Formerly Trapped Chilean Miners Go Hollywood

Remember those Chilean miners who were trapped for 69 days underground? No? Well, Hollywood would like to remind you. The story has been sold to producer Mike Medavoy, and a script by Jose Riviera (The Motorcycle Diaries) has been commissioned. Here’s Medavoy, who delivered a speech atop a pile of money which may or may not contain 33 trapped Chilean miners:

“Like millions of people around the world, I was completely engrossed watching the rescue at Copiapó. At its heart, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the courage and perseverance of the Chilean people. I can’t think of a better story than this one to bring to the screen.”

This’ll probably be a World Trade Center-meets-Buried production. Or they could go in a different direction and have it end with a splashy musical number, with perhaps the real-life Chilean miners taking part in the fun. Hooray for Hollywood! (Deadline)

For a bunch of rural Chilean miners, these guys are pretty savvy when it comes to entertainment law. All 33 of the miners that made news in October after being trapped underground for 69 days are close to packaging their story rights for sale to a single firm, says The Hollywood Reporter. You go, Chilean miners!

There’s a chance that this had been planned back in their time in the mine (Did one of them intern at CAA or something?), as they have been notoriously tight-lipped about what went down over those 69 days. Well, their secrecy is about to get these guys paid. Though the auction process may take some time, it’s probable that whoever ends up with the rights to this compelling story will probably want to turn things around sooner rather than later, as the public’s attention span for these sorts of things is akin to a fruit fly.

The plan, as reps for the miners have disclosed, is to get a book deal locked up, with the anticipation that the book will be optioned for a feature film shortly thereafter. So no matter how quickly a studio wants this story, they may be at the back of the line, despite how hot true disaster movies are right now.

The miners have been making public appearances, but have stuck to their vow of silence as to what took place, and none are allowed to pursue any individual deals. Wow. The tactic taken on by these miners, no matter how shrewd, are a powerful showing of solidarity. Stand strong, our Chilean friends. Stand strong.

Brad Pitt Looking To Break New Ground With Chilean Miners

Looks like being trapped underground for two months is finally starting to pay off. Brad Pitt‘s Plan B Entertainment is negotiating to buy the film rights for the story of the Chilean miners. It’s not hard to believe that a Hollywood big shot would want to bring such a dramatic true life event to the big screen, but The Wrap also reports that the miners are negotiating roles for themselves. They’ve been flooded with proposals, but “want to create a holding company to equally distribute proceeds from their story before signing the deal with Plan B.”

This will truly be a harrowing tale about 33 actors who turned to a life of mining for the dream of making it in Tinsel Town was just that; a dream. Now after a cataclysmic event, they finally have the opportunity to show the world that they can make it in Hollywood. Next year the Oscar Best Actor category is going to need to expand its accepted nominees by 28. It’s Chile’s time to reign.
