These actors must LOVE their agents.

Wherever you have an ensemble cast, you most likely have a string of bizarre and/or embarrassing early roles played by the actors. Or, in the case of Sons of Anarchy, you have early credits that are polar opposites of the characters they play now. Have a look at the tough as nails ladies and gentlemen of SAMCRO before they grew out their hair and got bugs in their teeth.

Charlie Hunnam

Before joining Sam Crow, Charlie Hunnam was a member of a very different gang when he played Nathan Maloney on the hit drama Queer as Folk.

Ron Perlman

With hundreds of credits to his name, Ron Perlman has appeared in all manner of film, television, and theater roles. But only one of these roles required him to dress like a lion. Before he was Clay, he was a big hit on television as Beauty and the Beast‘s Vincent, the love interest to Linda Hamilton. And these were back in the days when Hamilton was really hot, so you know Garfield must have had a really charming personality.

Katey Sagal

Of course, everyone remembers Katey Sagal as the undomesticated housewife Peggy Bundy on Married With Children, but it’s still almost hard to believe. Sagal’s portrays the characters as polar opposites, with one likely to burn the roast and the other to burn a cigarette out on your face.

Son’s of Anarchy creator, and rabid Screen Junkies hater, Kurt Sutter posted a new promo for the biker drama on his blog this morning. It doesn’t offer up much, but it looks like the Teller family is happy to have baby Abel back, and Jax cut off his golden locks. Could the show be turning over a new leaf? Are we to expect no more rape, intravenous drug-taking, or skull stomping? Oh no wait, Clay’s brandishing a shot gun. Good to see the Sons haven’t gotten soft. I never clocked them as Red Hot Chili Pepper fans though.

Who am I kidding? EVERYONE loves RHCP.

Apparently, ridding the Earth of alien invaders is "Charlie work."

Between you and me, I think Guillermo del Toro is secretly in love with FX shows. Or guys name Charlie. Or both. After having signed up”Sons of Anarchy“‘s Charlie Hunnam, the producers of Pacific Rim are now looking to pick up Charlie Day, who plays fan-favorite Charlie Kelly on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” also on FX.

Pacific Rim tells the story of an alien invasion of earth, which could explain why uber-macho Charlie Hunnam is involved but doesn’t exactly explain the involvement of Charlie Day. The armed forces probably need a guy whose voice gets really high when he gets excited.

Legendary Pictures, the producing studio, is said to be targeting up-and-coming talent with this project, and while Day is certainly something of a cult hero, he is pretty far from established, especially in films. His first co-starring role in a feature will be Horrible Bosses, which drops July 8.
Guillermo del Toro is pitting the young actor against some giant "malevolent" bugs. Benevolent bugs would be funnier.

Charlie Hunnam, best known as biker Jax Teller in Kurt Sutter‘s”Sons of Anarchy,” and not so well known for his turn the in short-lived Apatow series “Undeclared,” is in negotiations to star in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim hasn’t made as much noise as other big projects, living in the shadow of The Hobbit and At the Mountains of Madness. Well, no longer. Pacific Rim sounds like an event film if ever there was one. The movie contemplates a methodical destruction of Earth by “malevolent creatures” (but not necessarily aliens) and mankind’s united stand against them.

I don’t want to presume anything, but I have a hunch that Hunnam will be playing a human and not a giant malevolent creature, but del Toro has a pretty warped mind, so who knows?

Hunnam has had little trouble making the leap to features with Blackbird and The Ledge hitting theaters in the near future. And now it sounds like we’ll get to see him save the Earth. Or destroy it. That del Toro is one tough nut to crack. (Deadline)

Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard star in a movie that was the backdrop for a Screen Junkies controversy. (Whoa.)

Awhile back, Screen Junkies interviewed The Ledge star Charlie Hunnam at Sundance. It ended up not being pretty, but we’re ready to let bigones be bigones, and won’t let the bad memories associated with the interview color our presentation of the trailer. I promise to be completely fair and unbiased.

The Ledge, a poopy movie for dumb-dumbs, was written and directed by Matthew Chapman. The movie, about a bunch of jerks who get caught in a stupid-looking love triangle, stars Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard. From the stinky trailer, I gather that Hunnam has to jump off the ledge, or his lover Tyler will be killed by her religious zealot husband Wilson. Oh, and when I said the trailer was stinky, I meant it smells like a fart.

IFC Films will push the movie off a ledge for a limited theatrical release June 29th. Also: two thumbs down.

When I interviewed Charlie Hunnam for his film The Ledge at Sundance I had no idea it would cause such a stir. Here I've post the audio file in its entirety.

When I interviewed Charlie Hunnam for his film The Ledge at Sundance I had no idea it would cause such a stir. I of course asked about his TV series “Sons of Anarchy” also. Hunnam expressed a difference of opinion on where the show had gone in the third season. “SOA” fans didn’t even believe he’d say anything contrary, so we posted the audio file of the exchange.

Now it seems “SOA” creator Kurt Sutter feels I baited his actor into slamming the show.

This is surprising because the Q&A was a literal transcription of the exchange. The question posed to Hunnam was “Where does Jax need to go in season four?”

For complete transparency, here is the entire 9 minute interview. It is Hunnam and The Ledge director Matthew Chapman together discussing the film, with my “SOA” questions at the end. The audio confirms I may fumble when asking some questions, but I have not altered any of the quotations.

I would be happy to speak with Mr. Sutter directly. I take issues of ethics seriously and would address any concerns he has.

I’m most surprised that as of now, nobody has contacted me directly about this issue.

Complete audio of our interview HERE.

UPDATE: For all of you who don’t believe that Hunnam said what he said about”Sons of Anarchy” in the interview below, I’ve posted a sound file at the very bottom of the page. And yes, it’s really Hunnam, who in real life is British, talking. It’s not one of my editors putting on his best accent.

Another major Sundance distribution deal was for The Ledge, a thriller starring “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard. Hunnam plays Gavin, a man prepared to jump from a ledge, recounting to a detective (Howard) the events that led him up there. It turns out his neighbor Joe (Wilson) didn’t approve of Gavin’s tolerance of gays and affections for his wife Shana (Tyler).

Before IFC Films made their deal for The Ledge, I got to talk with Hunnam at the Sundance Film Festival. Sundance interviews tend to be brief, as talent races from place to place just like I cram four movies into a day. We still had time to discuss the deep themes of the film and get a scoop on “Sons.”

Q: You kept Jax’s hair for The Ledge?

CH: Yes, unfortunately that was one of the really big compromises that we had to make. I wasn’t able to cut my hair because of the continuation of story in “Sons of Anarchy” from season 2 to season 3 which is when we shot this. I had to keep the hair and I also had to keep a little bit of facial hair which we discussed at great length. It was a huge compromise and we were both a little disappointed that that was the case but it was one of those unavoidable things. There are certain realities to being on a TV show and most of them are positive. Some of them are a little negative.

Q: It wasn’t criticism, I just recognized the look.

CH: Yeah, you know, we were able to rationalize it in that he’s a little anti-establishment, Gavin, so maybe it was a reaction against the kind of vanilla cookie-cutter aesthetic that was desired from the hotel [where Gavin worked.] Him keeping a bit of the facial hair and the long hair was a little f*ck you to the man.

Q: How does it feel that there are at least two films with a homophobic villain?

CH: A homophobic villain?

Q: Red State also has a fundamentalist preacher killing gay people.

CH: I never thought Patrick’s character to be homophobic. I took him to be misguided and fundamental in his believes. Obviously, some of those were to do with homosexuality but he was much more fundamentalist Christian than an active bigot in his own right. I never really took that away from him which is why I was so shocked when you asked the question. I guess there are a couple scenes that deal with his views towards homosexuality but I never thought that was a tenet, pillar of his personality or a theme of the film. I may be wrong.

Q: Should we confront people like Joe?

CH: I think particularly for instance in politics, I don’t think faith should play a part in politics, in modern politics the way it does. I think there are a lot of outdated ideas that go with man’s interpretation of God’s will, of those amongst the believers that can be very, very dangerous in today’s society. I think that religion absolutely has its place and I very much live and let live. I do have a confused but real belief in some kind of energy, be it the universe or God or whatever. I don’t at all subscribe to any scripture or organized religion because to me, all religion, if there is a God, everybody is worshiping the same God and it’s just man’s different interpretation of God. So for that to cause animosity or wars or anything like that is really just kind of a terrible, terrible catastrophe, a concept that I think is very outdated, very, very dangerous.

Q: But even when it’s not a situation as tense as The Ledge, it seems like guys like Joe are dangerous. Is there a less dangerous way to confront them?

CH: Yeah, I mean any kind of fanatic is probably very, very dangerous to pick holes in somebody’s fanaticism. That’s why fanaticism is dangerous.

Q: Where does Jax need to go in Season Four?

CH: I think that he needs to assert himself and needs to control his psychotic mother who has no place trying to run a motorcycle club. If I was in charge of the writing, I would really, really pull back on that because that’s just a device that doesn’t ever ring true to me. So it’s very frustrating to me sometimes to be put in a position as an actor to have to play out scenes where I don’t believe the dynamic and I don’t believe that Jax would ever be taking orders from his mother, you know. So I hope that that is something that can be remedied a little bit.

Q: Will there be a bigger jump in time between seasons three and four?

CH: Yeah, because I don’t think that the show can sustain us being in prison and obviously we got to prison and it’s been well established that we’re going for two years. So probably be out in 18 months and so I don’t think we can sustain 18 months worth of prison storylines. So I think they’ll probably pick us up as we get released from prison would be my guess.

The Ledge is a big misdirect. You think it’s going to be a standoff movie where a cop has to talk a jumper down. That’s really just the hook.

The Ledge is a big misdirect. You think it’s going to be a standoff movie where a cop has to talk a jumper down. That’s really just the hook. It’s really a theological debate between an atheist and a homophobic zealot. I guess you can’t really lead with that.

Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) steps out onto the ledge of a roof. Hollis (Terrence Howard) is called to talk him down. Hollis just found out that he can’t donate sperm because he’s infertile. He has kids. So he’s got that going on. Gavin tells the story of what led him to the ledge.

Shana (Liv Tyler), Gavin’s new hotel employee also happens to be his neighbor. Gavin and his gay roommate Chris (Chris Gorham) invite the neighbors for dinner, and Shana’s husband Joe (Patrick Wilson) thinks they’re both gay and prays for God to help them correct their abominable choice. Now Gavin is not gay, but he still knows that’s wrong.

It’s interesting that the Sundance audience laughed at Joe’s comments. In a progressive audience, that sounds like humor because obviously we know his suggestions of homosexuality correcting programs are evil. I think most audiences will find it horrific. At least I hope they do.

Gavin engages in theological debates with Joe while trying to save Shana from such an oppressive man. I think it’s bold to make a movie so heavily centered on a hot button issue. I just don’t think it really explores it fully.

Joe takes the typical unwavering approach that the only salvation is being born again. Gavin’s all about evidence. I don’t think it’s either God exists or he doesn’t. Beliefs can enrich people’s lives and make them want to love. Joe’s beliefs make him hate. Where does that come from?

Narratively, I have a problem with the whole movie being a flashback. I know if you didn’t start on the ledge, it wouldn’t get juicy for about a half hour, but that’s the screenwriter’s problem to solve (same guy, writer/director Matthew Chapman.) This overdone crutch of the teaser opening informs way too much of the plot. Now nothing could happen that would prohibit Gavin from ending up on the ledge. It doesn’t take too much deduction to figure out which of the five characters is behind the plot and what Gavin’s choice will have to be.

It’s interesting that there are at least two films at Sundance with homophobic villains. That’s what Red State is about too, in a slasher movie format. I guess society has gotten to the point where artists want to tackle this head on. Everyone who protested Basic Instinct and Silence of the Lambs in the early ‘90s, here’s a movie where a raging heterosexual is the villain.

"Up top! Nobody? No? Aw krikey."

Looks like Eric Bana won’t have a chance to play with his Christmas toys. He’s just signed on to a new crime thriller and has his eye on the presidency for another role.

Bana has signed on to Kin, opposite Olivia Wilde and Charlie Hunnam. In the film he and Wilde play siblings on the lam who encounter an ex-boxer played by Hunnam. Writer Zach Dean has said he came up with the idea while trapped on an airplane with faulty landing gear. I do my best thinking while crapping too.

In addition to Kin, Bana is practicing the proper pronunciation of Timur Bekmambetov‘s name before the two meet to discuss Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It’s not a done deal by any stretch but if Bana can rock the stove-pipe hat, the role just might be his. Unless Liam Neeson steps up to the plate. We kinda owe him a Lincoln role. (via Variety and The Wrap)

A new trailer for season three of "Sons Of Anarchy" looks as bad ass as one would expect. Jax seems a bit down after the events of last year, but that's nothing gunfights, fistfights, and burying a guy in the sand up to his neck and then running his face over can't fix. It's the simple things in life that bring us the most joy. Let the healing begin.
