradley Cooper. Shit. I think I screwed up this analogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy is back with an extended trailer to further convince you to see the film. It also does a great job of convincing me to download “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways.

Marvel screened 17 minutes of footage from the film in IMAX and if the early reactions can be trusted, this film is going to be massive. According to Latino Review, the 3D is used to great effect for the sequences set in space. Think Gravity with much more to look at than Sandra Bullock’s face pasted on an astronaut’s body.

Performance-wise, Chris Pratt‘s muscles are about to become straight up celebrities and parents are going to have to be ever vigilant if they want to stop their children from approaching raccoons. Sounds like Marvel’s streak will continue. It’s their galaxy. We just live in it.

Things don’t get too spoilery beyond basic plot premise as most of the interview with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard has to do with how Jurassic Park was an awesome movie and that Pratt is in just okay shape now. Here he is.

He says he got the body by giving up beer for six months, but I secretly think he may have worked out a little, too.

Here at Screen Junkies, we’ve made it our mission to bring you the latest updates from the world of movies and shirtless actors. Today we murder both of those birds.

Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt  took some time over the weekend to Instagram a picture of himself not being a fat fatty in order to star in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He looks okay. I guess. I mean, if you’re into that. It’s not like I want to have his babies or anything. But he does look like he’d be a lot of fun to wrestle. What?

Pratt also wrote, “Six months no beer. Kinda douchey to post this but my brother made me.”

That’s a pretty good argument for cutting beer out entirely. However, a more convincing argument comes from the other camp. Namely that beer is awesome. (THR)

Chris Pratt To Lose All That Weight Again For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Lead http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/chris-pratt-to-lose-all-that-weight-again-for-guardians-of-the-galaxy-lead/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/chris-pratt-to-lose-all-that-weight-again-for-guardians-of-the-galaxy-lead/#comments Wed, 06 Feb 2013 13:36:12 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=253370 If it doesn't conflict with his responsibilities in Pawnee.

Eddie Redmayne, Jim Sturgess, Joel Edgerton, Lee Pace, Jack Huston, James Marsden, Garrett Hedlund, Sullivan Stapleton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zachary Levi, Wes Bentley, Chris Lowell, and Cam Gigandet have all reportedly had their hopes of starring opposite a cartoon raccoon dashed. That honor has been reserved for Chris Pratt.

The Parks and Recreation and Zero Dark Thirty star is nearing a deal to play the lead role of Peter Quill in Marvel’s Phase Two film, Guardians of the Galaxy. According to the plot description, Quill, aka Star-Lord, is a pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants. I’ll just assume that refers to an easier way to open bacon packaging. (THR)

If you like these ladies, you need to cast them in major upcoming motion pictures. No flowers or stuffed bears accepted. Luckily for these actresses, some casting directors did just that.

Mireille Enos (AMC’s “The Killing“) has snagged a role in Paramount‘s World War Z, based on the Max Brooks bestseller about zombies. This is the first movie Hollywood has made about zombies in a long time. She’ll play wife Karin Lane to star Brad Pitt. Though Enos has starred in TV shows like “Big Love,” this is the first time her face will be stretched to movie theater proportions in a major role. (Deadline)

Meanwhile, the Judd Apatow produced comedy Five Year Engagement is importing a new lady from NBC Thursdays to join the cast. Mindy Kaling “The Office“) will join Alison Brie (“Community”), as well as Jason Segal, Emily Blunt, Rhys Ifans and Chris PrattParks and Recreation“). With all that NBC talent on board, they’d better hope a film opening opposite them doesn’t feature stars from CBS, or they will be crushed at the box office. (Variety)

Funny, Schlubby Comedian Joins Apatow Movie In Casting Shocker http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/funny-schlubby-comedian-joins-apatow-movie-in-casting-shocker/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/funny-schlubby-comedian-joins-apatow-movie-in-casting-shocker/#comments Fri, 04 Mar 2011 01:56:34 +0000 Geoffrey Golden http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=31750 Chris Pratt ("Parks and Recreations") is another laid back, bearded comedian who can pinch hit for Seth Rogen. Rhys Ifans is also in talks to play a role.

If you’ve been watching Parks and Recreation, you’re seeing a lot on funny people say funny stuff to each other for a solid half hour. A lot of attention’s been paid to Aziz Ansari and the show’s star Amy Poehler, but Chris Pratt‘s been working hard at being the show’s resident loser. Well, one of the show’s many losers, but Andy Dwyer is certainly towards the top of the funniest loser list on that show.

It’s no surprise to me that Pratt’s been cast in producer Judd Apatow‘s latest film, Five-Year Engagement. Directed by Nick Stoller, Five-Year is about the roller-coaster relationship between characters played by Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. Sounds very Apatowish to me. It’s reassuring to know that there’s another schlubby, bearded comedian who can pinch hit for Seth Rogen. Allison Brie (“Community”) was also recently cast, so we now know what Apatow watches on Thursday nights. All the sitcoms on CBS, America’s Most Watched Network.

Meanwhile, Rhys Ifans (Greenberg) is in talks to play a role. Hopefully it’ll be the same role he’s playing in The Amazing Spider-Man: The Lizard. It’d be nice if Apatow changed things up a bit, and if The Lizard was in just one of his movies. Just one. I’m sure The Lizard would like to get high and discuss his feelings with other dudes too. (The Playlist)

The spiritual sequel to “That 70′s Show,” Take Me Home Tonight, is ready to rock with a new red-band trailer that offers a look at 1980′s style debauchery. Car theft, drugs, sex, and trampolining without a license are all put on display this time around. This isn’t that much more extreme than the previous trailer but it’s definitely more willing to have a good time. You can tell because it’s wearing a necktie as if it were a bandana.
